Keanu 52 is fiiiiiiiiiiiine
― Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 3 March 2017 01:07 (seven years ago) link
Keanu 52 is the kind of guy who quotes Shakespeare sonnets unprompted which is somehow both douchey and endearing. Or maybe it's just endearing cause it's Keanu.

"Chill gunfight" maybe the rare joke that is too stoopid even for a film about assassin club, felt like true lies or something
I liked this film except for the boring bits. I wonder if each film will keep doubling down on "opening fire with an automatic weapon in a club is good"
― wins, Friday, 3 March 2017 09:46 (seven years ago) link
That's p tiresome stuff in a thread about a Hollywood action movie maybe.

idk feels about on a level with "this film has stairs in it" but ok
― wins, Friday, 3 March 2017 10:33 (seven years ago) link
Not gonna lie there's a certain lethargy to my protests so yknow maybe keanu just exudes this heavy vibe that reaches even unto threads on msg boards idk

This movie's legacy is only going to be burnished by the existence of Assassin's Creed.

I seen both films recently. I think they're okay but I liked that they concentrated so much on the action because it seems to me most big action films get bogged down in a load of character drama and plot that they can barely muster or pretend they care. Maybe it's because Keanu is one of the few stars outside East Asia that can carry that much action.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 3 March 2017 16:10 (seven years ago) link
Hyperbolic headline notwithstanding, this writeup p much nails what I dig about the John Wick movies in particular

― Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 3 March 2017 16:51 (seven years ago) link
and it dovetails with Robert Adam Gimour's post somewhat re Keanu & Asian action
― Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 3 March 2017 16:52 (seven years ago) link
that's a good article. i think the John Wick flicks also resemble in some ways the Chow-Yun Fat movie Full Contact, with their revenge arcs, though latter movie doesn't have nearly as much humor. The world created for the movies and the casual way in which its depicted and the offhand manner in which its explained (which is to say not at all) is also pretty key. and the insistence on a color palette revolving around black and blue and red and purple vs teal and orange is vv nice.

fashion sidebar: there were some awesome tie arrangements going on itt, like Santino's tie tack style like ocean waves or something it was so fkn cool & John Wick's black tie on black shirt with the silver collar pin, so into it

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
xxposts to Jim in Vancouver -- I'm not saying you should watch it if you're not feeling it. but, the best thing about the movie is that the indignity of that sweet dog's death is 100% channelled through the action of the entire movie, it's not just a throwaway gimmick. imo. so if you've ever wanted someone who did that to a dog to get a comeuppance on the biblical level, this movie sees that through to its excellent conclusion. if you want.
color scheme still a+, omar otm

whoever's idea it was for a series of movies featuring Keanu being a badass while wearing a suit deserves some kind of nobel prize because it is truly a service to humanity

I'll take the pulpy worldbuilding and almost supernatural elements of JW2 over the comparatively glum and straightforward original any day
― resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 18 January 2019 16:44 (five years ago) link
understandable why they went with the world/mythology building in order to build a franchise but darragh is otm. second one's good, first is better as a standalone movie

plus his car is so damn cool, & I don't give a shit about cars! these movies pwn me for 2 hours
― calumy (rip van wanko), Friday, 18 January 2019 16:55 (five years ago) link
first movie has a *way* better bad guy and i felt like reeves needed that to push against - it felt like he was "beating insurmountable odds" whereas in the second movie he's just mass slaughtering a bunch of redshirt dopes
they're both super fun, though! no question
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:27 (five years ago) link
I found the main bad guys in both movies total bores tbh
― resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 18 January 2019 17:27 (five years ago) link
aw, i thought blomqvist was great and had way more joie de vivre
in the second movie, i love the way common acts badly
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:31 (five years ago) link
the second one is fun but its v much a "middle movie" and suffers from the usual conplaints of same.

ian mcshane is totally gonna die in the next one right
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:35 (five years ago) link
they're gonna make these till Keanu physically can't anymore AFAICT xp
― resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 18 January 2019 17:36 (five years ago) link
the main bad guys are both having a lot of fun with the roles i thought though Nyqvist was better in that regard. JW2 is awesome, JW1 is slightly moreso.
― omar little, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:44 (five years ago) link
in JW1 i think Ruby Rose was fantastic, everyone was really. But I think it gets slightly repetitive in a way the first one does not. but it only starts to feel that way deep into the third act, vs earlier on. It just takes the edge off the film for me. The first one has a better upward movement through the ranks to get to the final showdown, and a more righteous mission.
again this is really an argument I don't like to make since both films are considerably outstanding.
― omar little, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:47 (five years ago) link
do we know if they're even bothering with a new big bad in JW3? I'm sort of hoping they don't
― resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 18 January 2019 17:49 (five years ago) link
one of the bad guys is the dude who played "The Chairman" on Iron Chef America
