Imagine spending all day working on the dynamics of sucking.

The end of the J would suck in shake, as would two large holes on its tip, allowing you to get the mix you want. But as the shake dipped below the J holes, those openings wouldn’t start sucking in air as a straight straw with holes would. Instead, you could continue sucking because of a vital third hole, on the bottom of the straw. As long as there’s shake coming through the bottom, you close off the pressure system to the tip of the J.

the 'california prices' aspect of the list should be a clue

in n out has chopped chilis, is cheap, doesn't force obnoxious portion sizes (unless u want it), better fries

theres been a huge proliferation of local burger chains here in the last 10 years almost all of which are preferable to five guys/in-n-out, but fried chicken is still a challenge

never been to in n out but from what I understand the entire menu is a secret and every individual food item must be ordered using a complicated code that takes several years of studying to master

also that list sucks because popeyes biscuits aren't in the top 5 wth

In n Out is delicious, but it's sort of a special "once per visit to California" treat - not sure how I would feel about it as a regular burger choice. I don't know how much reality there is to it, but I've convinced myself that it's as close as you can get to what the pre-McDonalds true American Graffiti type burger joint was like, in terms of sizzling greasy patties slapped together with fried onions and all of that. 5 Guys is just kind of gross in my experience, though the decor is surely contributing to that a bit.

I've had both in n out and five guys once and now haven't eaten meat in years but iirc in n out was way, way, way better than five guys

In-N-Out is basically the only fast-food franchise I will patronize - and even then it is strictly a "place to eat while on road trip across the state" thing. It's good.
