I really need to upgrade my old broken iPad 3 but I'm now confused by the different formats and variants

Yeah, that's what I meant too -- the screen is worse than the Air 2, and it's fractionally thicker. Don't know about memory specs either, wouldn't be beyond them to scrimp on that. There's always a shoe to drop with Apple these days

new iPad screen seems to be the same features as iPad Air 1, so in practice, pretty much the same as all the other retina screens.

If was just a name. A confusing one. There's now iPad Pro, iPad (not air) and iPad mini. The iPad Pro comes in two sizes though, so I suppose there are 4 really.

Yes there was no consistency, at least now it's fairly clear what each machine is for.

I like my iPad Air 2 a lot, although when I'm not actually using it I do tend to think about how I really preferred the form factor of my old iPad Mini and I think I could be happier with the iPad Pro that's the exact same size but has the better speakers and processor etc. I'm disloyal.

So basically just buy whichever but just know that you'll still die wondering

kind of wonder if the filesystem transfer process did some deduping -- if a bunch of apps used the same frameworks/versions, could have zapped the clones

I'm happy with this. The new pro is probably gonna be sooo expensive that I'll just get an updated iMac and get rid of one of my monitors, but we'll see I guess.

As a professional software developer what I want most is a worse computer.

Switched recently from an iMac to a desktop PC at home - Windows still has its problems but it's awfully nice to not need an external HD, USB hub, etc. just to be able to hook up my peripherals.

The last regular desktop Mac Pro was great - easy to access for changing/adding HDs, it wasn't unsightly (if you give a shit about that), over two versions and six years I don't think I ran into a single hardware problem. It was huge but maybe just get your industrial designers to make one half as tall (don't need the SuperDrive bay, cut it down to two HD slots). Done.

i have a 2007 macbook pro that is still running like a dream. I do want one of those 4K ipad pros though but i dont have $1K to throw at it.
