the hour-of-Mountain-Dew comparison is where I'm at too. these guys are just so deeply jaundiced about everything that it starts to drag on my soul listening to them for too long. I followed them on Twitter and then immediately unfollowed the most exhausting guy (I think Will?) and honestly I'm probably gonna cut the cord with the whole outfit before too long.

Scahill's Intercepted is much better at interviews

Gukbe, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 23:25 (nine years ago)

re: quality of interviews, they vary wildly. the Adam Curtis and Ricky Rawls eps were good.

true. i dug the one with Matthew Karp a lot. been meaning to pick up his book.

We'll, this interview was depressing.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 02:03 (nine years ago)

i wonder if the whole 'laughing at dads in family court' thing is kind of misguided and not a good look idk

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 04:28 (nine years ago)

A lot of the interviews have been good, I think the problem was probably the guest this time.

Amber and Sam Kriss have a show now. Sam sounds like he's recording from a small closet.

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Friday, 3 March 2017 21:50 (nine years ago)

huh

last few Chapos have been really solid, Angela Nagle in particular was great

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 21:56 (nine years ago)

xp- can't imagine something i wannna listen to less lol

flopson, Friday, 3 March 2017 21:57 (nine years ago)

Latest Patreon episode is great.

Zeeeeeero interest in any Sam Kriss prodcast.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:13 (nine years ago)

yeah I tried with it and the sound quality + total lack of structure or theme wore me out.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:16 (nine years ago)

amber is my least favourite of the hosts, sam kriss is my least favourite guest

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:17 (nine years ago)

yeah agree that the last one was really good. not to bring up stern again but like that show they are at their best when they are cracking each other up (i know this wears thin for other people but i find it infectious).

it's interesting to watch them evolve and learn a difficult medium as they go. they are essentially talented amateurs, so i'm ok with shows being really uneven.

ryan, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:26 (nine years ago)

I love Sam Kriss but having him on a podcast with someone trying to agree with him is a terrible dynamic, he's at his best skirting this very precise edge of "my take is bad but bad takes are actually good and important", this was totally unlistenable.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:31 (nine years ago)

saw True Stories last night and realized Virgil got his name from the town the movie is set in.

Is Street Fight Radio any good? I keep meaning to try them out but haven't gotten round to it yet.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 17 March 2017 14:09 (nine years ago)

Two stay-at-home dads/stand-ups from Columbus. Pretty jocular and open and easygoing on the air.

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Friday, 17 March 2017 21:11 (nine years ago)

I listen to Street Fight from time to time. The guys are very likeable but the show drags sometimes. I usually listen to my Chapo, Cum Town and The Dig with Daniel Denvir eps first, then it's a toss-up btw Katie Halper show, Street Fight and Delete Your Account depending on guests.

Also Doug Henwood if there's a new one is somewhere in the upper range of the hierarchy.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Saturday, 18 March 2017 01:56 (nine years ago)

FWIW one of them is not fully a stay-home dad bc he drives for Lyft.

Latest premium Chapo was p good but I hate when a show has a guest and then doesn't utilize the guest. You can't assume they'll just vibe, you have to do something to get them involved. He said like three things the whole show.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Saturday, 18 March 2017 01:58 (nine years ago)

Yeah, it was a disappointing underuse of a guest. 40 minutes of Garfield talk and Caleb took up the entire time

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Saturday, 18 March 2017 02:23 (nine years ago)

agreed but the garfield shit is funny as fuck imo

flappy bird, Sunday, 19 March 2017 01:21 (nine years ago)

latest episode rules, it's a "clip show," and not only do they acknowledge the shit sound quality, but also Will's fucked up mispronunciation of words - he pronounces "zine" phonetically instead of "zeen" and everyone piles on. thank god. Matt as Walther howling in the void is amazing, and reminds me of whenever Howard Stern puts tons of reverb on his mic and sings In the Court of the Crimson King.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 17:29 (nine years ago)

i thought it sucked tbh

also too earnest

felix is good speaking on seagal's magnum opus "on deadly ground" on the podcast have you seen this? but the podcast hosts are terribly unfunny so it's a bit of a trade off

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 19:01 (nine years ago)

same podcast has had will on talking about scorsese and matt talking about the shitty 90s film mad dog time

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 19:02 (nine years ago)

aw i liked that they got sincere at the end, it was cute

it's great that media people are still good at being in media

also i was in an uber yesterday and i was subjected to a podcast recap of some youtube political pundit drama at sxsw and i wanted to claw my face off

p sure this is a war crime

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 23 March 2017 12:29 (nine years ago)

The 'I love you guys' bit at the end went on too long. When they were bigging up Brendan I was like, 'yeah, if he was that good he would cut this segment way shorter'.

why labour 'foot problems' since 2015? (Bananaman Begins), Thursday, 23 March 2017 13:00 (nine years ago)

the clip show idea was fine in itself but the delivery was dire - whenever these guys do skits i just feel like i'm listening to half-baked college radio. they're a lot more entertaining when they're just riffing amongst themselves

physicist and christian lambert dolphin (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 23 March 2017 13:25 (nine years ago)

yeah most of their scripted stuff is Not Good, thankfully they're too lazy to do it that much

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 23 March 2017 13:28 (nine years ago)

the Joe Rogan bit was extremely undercooked, and their Vidal/Buckley impressions were just ok- i thought the Adam Curtis, post-election cheering, "zine," and Maron bits were great. earnest i love yous at the end was enough for a full year, i feel

flappy bird, Thursday, 23 March 2017 16:55 (nine years ago)

I would be happy enough if every episode was reading series-style - one ep a week of cracking on a couple of stupid columns and articles, one ep on a book. They get side-tracked enough in those that you still get them riffing and talking about current events.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:46 (nine years ago)

the Caleb readings are so fucking good

flappy bird, Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:01 (nine years ago)

i saw someone call chapo 'the penny arcade of the left' and i can't shake it now

ciderpress, Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:08 (nine years ago)

enh, there's plenty of material to clown the chapo folks with but none of them seem nearly as damaged and bitter as the penny arcade dipshits
