I thought the changes were terrific--it's gonna be way, way darker.

Fucking up the theme is like the signal move--it's like even that assurance of pep has been chopped up.

The first 15 mins did sag with exposition, but that's inevitable, introducing new people, locations, etc.

Since their doing the three mystery arcs, I think some might be thrown by a new rhythm. There isn't as much Veronica and Dad just mucking about--more fioreshadowing of some big badnesses to come.

This one ep packed ALOT into 40 air minutes: the expo, dad's friend's deal, Kendall (maybe) getting shot, Dad getting shot, Dick all bloodied up after doing fuck knows what, about which you KNOW Logan is gonna do something that will screw up him and Veronica. And we haven't even gotten to whatever awful thing happened to Weevil.

I'd say that's some well-stocked entertainment.

I thought it was gonna be simpler this year, but I'm confused. What the hell happened with Veronica's dad? Kristin Bell is looking smokin'.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 October 2006 04:14 (seventeen years ago) link

when other PI picked up keith's case in his office I thought it was quite likely he had dropped a bug and/or tracking device in

yeah not sure what happened in the end though

liam had hired other PI to find kendall/cormac obviously but it is unclear who cormac shot

he said kendall wasn't such a good judge of character: he thinks keith led liam there and then cormac had to shoot liam/he said kendall wasn't such a good judge of character: he shot kendall? suppose the 2nd doesn't really make much sense

weird though

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 5 October 2006 07:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't even remember who Liam is! Is that the person Kendall was hanging out with in the motor hotel? Why does Keith want to help Kendall anyway?

Hi RJG!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 October 2006 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

She paid him to. That's why he ditched Veronica in New York and bought her a Saturn.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 5 October 2006 18:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought Cormac was referring to himself when he said Kendall wasn't such a good judge of character. i.e. she trusted him, he shot her.

Pork Cheops (willpie), Friday, 6 October 2006 00:56 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, I thought that was pretty clear. Cormac took Keith's gun, shot Kendall - but Liam will show up and shoot Cormac/save Keith now?

milo z (mlp), Friday, 6 October 2006 01:07 (seventeen years ago) link

FIRST SEASON NETFLIXED.

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Friday, 6 October 2006 01:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I could do with less post-coital Veronica.

milo z (mlp), Friday, 6 October 2006 02:17 (seventeen years ago) link

me too

so cormac shot kendall because she could finger him for more jailtime?

and that was keith's gun he had? wonder why he let keith go out instead of just shooting them both in the house. so there would be a story I suppose

hi mary!

RJG (RJG), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd wondered that too, and thought that it was Kendall he shot, but it might make more sense if Liam found them because of the tracker/bug, Cormick shot Liam, then thought that Keith had brought Liam there. But he also wandered outside afterwards, didn't check if Keith was actually dead, and started thinking out loud, so maybe he just never got any of those "grand list of supervillain cliches" emails from his mates and so didn't bother working out when it would be easiest to kill Kendall + Keith.

Based on her grades and writing/problem-solving abilities, there is no reason to believe that Veronica wouldn't have received a full scholarship at Stanford or Cal or wherever, but I guess those kind of details don't make for very good television.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 6 October 2006 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, after one episode, we still don't know if Sherrif Lamb survived the plane crash apart from the fact that he's listed as a regular in the credits. A little weird.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 6 October 2006 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

it's worth noting that they didn't actually show cormac shooting kendall... we saw him firing the gun into a room, then shooting at keith.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 6 October 2006 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

oh man. can't wait to watch it -- i think i might be confused though. i seem to have the most terrible memory EVER!!! I will just reread this thread beforehand.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 6 October 2006 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

i really want to read about this episode

v sad

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Friday, 6 October 2006 17:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Lamb wasn't on the plane that crashed - he called those cops and told them to kick Keith off the plane, but he wasn't there himself.

Bummer.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 6 October 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Lamb was on the pre-season 3 panel with the regular cast (minus Wallace) at Comic Con, which was where I made out w/ KB backstage. So yes: Alive.

c('°c) (Leee), Friday, 6 October 2006 18:51 (seventeen years ago) link

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Friday, 6 October 2006 19:09 (seventeen years ago) link

that was the grossest post-coital scene ever.

it was not particularly good, but season openers are hard. and college just doesn't work as well as high school as allegory-for-life.

and it's true, it didn't look or feel noir-y enough. the tone was way too sunny for most of it. also, I hate Mac. am I supposed to like Mac? that comment she made about her roommate having a tip jar + being mean to her perfectly nice adoptive parents because they don't have money=she sucks.

I'm hoping this I-don't-give-a-shit-about-anything vibe Veronica's giving off is going to crumple soon, but I don't want it to be this Piz guy who makes it happen.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Saturday, 7 October 2006 13:53 (seventeen years ago) link

LIES!

The backstage part was true!

c('°c) (Leee), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Twisty good episode!

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

the twistiness was nice. and stupid Piz wasn't in it, so bonus. I'm still not loving it, but I'm giving it till midseason to get riveting again.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Much better episode. I'm back on board.

Also, redheaded sorority chick is hot.

well, didn't have to wait too long.

The Stanford Experiment story was nicely done, but it felt forced a bit.

And am i the only one who doesn't care much for Keith story so far?

The credits started too soon, and new version of the song sucks. Actually i liked till the very last bit where it kinda ruins the whole thing for you.

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Veronica's second sorority ensemble (or at least the skirt) - yowzahs.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 17:08 (seventeen years ago) link

The fake-drunk Veronica dance was spectacular! And, "a vagina monologue, perhaps?", hahaha.

Also, I love the Battlestar Galactica references.

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:38 (seventeen years ago) link

The 70s had the Hustle. The 80s, the Moonwalk. We have the faux lesbian dance.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I was a bit irritated at the Mac-and-roomie scene where Mac told her to stay. It was all so stupidly quick, raped-girl was really weepy and suppressed by her family and, well, raped, and then Mac just went "stay, I got your back", and raped girl was just like oh ok then.

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Veronica-blames-herself for that was kind of lame. The audio clearly didn't make it sound like anything was amiss, and if I walk into a room with the sexing going on, I'm not turning on the lights for an ID check or anything.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:14 (seventeen years ago) link

For the first half of the ep, I was thinking I liked it better when it was in Buffy Season 2.

Then, it got better. Although I kinda of hate guilty Veronica.

J (Jay), Thursday, 12 October 2006 00:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Veronica should've sequestered herself in her own room and posted to the internets about it.

c('°c) (Leee), Thursday, 12 October 2006 15:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Despite a few missteps, this episode was pretty good. But I'm *totally* pissed that Weevil didn't get to stay on as a jr. investigator.

J (Jay), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 00:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, but Weevil having janitor's keys obviously will be a crucial plot point.

I don't know, this story arc just seems so much more a trifle than the previous seasons. The major characters are barely involved at all. The first season's plot was so epic by comparison.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 04:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm already a little sick of the "those crazy feminists!" portrayal of the women's group on campus. They all talked like hippies from some production of Hair.

I knew a bunch of girls like that at Cal, though.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Another rape and Logan doesn't seem to have an alibi again. I know it's too early to start guessing, but half the fun is turning out to be spectacularly wrong.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Ed Begley, Jr. is the rapist! I'm sure of it!

Good episode. I know the first major mystery seems a bit downplayed, but they're fighting to get new viewers. I like the mysterys-of-the-week.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

But this MOW was pretty paltry. Oh noes, lost playbook means no scholarship for big guy about whom I don't care.

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 18:15 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, so, at first I was annoyed because there doesn't seem to be as big a mystery this season, as you've all discussed. But I think introducing some huge mystery in the first episode can cause some pacing problems. It's hard to spread something out for so long, if it's not a really HUGE DEAL -- which is why I think Season Two had so much trouble in the middle. So, yeah, it's ok. I liked Weevil in this episode.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, she's only been in college for about three days now, let her settle in before you call for her head on some Buffy-meets-Colombo-or-else-it's-fatwa-time shit.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Weevil seems like shitty life has humbled him a lot.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Shit; I was watching the Mets and I missed this ep. Now I have to remember how to make bittorrent work.

Pork Cheops (willpie), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 23:51 (seventeen years ago) link

can we trade Piz for Trish?

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 19 October 2006 01:56 (seventeen years ago) link

i am totally on board w/ this season so far. i was also hoping for a lot more "Weevil & Mars Invetigates", but I can see the benefit to having him on campus plot-wise. the portrayal of college mostly rings true for me, i have to say.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Thursday, 19 October 2006 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I hope that the dorky RA isn't the rapist, because that would be a really boring reveal. Ed Begley Jr. can't be the rapist; people would notice the dean cruising dorm parties.

This episode was alright. The use of "Hold On Hold On" made me happy, and Veronica's complete hatred of painter-stalker guy cracked me up. Her sudden realization that tracing Logan's car was a mistake was highly lame, though.

clotpoll (Clotpoll), Thursday, 19 October 2006 05:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Weevil's investigative career might not be over, Veronica doesn't work there anymore either and it doesn't stop her.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Logan has turned into Ned Nickerson.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Dorky RA won't be the rapist because he's already been fingered as a suspect.

Weevil, Junior Veronica Mars Detective was awesome and so sad to see it end (presumably) so soon.
