"app" has officially become my current most hated phrase
― private static void (electricsound), Thursday, 30 April 2009 07:24 (seventeen years ago)
BTW, I am on my 5th iPhone now. Thank you Applecare.
The first one crapped out internally and locked up irrevocably.
The second one, the mute button physically fell off.
The third was only mine for a day because they accidentally gave me an 8 gig instead of a 16.
The next day it was replaced by a 16 gig phone with a bad ear speaker.
This fifth one is just a dreamboat though.

I'd like to give a shout out to my new faveorite app - Polarize (ie turns your pix into polaroids)
― baaderonixx, Thursday, 30 April 2009 08:45 (seventeen years ago)
^ Like the sound of that. Downloading.
― a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 30 April 2009 10:49 (seventeen years ago)
Simplify Media is now on version 2.0, and cheekily they've released it as a separate app, so if you were in on the original early enough to get it for free, you still need to fork out for an upgraded (ie working) version. On the plus side, it does work perfectly now, even with huge media collections.
― JimD, Thursday, 30 April 2009 11:29 (seventeen years ago)
Funny, I just un-synced Simplify from my phone last night. I never used the thing; it didn't talk to Last.fm; fuck it, really.
― a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 30 April 2009 11:36 (seventeen years ago)
It talks to last.fm now. But I guess it's only really useful if you've got an always on/always connected machine at home to host the music for you. Which I didn't have until recently, but do have now.
― JimD, Thursday, 30 April 2009 11:45 (seventeen years ago)
Been using the TVersity app so far - but it always fails when attempting to play AVIs so might try sth else
― baaderonixx, Thursday, 30 April 2009 12:14 (seventeen years ago)
Do I really need to spend a gazillion dollars on a new Mac to be able to write my own iPhone apps?
― Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:10 (seventeen years ago)
Any intel Mac will do, even a mac mini, but yes.
(Some ppl have managed it on PPC, but it's super-shaky, doesn't work with 3.0 and codesigning is hard enough on intel as it is)
― stet, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:35 (seventeen years ago)
this appulous page is some shit http://appulo.us/appdb/?page=about thanks, pirates, from saving us from an "epidemic of people not buying apps"
Have just got iCab Mobile for the phone. Better features than safari, definitely.
― stet, Thursday, 14 May 2009 18:15 (seventeen years ago)
WTF? And, er, aren't half the apps on that page free anyway?
― a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 14 May 2009 18:29 (seventeen years ago)
Peggle rocks on this thing!
― dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Friday, 15 May 2009 02:06 (seventeen years ago)
Shush. I've already bought Peggle on PC, and on classic ipod, and on Xbox Live Arcade. I can't let myself buy it again ON IPHONE.
― JimD, Friday, 15 May 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)
I've not played it on the classic ipod but I imagine the dial is great for this.
It feels great to spin the wheel on the touch screen AND it's $5. I too bought it on XBLA but not the other platforms.

Apparently Myst is now available on the iPhone. In its entirety. And I'm off on holiday next week. Awesome.
― a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Saturday, 16 May 2009 09:49 (seventeen years ago)
Myst for the Nintendo DS got shitty reviews due to bug and it looks like the iPhone version is having the same problem.
Never looked at this thread. Got a Touch today.
― dan selzer, Monday, 18 May 2009 01:31 (seventeen years ago)
Really? Hmm: the reviews on the app store I saw seemed to suggest it was awesome/best thing ever/etc (admittedly that was a cursory glance, but still).
― a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Monday, 18 May 2009 13:12 (seventeen years ago)
It's 750MB! fuckin hell

I knew that extra 8GB would come in handy some time!

Zen Bound, anyone? It was recommended by a colleague ... you, umm, wrap bits of wood in string. It's meant to be relaxing and I can see how it might be ... took me a few not-very-relaxing moments to get the hang of the controls, mind you.
― a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 20:39 (seventeen years ago)
zen bound is lovely (and most expensive app i've bought)

i spent AAAAAges looking for something that did streaming radio properly (without relying on built in libraries of streams). Solution: fstream http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=289892007&mt=8
anyone bought the paid-for twitterfon?
― Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 20:54 (seventeen years ago)
I'm kind of astonished by how good Zen Bound's physics are. Looking forward to tooling about with it a bit more this week. I'm just installing Myst now, too :)
― a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 22:25 (seventeen years ago)
I like Tweetie better that Twitterfon. Haven't tried the new Twitterific.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 22:54 (seventeen years ago)
It's lovely. Pisses all over the desktop version now, too.
― a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 23:08 (seventeen years ago)
Zen bound is great to begin with, but after the first couple of hours the objects it starts throwing at you stop being fun and instead become fucking irritating.
― JimD, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 08:17 (seventeen years ago)
I'm really not sure about it, TBH. It's not as satisfying as I want it to be. Although oddly compelling all the same.
― a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 09:36 (seventeen years ago)
tweetie ROCKS.
i also installed lexulous on my iphone. hurrah!
― the tip of the tongue taking a trip tralalala (stevienixed), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 10:56 (seventeen years ago)
does that find all your tinniest mp3s and play them loudly when it can tell you're on the top deck of a bus?
― Lovely release! (sic), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 11:29 (seventeen years ago)
Is lexulous a scrabble clone? I already have the scrabble game, which is great, especially with the facebook connect.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 12:43 (seventeen years ago)
Worst thing about Tweetie is that it puts DMs and mentions in separate tabs, and doesn't highlight that you've got new ones.
Developer is weirdly fixed on making everyone use Twitter His Way -- took loads of complaint before he allowed you to keep track of where you'd read up to

Maybe this is not the right thread for this, but can anyone tell me the best method for traveling Europe with an iPhone 3g? I know that a different power supply is needed, and that it's been suggested that one should have it unlocked and a different simcard... ? Thanks for any practical/useful non-sarcastic tips.
― Nate Carson, Sunday, 24 May 2009 02:04 (seventeen years ago)
I guess asking for non-sarcastic tips will always leave me high and dry on this board ;)
― Nate Carson, Monday, 25 May 2009 00:27 (seventeen years ago)
I thought it was a 'global' phone so didnt need to be unlocked
― I wish I was the royal trux (sunny successor), Monday, 25 May 2009 00:30 (seventeen years ago)
also i called about using it in australia. higher call rates and the data rates were ridiculous.
― I wish I was the royal trux (sunny successor), Monday, 25 May 2009 00:31 (seventeen years ago)
I'm not the best guy to ask (I have no cell phone) but I have friends in Europe who just switch sim cards as they travel from e.g. France to Italy, on which they have accounts. I think they even did this when coming to the US.
― dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Monday, 25 May 2009 00:40 (seventeen years ago)
cant switch and iphone sim card. really, i dont think you need it unlocked or switched or anything
― I wish I was the royal trux (sunny successor), Monday, 25 May 2009 00:43 (seventeen years ago)
ah shit really? even if it's unlocked? I was thinking of picking one up in France next month and getting a cheap-ish one-year deal, then by French law it's unlocked after a year. I thought I could then just pop out the sim and come back to the US with an iPhone I could use on any network (not just the expensive AT&T plans). I guess I can't?
― dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Monday, 25 May 2009 00:46 (seventeen years ago)
MWhite talked about using his iphone in both the US & EU before.
Also, whens the 3.0 update supposed to come out?
― kingfish, Monday, 25 May 2009 00:48 (seventeen years ago)
well, i cant see where you could without dismantling a little. people do use them on other networks though so i guess thats what they do? im just saying if youre going to visit europe at&t probably wont be unlocking anything for you. the buying a french one idea might be a good one.
― I wish I was the royal trux (sunny successor), Monday, 25 May 2009 00:50 (seventeen years ago)
yeah I was thinking the sim was accessible w/o surgery on the phone, will have to look into this more
― dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Monday, 25 May 2009 01:17 (seventeen years ago)
its accessible! isnt it? little pinhole on the top of the phone?
― rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 25 May 2009 01:20 (seventeen years ago)
it is on my 3g at least
― rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 25 May 2009 01:21 (seventeen years ago)
gis indicates yes, in fact it looks totally easy, rock on
― dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Monday, 25 May 2009 01:25 (seventeen years ago)
If you have an AT&T phone, you will need to get it unlocked if you want to use local SIM cards. It should work all over the world, but TURN OFF DATA ROAMING (!!!!!!) if you go abroad, or you will get REAMED on your phone bill.
