is walking dogs the worst part of having dogs?

as the person on morning (6am) and afternoon (3-4 pm) poop duty in chicago in the winter, i would say yes.

but it's not so bad. i think rain is way worse than snow. picking up the poop is no big deal.

in fact, i'm about to walk these mutts right now.

cleaning cat box is really easy when you have awesoem litter. i am in love with fresh step so much that mr. pike has renamed biff "DJ FRESH STEP".

generally, you just scoop the poop up with a trowel or a scooper and you're done. emptying out a big box filled with shit and urine-soaked clumps is way worse, imo. having to look after two giant cats who pooped about 9 times a day traumatized me.

at least with the shitbox you don't have to go outside in the winter or carry a bag of poop with you. the box gets taken care of in 5 minutes.

i can't remember what kind of litter i use, it's the stuff in the orange boxes? my friends got some hippie shit that you're supposed to flush down the toilet.

the crystal cat litter is the best. it absorbs the pee so it doesnt stink or get clumpy.

arm and hammer! yeah, i used to use that stuff. it's good, but the Fresh Step will Blow Your Mind.

I'm afraid of the flushable stuff. I've already had a world of misery re: plumbing in the place I'm in now. Nothing would make me want to revisit that hellish experience (our place is a new build, and the main sewage line collapsed - yeah, gross back up IN OUR KITCHEN).

Walking a dog is way less gross than cleaning a cat box, esp. if you have a backyard. My brother bought a miniature septic system for his two dogs - just use a scooper to pick up the crap and drop it in the septic bucket.

i read an article awhile back that said it's illegal to throw away cat waste in the trash in my town? fuck that, no way i'm clogging up my toilet with that shit.

whaaa? that is absolutely bonkers.

also, good luck trying to find someone to enforce that law, town.

honestly, carrying a bag of poop is not that big of a deal. i don't really know much about cat boxes, but it's not a big whoop either way.

this trip outside was harrowing, on the other hand:

-- 15 year old cocker spaniel who cannot walk up/down 3 flights of stairs, needs to be carried
-- skittish shepherd mutt who hates rock salt because it hurts his feet
-- v v cold outside
-- ancient cocker decides that he doesn't want to walk anymore at all, sits down in the snow and refuses to move
-- forced to carry ancient cocker and drag skittish mutt up the 3 flights of stairs while trying not to slip/fall on snow/ice

the whole "taking them out" thing is not a big deal. it's the circumstances. our enemies are: mud, cold, ice, rain, rock salt.

when my schnauzer max got old, he did the same thing. he would just park it, and refuse to deal with 2 feet of buffalo snow. i'd shovel paths for him b/c if he did try to forge the snow, he'd get stuck.

i think, though, walking yr dog and cleaning the shitbox is no big deal. i mean, it's your pet, and of course you're going to do it. you love the little buttheads.

exactly. it sucks momentarily but then you realize that hey, they don't have thumbs/fingers and cannot get their own meals or poop hygienically. they need a little help. might as well help them, as they are helpless buttheads.

mine did; he also got to parade around beforehand!

cats do a funny sweeping thing, esp. if some litter gets outside the box. my one cat gertrude can often be seen sweeping up around the box, trying to get the stray litter back home. it's cute. i always make sure to thank her for trying.

wow! my cats specifically kick litter outside the box. i have to sweep it up every day. they are bitches.

Walking the dog is the best thing about having a dog!!! It forces you to get some exercise and it makes the dog so happy! (Actually v good for me as a depressio as he gives me incentive to get out of bed, ie having to take him out to potty.)
