so did they love All About Eve for its trashing of the theatuh?

(after all it was a way to avoid honoring the Hollywood horror of Sunset Blvd)

Welllll since I can't search for the actual Moonlight thread, I'll just post here that Mahershala Ali's SAG speech took my legs out from under me last night.

Wow, I was literally trying to do the same right now, trying to find a Moonlight thread! Saw it this weekend, it was great.

Little Miss Sunshine got a slated script score of 91%, the highest in their list.

Glad to see Michael Shannon get a nom for Nocturnal Animals which I just saw last night and really enjoyed. Also watched Manchester which was ok but it is not nearly as good as that guy's other two films; it's miles worse than Margaret. Moonlight is far and away the best film out of the bunch. Beckinsale def. got robbed, that was maybe my second favorite film of the year. Also saw hidden figures this week; I see the value in a movie like that but could it have been more hackneyed and disneyfied? Why insert a white saviour into that movie? for fuck's sake there is a scene where they dance in the kitchen.

It's 2017 and there are still more people who dance in their kitchens than their are black female scientists working at NASA. Hidden Figures is the movie America needs right now.

I may have to walk away from the thread because akm admitted to liking Nocturnal Animals.

I like pretentious films!

My issue withHodden Figures is really more that it portrays probably more progress than really exists. If there still aren't many black women working at NASA, NASA is partly to blame; yet NASA certainly seems to be patting itself on the back on this. I understand artistic liberties but to have the white guy come in and save everyone when this never happened is disappointing. The performances are all very good though.

I thought Nocturnal Animals stupider than Hidden Figures.

I left Hidden Figures and felt nothing except satisfaction that a movie with these actresses and this plot would become a box office hit; I turned off Nocturnal Animals devastated by the offal that fashion designers pass off as art.

As I said before, the three things Figures lionizes are women, minorities and science. What more do you want at this point in our history?

It lionzes a white guy who didn't exist in history in this particular story, which is my only problem with it.

Anyway I watched Fences last night and this movie is getting overlooked, holy shit; Denzel and Viola should both win for their categories. I think Moonlight is a better film and should win best picture, but this is my close second favorite of the year (Arrival would be third I guess).

ftr Fences was a fine, often stilted adaptation of a good American play and I've got nothing against Davis or Washington-the-actor (the problems are with Washington-the-direction). I wish Jovan Adepo and Stephen Henderson had received the attention that Davis has gotte.

I have no issues with the direction. it is stagey, and the movie doesn't move much beyond "a visual representation of a stage play" but it worked for me.

A skit they played at the Academy luncheon of Kate McKinnon playing a starlet from the '30s demonstrating how not to give an acceptance speech. Probably only funny to dedicated Oscar nuts, but anyone in old movie drag shouting "fuck" gets a laugh from me.

I've only seen one of the five performances, so I don't know who they leave out, but Rebecca Hall should have been nominated for Christine.

And Cynthia Nixon should win for A Quiet Passion, but there's a bunch of complications with that.

I've no idea why they would have deleted that Kate McK skit?

One complication is that she's not nominated.

And another complication that she probably wasn't eligible, as the film will only be released in the US this april. Still. Should have won.

Saw Lion, I thought it was really good!

that is, undoubtedly, an amazing story. Rooney Mara didn't need to be there but I understand why they'd put her in otherwise it's a guy playing with google earth for 45 minutes. The child actors in the first half are all excellent. Dev Patel was fine.

After seeing I Am Not Your Negro last night, I suspect Doris Day voted for the OJ documentary.
