how the fuck did the studio get away with getting Dev Patel into Supporting? He plays the titular character!

there's a kid who also plays him, though

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

how is Viola Davis a supporting actress?

Answer: #politics

that's one of the stronger best documentary lineups I've seen

La La Land, with 14 nominations, ties the record of "most nominations ever" with Titanic and All About Eve

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

Wow, I didn't realize it was one of the greatest films ever, but I guess Oscar has spoken!

the kid is only in the first 10-15 mins.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:49 (seven years ago) link

No way, the kid is the star for half the movie. Dev Patel doesn't show up until a full hour in.

20th nomination for Robostreep; she'll keep getting em after she expires if they digitize her into new things.

First year a John Williams score hasn't been nominated since '92.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:53 (seven years ago) link

have you seen her last couple movies? She's digitized already.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:54 (seven years ago) link

the kid in the first 45 minutes >> Patel

Kidman's nod is a joke too.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:55 (seven years ago) link

Posted in the wrong thread--very glad they had the good sense to nominate O.J. They've overlooked many other documentaries for the most specious of reasons (not sure if the television angle always kept Wiseman out), so it's good that they got this one right.

clemenza, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 16:40 (seven years ago) link

No Beckinsale or Grant, now that's a turn up as I'd bet they'll win the BAFTA in their respective categories.

the critics are raving about HACKSAW RIDGE!!!

Rex Reed of Observer rated the film with four stars and called it "the best war film since Saving Private Ryan. It is violent, harrowing, heartbreaking and unforgettable."

Michael Smith of Tulsa World called Hacksaw Ridge a "moving character study" and praised both the direction and acting. He observed: "It’s truly remarkable how Gibson can film scenes of such heartfelt emotion with such sweet subtlety as easily as he stages some of the most vicious, visual scenes of violence that you will ever see. ... Hacksaw Ridge is beautiful and brutal, and that’s a potent combination for a movie about a man determined to serve his country, as well as his soul."

IGN critic Alex Welch gave the film a score of 8/10, and praising it as "one of the most successful war films of recent memory" and "at times horrifying, inspiring, and heart-wrenching."

Mike Ryan of Uproxx gave the film a positive review, praising Gibson's direction, and saying: "There are two moments during the second half of Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge when I literally jumped out of my seat in terror. The film's depiction of war is the best I’ve seen since Saving Private Ryan."

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave the film 3.5 stars and praised it as "the best war film since Saving Private Ryan and wrote: "Thanks to some of the greatest battle scenes ever filmed, Gibson once again shows his staggering gifts as a filmmaker, able to juxtapose savagery with aching tenderness." He added: "[I]t is violent, harrowing, heartbreaking and unforgettable. And yes, it was directed by Mel Gibson. He deserves a medal, too."

Matt Zoller Seitz for RogerEbert.com gave 2.5 stars out of 4 and described it as "inept and beautiful, stupid and amazing."

nomar, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 17:24 (seven years ago) link

The first half of Hacksaw – about all I could stand before sticking the screener in my blender – was so awful that I can't imagine I care about "realistic" battles.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 17:25 (seven years ago) link

guess everyone is trying to frame Gibson's ability to not get caught saying anything antisemitic or racist on tape in a few years as a "comeback"

yeah, weird

The Gibson thing is wild to me because it's obvious that movie clearly doesn't have a fucking chance against Moonlight or La La Land or Manchester by the Sea, so they could have given that slot to Kubo and the Two Strings or whatever

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 17:38 (seven years ago) link

easily the worst of the nominees (Lion is conventional lachrymose Oscarbait).

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 17:40 (seven years ago) link

It's probably telling that I heard about Hacksaw Ridge loooooooooong before I heard that it was directed by Mel Gibson.

Lion was very not good

I heard Hacksaw Ridge, outside the theater -- BOOM BOOM BOOM

The trailer I saw only said "from the Oscar-winning director of Braveheart"

Speaking of, Mahershala Ali was very good but I feel like there had to have been some vote splitting that prevented the iterations of Chiron (particularly the latter two) from getting the acclaim they deserved this awards season.

Just noticed Ali. Hope he wins--very engaging in that film. (I assume Shannon is for Nocturnal Animals. He'd be a good choice too.)

there's nothing hollywood loves more than itself so this is no surprise

so did they love All About Eve for its trashing of the theatuh?

(after all it was a way to avoid honoring the Hollywood horror of Sunset Blvd)

As my Oscar blogging cohort just told me, Donald Trump just won The Salesman the foreign film Oscar.

Welllll since I can't search for the actual Moonlight thread, I'll just post here that Mahershala Ali's SAG speech took my legs out from under me last night.

Wow, I was literally trying to do the same right now, trying to find a Moonlight thread! Saw it this weekend, it was great.

And otm, that speech was something else.

"It bears repeating. The likelihoods of a movie being Certified Fresh, financially successful and being nominated for Academy Awards, is knowable at the point of development."

Little Miss Sunshine got a slated script score of 91%, the highest in their list.

Einstein, Kazanga, Sitar (abanana), Thursday, 2 February 2017 23:28 (seven years ago) link

Glad to see Michael Shannon get a nom for Nocturnal Animals which I just saw last night and really enjoyed. Also watched Manchester which was ok but it is not nearly as good as that guy's other two films; it's miles worse than Margaret. Moonlight is far and away the best film out of the bunch. Beckinsale def. got robbed, that was maybe my second favorite film of the year. Also saw hidden figures this week; I see the value in a movie like that but could it have been more hackneyed and disneyfied? Why insert a white saviour into that movie? for fuck's sake there is a scene where they dance in the kitchen.

akm, Saturday, 4 February 2017 18:02 (seven years ago) link

It's 2017 and there are still more people who dance in their kitchens than their are black female scientists working at NASA. Hidden Figures is the movie America needs right now.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Saturday, 4 February 2017 18:37 (seven years ago) link

I may have to walk away from the thread because akm admitted to liking Nocturnal Animals.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 February 2017 18:56 (seven years ago) link

I like pretentious films!

My issue withHodden Figures is really more that it portrays probably more progress than really exists. If there still aren't many black women working at NASA, NASA is partly to blame; yet NASA certainly seems to be patting itself on the back on this. I understand artistic liberties but to have the white guy come in and save everyone when this never happened is disappointing. The performances are all very good though.

akm, Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:16 (seven years ago) link

I thought Nocturnal Animals stupider than Hidden Figures.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:17 (seven years ago) link

I left Hidden Figures and felt nothing except satisfaction that a movie with these actresses and this plot would become a box office hit; I turned off Nocturnal Animals devastated by the offal that fashion designers pass off as art.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:18 (seven years ago) link

As I said before, the three things Figures lionizes are women, minorities and science. What more do you want at this point in our history?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:25 (seven years ago) link

well said but i still aint seein it

johnny crunch, Saturday, 4 February 2017 21:10 (seven years ago) link

It lionzes a white guy who didn't exist in history in this particular story, which is my only problem with it.
