Yup. Dogs can get pretty badly ripped up in that kind of fight, as opposed to the usually brief and limited fights for dominance dogs engage in on their own initiative. Moreover, owners of fighting dogs generally don't care much for dogs that lose. It's not like they get to retire to a life of ear-scratches, free food and chasing tennis balls.
