i was talking to my only other friend that listens to this and we agreed that the guilty pleasure of it must be kinda like what my dad felt listening to limbaugh

like its obviously kinda lame/bad on a lot of levels, but there is something nice about hearing roasts of the enemy from ppl with something vaguely approximating my political views

my main beef w this pod is that Felix' used to be one of my fav dumb jokes twitters and now he is like, a funny version of Dr Morbius? 100% of the time? and also says angry earnest political things? half of weird twitter had the same political conversion and are determined to relive the '16 dem primary for all of eternity, and I see the success of chapo as perpetuating to ruining my twitter xp. i listened to the first few eps contemporaneously and they were p funny but it felt a bit too navel-gazing and also that listening to podcasts about twitter was not a welcome extension of my internet/twitter addiction. also, ideologically i'm way more aligned with the nebbish centre-left dorks they bully than like, Lee Fang or Adam Curtis (who, i mean, i like his docs but he's always verged on this mind-control meta-conspiracy i don't buy at all--the quote itt was nice, though) or whoever they have on the show, so there was a masochistic dimension to it

this thread is like those d-40 posts where he's like "Listen to how Durk says 'I'm a hitta' on the offbeat, but Derk says it on the on-beat and Dirk says it somewhere in between and tell me that Durk isn't realigning what pop music means for a generation and Derk isn't some lame drama school tryhard smh"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 19:01 (nine years ago)

yeah, CTH guys seem like slightly more effective and functional ilxor types so i figure the grief they're getting here is rooted in some sort of self-loathing.

there's nothing really particularly noteworthy about this podcast imo but when a new yorker article gets written about some "brooklyn-based x" we definitely need to spend >200 posts arguing about whether x deserves the attention

marcos, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 19:10 (nine years ago)

omg ilx podcasting sounds hellish. i have no doubt though that we have numerous posters who could easily make a podcast equal in quality, style, knowledge + perspective to this one. actually depending on who you picked it would probably have more political diversity (and ilx is hardly a bastion of heterogenous thought).

Mordy, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 19:11 (nine years ago)

xp. i dunno they're making $35k a month from a podcast it's fairly notable as far as podcasts go

i mean i don't find anything particularly objectionable about the podcast itself, it is a fun podcast and like i said similar to a bunch of poltical commentary i've heard on on college radio from undergrads but the effusive praise from like the av club and paste magazine is very suspect imo

marcos, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 19:31 (nine years ago)

okay maybe it is better than the stuff from undergrads

marcos, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 19:32 (nine years ago)

probably true, but the trick is bootstrapping your podcast into enough popularity that you generate word of mouth and accumulate an audience. quality, style, knowledge + perspective are not magic keys to such popularity. unlike field of dreams, we could build it, but would they come?

also I don't know if you guys knew this but regularly recording, editing, uploading, and promoting podcasts if you're not already getting paid for it is a tremendous pain in the ass

ok god willing this is my last post on this thread ever. i listened to the d'souza episode. they are terminally unfunny. they're constantly laughing at their own jokes which entirely amount to /references/. "better call saul." "better call saul alinsky!" ahahahahaha "episode title!" for all of u that enjoy them tho, as someone who often likes things that other ppl don't enjoy, i say go for it. but the problem for me at least is not narcissism of small differences. it's just unfunniness.

― marcos, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 19:28 (eighteen minutes ago) Permalink

nah, i don't think it's relevant. the new yorker article was part of a p low-key web-only profile series, and it was written by a former Gawker writer (other profiles i've seen were also written by ppl who run in the same circles on twitter) so imo it's just writers in the same clique writing about each other at the earliest whiff of significance

This ain't going away anytime soon, but as you have plenty of people still slinging " Berniebro" as it were a valid descriptor or insult, I would posit not being people who voted for Sanders in the primaries being the cause.

Plus, as mentioned plenty of times on our board, there are a great many well-heeled stakeholders who ain't giving up control of the Democratic Party. Christ, the Third Way types just dumped $20M into the mix.

I'm planning to do a Twin Peaks thing with a friend of mine who has written for Film Comment, MORE I CANNOT SAY

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 18 January 2017 20:11 (nine years ago)

Are you going to edit it yourself? Editing for me is the hardest part due to how much I detest my voice and speaking habits.

Also because all the shows I recorded were like 2 hours and change, and cutting that down to something decent and inserting relevant audio takes me something like 8-10 hours an episode.

THE SKURJ OF FAKE NEWS. (kingfish), Wednesday, 18 January 2017 20:14 (nine years ago)

Yeah I'm gonna have to do all the work, cause my partner is way too busy with school etc to put in any extra time. I try to keep a pretty strict 60 min time limit for this reason.

I've never called anyone a Bernie Bro (I'm aware that's hurtful)but we can acknowledge both sides perpetuate this. Seems unreasonable not to. I mean just recently I had to see so many people seemingly way more outraged with Booker for voting against Bernie's amendment (despite voting for a similar one w tougher measures the same night) then they were about the GOP taking people' healthcare away, removing protection for pre-existing conditions, disassembling the C.H.I.P program etc the same night. Not to say there aren't unreasonably anti-Bernie Dems making extreme claims right now too.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 20:18 (nine years ago)

It seems like every time I object to anything a democrat does, someone jumps in with "Why do you care more about that than x bad thing GOP is doing?" Who says I care "more" about it? I still care about it. No way I'm getting on board with a democrats-are-off-limits policy no matter who's in office. Also, can't help but think the response would be different if it were Joe Manchin instead of Cory Booker. Booker is both targeted and defended because he's seen as a contender for 2020. Some of us don't really think he's an ideal choice. Some people who do seem to think the strategy should be exactly what it was in 2016 -- shoot down anyone who disagrees because they're fucking up the plan.
