just saw all this, not sure how kevin k would have much idea about my intelligence anyway - in the case of jeet i'd say self-awareness is a vital part of intelligence, though that's just my opinion.
fwiw i also thought manthreading was a fairly silly way of describing it but the main thrust of the article, that there are lots of really poorly constructed threads, was pretty sound. it's not just political threads either, i'm starting to see people do long threads about their lives or their childhood or something. the fact that jeet calls them "essays" is fairly off too - i'd say a thread on twitter is more similar to a speech or a rant, or a presentation maybe.
these two tweets were a p comprehensive takedown:

Somehow a tweet of mine made it into a Twitter Moment™ despite the fact that it didn't have any likes or retweets. (It's accumulated a few since.) Weird.

everyone's missing the point w/ joshtpm... that is obv the sort of tastefully banal vid someone would intentionally select to attempt a risque take, but in order to be able to make that informed selection at all he has outed himself as the wild degenerate porn head

can someone explain the phenom of people changing their first name to "punished" -- like "Joe Smith" becomes "<Punished> Smith".
Is this a reference to something that i'm missing? it must be.

After thinking about it for an extremely long time I have decided JoshTPM is not a kink double agent. He is a genuinely boring "tasteful pornography" enthusiast who also enjoys his moderate amounts of wine and liquor. There is no top-secret WAM+pegging cache. He's just a hard working Ph. D. with his own small business. He loves him some Bob Dylan. He's boring as fuck!

― rip van wanko, Friday, 6 January 2017 20:57 (seven years ago) link
eh journalists are pretty central to my twitter experience. if you just care about your buddies and weird twitter i don't see why tumblr can't fulfill that need
― k3vin k., Friday, 6 January 2017 21:09 (seven years ago) link

Apart from the occasional fix of arty smut tumblr never served any purpose for me. Not been on tumblr for years. It doesn't exist anymore in my world and I have no idea what the hell, if anything, is going on there these days.
Twitter without journos though: where's the fun in that?
― Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 7 January 2017 00:11 (seven years ago) link
journos on twitter is actually how you get the arty smut fix these days

I think it sucks that Twitter has turned out to be a real boon for, more than anyone else, a coterie swho already write for a living, already has a venue for its work, already has a following . Of ourse I can, and have, curated my feed to exclude all but a few, but the Big Thing on Twitter will always center around a journalistic figure and here new piece/latest beef etc. I like to imagine a Twitter where these already prominent figures (good as many may be) were not allowed to step in and take over.
― rip van wanko, Saturday, 7 January 2017 09:50 (seven years ago) link
ack, sorry for errors, it's late

I really dislike this new thing (new to me, anyhow) of seeing tweets liked by people I follow on my timeline. Is there a way to turn it off?
― heaven parker (anagram), Saturday, 7 January 2017 11:37 (seven years ago) link
Wow, not heard of that before, that would annoy the shit out of me. Idk I use tweetbot, I want Twitter to a linear flow. The Twitter desktop and app are so annoying ever since they introduced the 'while you were away' stuff. It breaks the flow. (This is not helpful for you anagram, soz)
― Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 7 January 2017 11:46 (seven years ago) link
i find not using twitter eliminates this minor annoyance associated with twitter
