idk man i find the pile-on tiring. jeet may be a lot of things (humorless, lacking in self-awareness), but at the very least he's curious about the world around him and can think for himself. give me that over a white guy who uses "manthreading" unironically

if it's a bunch of people doing this it's lame, but if it truly is a bunch of people then why the hell is he wasting time responding to individuals

manthreading has to do with your eyebrows

I think they go to the last remaining bookstore in their city to browse and maybe buy a book, and then they take out their phone and then an hour or two later another shopper says "excuse me" because they are standing in front of some good books, and the twitter person is like "shit" and moves, and then realizes they are late for a thing and they have had nothing to eat since 9am

imo twitter is an excellent platform for roasting ppl jeets doing fine he cn deal

i think "manthreading" was funny and tongue in cheek, knowing that the people who are guilty of it would either get the simile or blow up because they're humorless

it's not like men talking over people, but it often has the same run-on nature and linking the two is funny, although that appeal is limited to people who read a zillion "mansplaining" articles

i read the article and it was bad

which all the main tweetstorm ppl aspire to in that hyper-tweeting in-crowd has an intersecting set of lingo

and it's all ppl who aspire to be heard so badly

ya it was obvs provocation targeting the humorless and pompous and anyone with any sense wldve steered clear or jsut laughed it off

the risible portmanteaus are so tired at this point

i agree jeet heer is mockable, i don't even like him that much or whatever, i just think we can do better than that attempt

that article was just baiting MRAs. no one thinks only men use that feature of twitter.

u know whats not funny and actually terrible about twitter tho is the woman who wrote it had a ton of in earnest very nasty shit directed at her over it

yeah but that was the evil plan of the editors of gizmodo. they used her as live bait to draw clicks. isn't so funny.

imo the best part was that a ton of tweets have been made out of this "manthreading" article, treating it as something as significance because it was a published article on a blog

if an article gets traction its def more powerful than a tweetstorm but if u have a large twitter following yr average tweetstorm will get more eyeballs than yr average article

he does this kind of nerdy canadian writer thing in actual publications and his aspirational career thread (lol) was publishing... a book of his tweetstorms

i was at a bookstore with two people from his town and when i pointed it out had to explain who he was because they had no idea

also he did the corporate email thing with his twitter handle so people keep screwing up his first and last name and i feel for him

tweetstorms are good imo. big ass rectangular blocks of prose an inappropriate way to express 99% of info u read online. so many times i read and articles and the preamble was like the first 8 paragraphs and the actual new info could be expressed in a handful lines. lists, threaded tweets, hell just straight bullet point form shit

if we want to get deep the subtext of the manthreading complaint is twitter used to be fun before it was populated with oblivious careerists

whether or not thats true who knows its prob kinda true, also media ppl are basically required to be on there even if they find it hellish which is another angle

crazy to think u have to be in this place for work where anonymous strangers direct sexist threats at u wattba

btw he starts out saying he's a "twitter essayist" then says "blogs are much like essays" but claims often they lack a professional imprimatur

like the main idea is that he's facilitating a conversation in public with input and conversational sidetracks via retweets which is sometimes true! but the fact there is such a thing as a chain of tweets now (although the interface has changed since he started) basically shows the whole numbered thing is dumb -- all it does is show it's his conversation and these are the canonical signposts because other participants don't get numbers

controversial opinion: the numbers are good because sometimes the threading gets fucked up

i just realized he has basically recreated the UK prime minister's "question time" where one man speakers and others interject questions and heckles

the numbers function purely to indicate that its a tweetstorm, particularly in the context of a rt u think oh hey maybe ill read the whole thing, like they cld be replaced with a designated emoji and nothing wld change, some crazy semiotics 2 think abt

which makes the numbers i think the real sticking point, its an advertisement, its belies the pomposity and desperation beneath the casual a few thought on...

tho the numbers do predate twitter threading so theyre also vestigial

it's fine to have a few thoughts on a topic imo

basically i think twitter just needs a way to point to a single tweet and then show everything that person tweeted after that chronologically and you can just jump off when you realize they're off the topic or boring
