y'know, I actually think this is fair enough:

She's admitting that, even though she's pro-abortion, she has internalised the shaming of abortion. I mean, she put it across in an ultimately clumsy manner, but what she's saying is ultimately self-deprecating and making a point about the cultural discourse surrounding abortion infecting even those who explicitly support abortion.

i don't think people had an issue with that part (though "unblemished" is kinda....eh...) it's the tone deaf faux bragging at the end.

hard to see any situation where it wouldn't come out well. advocating for the blind: "I'm not blind, but i wish i was".

yeah, well, that is a little (a lot) clumsy. it doesn't invalidate her larger point though.

in general i think ppl who have actually had abortions might give a little more of a fuck about that idiotic statement than you internet bros

and that john waters thing is so clearly a different context and with different aims, i don't see how it's relevant.

Both before and after, she seems focused on herself rather than the issue. Before: I need to make sure people know I didn't have one even though I'm advocating it. After: Now that I'm woke, I wish I had had an abortion so I could have the cred.

ive laughed a lot @ this season

really great episode of this show, but I imagine it's going to piss a lot of people off

I've given up on this show but my wife still watches it out of morbid curiosity.

surprised Dunham didn't just name the author character "Woody" if she was so intent on being keeping things "subtle" and "ambiguous".

this show went from amusing to awful really fast (ie by the end of season 3)

idk i think it's funnier now (last season and the first few eps of this season) than it's ever been.

yeah i think it's definitely been really funny.

feel like desi is just a pitch perfectly written douchebag. he literally can't do or say anything that isn't absolutely teeth-grindingly awful.

also glad it's coming to an end tho, and there hasn't been enough adam (for obvious reasons) in the first 2 episodes - haven't seen the latest ep

latest ep is literally Hannah and some dude for the entire ep

yeah and it's very good. as was the similar episode last season

first three eps this season are supposed to be one off stories she's always wanted to tell, according to something i read in a not-entirely-reliable magazine I was working on the other day. the first two eps this season i have been RMDE the first couple of minutes and then really enjoying it. But she's run out of interesting things to do with the central friend group, and that's why every ep so far has felt like a Very Special Episode.

Elijah has the odd good line but he doesn't work when give actual storylines, esp that one last year with the bald dude.

I really didn't feel much abt this standalone ep other than it is a effective and well done piece of propaganda essentially. also that if I watched this w/o lena acting in it & knowing nothing abt it, I would 1000% know that she made it. & I mean none of that negatively

my wife is still committed to this but I really do wish this series would end with ever character getting murdered. Preferably by Laird. All plot mechanics point to a standard Apatow domestic bliss ending which uggghhh

honestly very little about the show has felt very Apatow-ish for a long time. Love (which sucks) feels much closer to his usual shtick.

you don't think this is all headed towards "Adam + Hannah + And Baby Makes Three" territory? Complete w "I know we're crazy and maybe it's a bad idea but we're gonna try cuz we love each other!" resolution?

I've been enjoying it but yeah I have the sinking feeling that's where it's headed.

two things I genuinely lol'd at this season: "he looks like someone from the pacific northwest knitted a man" and Rita Wilson's on-stage musical improvisations

i can't really pinpoint why but every time this show veers from the comedic to the dramatic I just never buy into it. Perhaps because the characters seems like bundles of neuroses a la Seinfeld rather than people.

yup. every single one would be insufferable irl. treating them as characters that we're supposed to care about is misguided.

when ray and shoshanna had their little breakfast conversation and ripped on krugman i found them both quite likable and relatable.

over all the characters are hard to care about tho for sure

although I'm planning on watching season 3 of transparent this weekend so girls' characters may seem benign by the time I'm done with that

season 3 of transparent is a landscape of dickholes but it's a great show

Didn't realize that's Gary Shteyngart playing novelist Chuck Palmer in that good one-scene episode a few weeks back.

glad the show won't end up with hannah and adam back together, but i felt like i could see that episode's ending coming at the very beginning of it

Gotta say the scene in the restaurant where Hannah tears up and Adam gets the message was really well done.

maybe I was tired but I TOTALLY didn't get it! Not until the "inside this episode" when they talked about Adam and Hannah's Last Hurrah. I really thought they were just being super confused and emotional but were going to try it. I don't buy them going to that diner though. That's the worst diner in NYC. I don't think anybody who lives in brooklyn goes there.
