I think she is a talented writer too but it bothers me that she is put forward as some kind of cultural spokesperson in spite of what seems to be pretty narrow appeal and popularity. It feels very much like media class narcissism that she is so favored and promoted in the media.

I know so few people who watched Girls at all, and the ones who did were pretty lukewarm about it after a season or two. I've never met a single person who read her book or reads the Lenny Letter or whatever it's called. But she gets put on stage at the Democratic convention as some kind of representative of, idk, the hip kids today?

Yeah I agree. And I think her purposefully risible political stances actively damage the causes she is trying to further.

Treeship, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 20:47 (nine years ago)

lol even in 2011 her hipness was dated

(•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 20:48 (nine years ago)

Hahaah this reminds me of the "Better Things" episode where the group ask each other how many abortions they've had. But even that episode wasn't really making it a source of pride.

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 20:50 (nine years ago)

She's connected, and goes to the right parties.

As indicated above, i thought the show got better after the first season.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 20:50 (nine years ago)

true I think i liked season 2 more than the first now that i think about it.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 20:52 (nine years ago)

Show sort of got out of its depth with the darker episodes.

Treeship, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 20:56 (nine years ago)

But it took risks.

Treeship, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 20:56 (nine years ago)

Which is good.

Treeship, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 20:57 (nine years ago)

and that's okay

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 22:17 (nine years ago)

the last couple seasons have been really good tbh

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 23:33 (nine years ago)

i think the show is fine. I think the comment is fine. who cares.

akm, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 23:47 (nine years ago)

maybe she should've aborted that comment

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 23:52 (nine years ago)

I like the graphic design/typeface on her book cover.

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 00:12 (nine years ago)

no matter how bad Girls has gotten or will get, it will always be worth it for this scene alone

y'know, I actually think this is fair enough:

It was then, Dunham said, she realized "Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman’s right to choose, felt it was important that people know I was unblemished in this department."

She's admitting that, even though she's pro-abortion, she has internalised the shaming of abortion. I mean, she put it across in an ultimately clumsy manner, but what she's saying is ultimately self-deprecating and making a point about the cultural discourse surrounding abortion infecting even those who explicitly support abortion.

i don't think people had an issue with that part (though "unblemished" is kinda....eh...) it's the tone deaf faux bragging at the end.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 12:17 (nine years ago)

hard to see any situation where it wouldn't come out well. advocating for the blind: "I'm not blind, but i wish i was".

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 12:20 (nine years ago)

yeah, well, that is a little (a lot) clumsy. it doesn't invalidate her larger point though.

There shouldn't be a thread for Dennis Perrin tweets (stevie), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 12:23 (nine years ago)

not to the extent that her point was mostly about realizing she's full of shit

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 12:31 (nine years ago)

in general i think ppl who have actually had abortions might give a little more of a fuck about that idiotic statement than you internet bros

and that john waters thing is so clearly a different context and with different aims, i don't see how it's relevant.

circa1916, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 13:29 (nine years ago)

Because I said so.

jane burkini (suzy), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 13:32 (nine years ago)

Both before and after, she seems focused on herself rather than the issue. Before: I need to make sure people know I didn't have one even though I'm advocating it. After: Now that I'm woke, I wish I had had an abortion so I could have the cred.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:23 (nine years ago)

just seems to be minimize the massive physical loss and pain experienced in the process

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:45 (nine years ago)

tho i guess it is a statement of empathy? however badly worded

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:46 (nine years ago)

yeah, well, that is a little (a lot) clumsy. it doesn't invalidate her larger point though.

lol

Her apology is so ridiculous. She is the monster the liberals deserve in 2016.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 23:02 (nine years ago)

@people
.@LenaDunham says she's had her period for 13 days

I do in some rare cases favor the immediate and irrevocable loss of citizenship, if not imprisonment without trial.

one month passes...

lol desi

the klosterman weekend (s.clover), Sunday, 19 February 2017 06:07 (nine years ago)

ok wow that episode was intense

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 26 February 2017 12:50 (nine years ago)

ive laughed a lot @ this season

johnny crunch, Sunday, 26 February 2017 13:53 (nine years ago)

really great episode of this show, but I imagine it's going to piss a lot of people off

akm, Monday, 27 February 2017 14:05 (nine years ago)

I've given up on this show but my wife still watches it out of morbid curiosity.

surprised Dunham didn't just name the author character "Woody" if she was so intent on being keeping things "subtle" and "ambiguous".

this show went from amusing to awful really fast (ie by the end of season 3)

Οὖτις, Monday, 27 February 2017 17:13 (nine years ago)

idk i think it's funnier now (last season and the first few eps of this season) than it's ever been.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 27 February 2017 17:16 (nine years ago)

yeah i think it's definitely been really funny.

feel like desi is just a pitch perfectly written douchebag. he literally can't do or say anything that isn't absolutely teeth-grindingly awful.

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Monday, 27 February 2017 17:22 (nine years ago)

also glad it's coming to an end tho, and there hasn't been enough adam (for obvious reasons) in the first 2 episodes - haven't seen the latest ep

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Monday, 27 February 2017 17:23 (nine years ago)

latest ep is literally Hannah and some dude for the entire ep

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 27 February 2017 18:42 (nine years ago)

yeah and it's very good. as was the similar episode last season

akm, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:44 (nine years ago)

first three eps this season are supposed to be one off stories she's always wanted to tell, according to something i read in a not-entirely-reliable magazine I was working on the other day. the first two eps this season i have been RMDE the first couple of minutes and then really enjoying it. But she's run out of interesting things to do with the central friend group, and that's why every ep so far has felt like a Very Special Episode.

Dysphagia Nutrition Solutions (stevie), Monday, 27 February 2017 19:01 (nine years ago)

Elijah has the odd good line but he doesn't work when give actual storylines, esp that one last year with the bald dude.

Dysphagia Nutrition Solutions (stevie), Monday, 27 February 2017 19:01 (nine years ago)

I really didn't feel much abt this standalone ep other than it is a effective and well done piece of propaganda essentially. also that if I watched this w/o lena acting in it & knowing nothing abt it, I would 1000% know that she made it. & I mean none of that negatively

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 1 March 2017 14:09 (nine years ago)

@NickPinkerton
What if Girls S6 ends with Kurt Raab rushing in and, Herr R.-style, dashing everyone's brains out with a candlestick?

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 15:59 (nine years ago)

sounds ideal

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 16:11 (nine years ago)

my wife is still committed to this but I really do wish this series would end with ever character getting murdered. Preferably by Laird. All plot mechanics point to a standard Apatow domestic bliss ending which uggghhh

Οὖτις, Monday, 20 March 2017 20:26 (nine years ago)

honestly very little about the show has felt very Apatow-ish for a long time. Love (which sucks) feels much closer to his usual shtick.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 March 2017 20:35 (nine years ago)

you don't think this is all headed towards "Adam + Hannah + And Baby Makes Three" territory? Complete w "I know we're crazy and maybe it's a bad idea but we're gonna try cuz we love each other!" resolution?

Οὖτις, Monday, 20 March 2017 20:40 (nine years ago)

I've been enjoying it but yeah I have the sinking feeling that's where it's headed.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 20 March 2017 20:42 (nine years ago)

two things I genuinely lol'd at this season: "he looks like someone from the pacific northwest knitted a man" and Rita Wilson's on-stage musical improvisations

Οὖτις, Monday, 20 March 2017 20:46 (nine years ago)

that's p much it tho
