I think I eat way more cake just cause we live in a cake-centric world but when I think about this, I think I am actually a pie man

I say pie. You can have pie for breakfast, make them sweet or savory, they can have fruit or cream and other stuff, and best of all is the pie shake, a milkshake made by blending in a slice of pie, which is the best thing ever.
I'm making two cakes next week, a red velvet and a boozy rum cake. The latter is super complicated, and a good cake is much more satisfying, to me as a baker, than a good pie. But I still vote pie. Plus, like, pie in the face! You can't do that with cake, except during weddings, and that's a dumb tradition, anyway, to shove cake in each other's face. I don't think anyone would deny a much better tradition would be for the best man getting you with a pie in the face. Some time, at the reception, when you least expect it. That would be hilarious. The groom would be having a great time, but always, in the back of his mind, he'll be wondering: when is he going to get me? Maybe it will even happen during dessert, when he's having cake. Who knows?

My favorite pies are pear-cherry, chocolate chess, sugar cream ... Banana cream pie done well is awesome, but it rarely happens. I can make a mean lemon-blueberry. Man, pie. And pie with a scoop of ice-cream is just so good. The only people who have cake and ice cream together are children, but they'll eat anything. Ask Carvel.

Not real into pies... I'm a big fan of cream pies -- banana cream & coconut cream are my favs.
Cake is disgusting.
― Frobisher, Friday, 16 December 2016 23:47 (seven years ago) link
Oh man pear-cherry sounds great, cherry-only is often a bit much for me.

Pie.
But on the Maine blueberry tip, I gotta insist that Maine blueberries are a totally, demonstrably different species from regular blueberries - neither better nor worse - but smaller and sweeter. But eff a man who abstains from a BBP on account of species loyalty.

I voted pie but I have to mention the deconstructed cheese course my daughter had when we went out for a birthday dinner for my wife Thursday — pear spice cake with blue cheese frosting, served with candied walnuts and port sorbet. Sometimes cake is the proper structure for playing around with flavors.

there's no food that can't be improved by turning it into a pie. can't say the same about cake. too easy a decision.

― Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 10:53 (seven years ago) link
Can't believe this shit tbh.
Pizza is not a pie. It's stuff-on-bread. You'd never say cheese-on-toast was a fucking pie.
Quiche is not a pie either, ffs. It's stuff-on-pastry. A pie has a LID. That's how you know it's a pie. Cottage pie. Fish pie. Defined by their lids.
A sausage roll is not a pie, either, not everything with pastry is a fucking pie.
Cheesecake is a CAKE. That's why it's called cheeseCAKE.
Americans are foul and wrong. First they elected Trump and now this.

more than any other food, even passable pies and cakes sometimes just feel like big hunks of stuff, and eating them becomes a very self-conscious process of piling this inert matter into your mouth. even the most disastrous cake is recognisably human in its origins, but the worst pies are inedible, anti-human husks, baked deposits that instill a dasein dread and are only fit to be buried deep in the earth. a truly awful pie makes the world colder and gloomier
on the other hand they can both be delicious

false, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie etc don't have lids
quiche is a pie
― marcos, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link
if you have to bake it in a pie dish then it is a pie
but i admit there are other pies that are not baked in pie dishes. galettes are pies right
the lid is a red herring, i would put quiches, flans, tarts in to the realm of pie, which is really "solid (baked?) crust plus filling" - i'd say pizza is an outlier but not argue too hard, a calzone is more or less a pasty - which also belongs to the realm of pie, alongside sausage rolls

― aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:15 (seven years ago) link
Shepherds pie. Cottage pie. Fish pie. No crusts, no bases, no pastry at all. Several pies in the uk just have pastry lids and no bottom.
