i liked how mr. garrison's rallies were like stand up comedy sets

Treeship, Monday, 12 December 2016 06:00 (nine years ago)

there are lot of interesting ideas that had promise but have either lost steam and deflated or were completely given up. Cartman being woke sort of just gradually stops happening. the Memberberries kept hinting at some far more interesting plot than the ham-fisted commentary (them all lined up in the white house). the internet troll subplot was kinda cool but apparently that's over now and the resolution left no change in the world so it was pointless outside of some more ham-fisted commentary ("Pushing buttons is good for humanity", etc).

not that the show isn't still funny from time to time but at the start of the season it felt like they may be sacrificing humor for the serialization: even if it wasn't funny, it was going to be interesting to see where it goes. now even that is wearing thin. not only is the humor low, the serialization is aimless and not interesting.

the serialization is really hurting this show. they need to get back on that flavor of the week thing.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 12 December 2016 17:50 (nine years ago)

Did you notice the title of the finale?

This season went completely off the rails, but in a pretty interesting way. They needed time to prepare for the Trump era and they had none.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 12 December 2016 18:05 (nine years ago)

don't they make these episodes in like a week

Οὖτις, Monday, 12 December 2016 20:47 (nine years ago)

Yeah but existential crisis-inducing paradigm shifts probably take > a week to turn into animated comedy scripts, I would assume.

The Pleasure Principal (Old Lunch), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:51 (nine years ago)

they had less than 24 hours (probably closer to 12) to adjust the election episode

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:54 (nine years ago)

they had like a year and 4 months to consider it

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:59 (nine years ago)

xpost i noticed the title, honestly didn't realize it was the season finale. they resolved one plot (with another hilarious Star Wars-is-hacky joke) and left a bunch of stuff out there.

it's weird, the entire season felt like a two-parter that was half finished and stretched out for season length.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 12 December 2016 21:53 (nine years ago)

like the us election so

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 22 September 2017 14:06 (eight years ago)

last episode felt like it was for media junkies who think "Delete your account" was brilliant satire

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 22 September 2017 14:07 (eight years ago)

aw i liked cartman's suicide-pop parody

maura, Friday, 22 September 2017 16:32 (eight years ago)

Thought this was a major improvement over last week

And that cartman rap was a clear nod to that logic song

rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Friday, 22 September 2017 16:35 (eight years ago)

last week's was so bad, outside of that great scene w Cartman surrounded by smart devices all chanting at each other. feel like they referenced that here with Tweek and all the fidget spinners.

ive come to accept the politics of this show are incoherent by design, they are just pop culture references, nothing intended. they need to focus more on the kids, kinda getting tired of Cartman's white knight thing, next episode he is going to be an annoying Climate Change guy.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 22 September 2017 16:49 (eight years ago)

they are funniest when making fun of consumerism and how these things divide the kids.

I loved Tweek's song at the beginning if I'm honest.

thank you. tell that to the alt-right thread.

no one was talking to you.

billstevejim, Friday, 22 September 2017 20:44 (eight years ago)

xp Cartman's 1st song was the only good part sadly.

Tweek's song at the very beginning was a good song but I didn't laugh. I was just feelin' his song.

basically have come to the realization that this show taught my entire generation that caring about things is deeply uncool and that the truth is always somewhere in the middle, both philosophies which led us directly into the hellscape we're in today

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 18:58 (seven years ago)

they do exemplify the earliest stirrings of that intersection between tech nerds, libertarianism, and racism/being "offensive" as an end in istelf (4chan etc). It's no coincidence that the first people I knew who had the original Xmas card short and absolutely died laughing at it/thought it were the best thing ever were tech nerds at Burning Man in 1996.

Parker & Stone stink of rich chud-ism and i suspect SP is a key reason that Trump has any kind of support among people under the age of 36 at all.

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:14 (seven years ago)

Counterpoint: anyone with functioning critical faculties can enjoy the funny bits and tell Trey & Matt to stfu on the many occasions when it's warranted.

Which is to say that the real issue is the faulty critical faculties that might allow anyone to think it's cool to allow a crudely-animated cartoon to influence any part of their worldview.

Not with a bang but a MAGA (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:15 (seven years ago)

Like, I definitely share your concerns in a general sense, frogs. I just don't think SP is to blame.

Not with a bang but a MAGA (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:16 (seven years ago)

gotta love libertarians who think empirical science is "lol gay"

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:16 (seven years ago)

you don't think SP's massive success served as a model for anyone/anything?

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:18 (seven years ago)

Sure. But to the extent that that's true, it's because a lot of people's brains are constantly sputtering and emitting showers of sparks.

Not with a bang but a MAGA (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:23 (seven years ago)

if you believe people get their moral centers wholly from a single cartoon they watched as a kid then yeah knock yourself out blaming these guys

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:24 (seven years ago)

The one SP moment that actually stuck with me as somewhat profound was in the n-word episode when Stan finally conceded that he didn't understand Token's experience and never fully would. Pretty much everything else has been ignorable stupidity that occasionally makes me laugh.

Not with a bang but a MAGA (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:25 (seven years ago)

maybe it was a little irresponsible of them to fan said sputtering showers of sparks with dynamite, imo

my position isn't as simple as "people get their moral centers wholly from a single cartoon", it's that they played a role in the broader culture which normalized and "made cool" a bunch of positions, modes of discourse, and imagery that were previously beyond the pale and relegated to the fringes.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:26 (seven years ago)

they are part of a cultural strain that equated being offensive with a mark of quality in and of itself - they weren't the first to do it by any means, but they definitely served as an amplifier for it as a raison d'etre

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:28 (seven years ago)

white guys enjoying the privilege of being transgressive, what could go wrong

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:29 (seven years ago)

i can't really speak to later years of south park as i checked out over a decade ago but while i enjoyed it when it was just an offensive dumb cartoon, and i was a teenager, increasingly south park became a very political show promoting, in almost every episode, an anti-pc libertarianism, and lib-baiting.

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:37 (seven years ago)

Parker & Stone are far from beyond criticism, but blaming a dumb cartoon for society's ills is kind of along the lines of Grisham blaming Natural Born Killers for his friend's murder.

Not with a bang but a MAGA (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:38 (seven years ago)

xp. although we've gotten a bit past anti-pic libertarianism now with the alt-right (though libertarianism is a gateway drug to white supremacy and fascism generally)
