I decalcified The Machine today.
I still drink Italian espresso house blend from the place down the street. And yet there's so much opportunity here to branch out. But it's good! My excuse is obstinance+frugality :/

I got a thermos recently. It's like a miracle -- hot coffee throughout the day. So much better than standard travel mugs.

Treeship, Thursday, 8 December 2016 03:45 (nine years ago)

I dont even understand how it works.

Treeship, Thursday, 8 December 2016 03:47 (nine years ago)

nothin like a reliable thermos to keep yr cof hot

the heat thief gnomes use molecules to steal heat, so you surround the liquid with an area that has no molecules in it... fiendishly clever

Not following. Need this explained in a ted talk format that connects to my day to day life

You know how there's no sound in space, because there's no transmission mechanism? It's like that, coffee needs an esophagus to travel through

Add a dash of Thomas Friedman and it will click. I'm on the verge of grasping how vacuums help in insulation

Treeship, Thursday, 8 December 2016 05:24 (nine years ago)

I have to drive 20-25 minutes to get freshly roasted coffee, so this looked interesting as a stopgap when I run out until I went to the price part and realized that my usual Chemex pot of iced coffee would be $7(or maybe even $14, I use 40g of coffee)

one month passes...

Blue Bottle's Three Africas blend is so good.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 18 January 2017 21:09 (nine years ago)

Just got a Bonavita BV1800 drip coffee maker. For some reason it makes really good coffee, despite its simplicity.

Evan, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 21:17 (nine years ago)

i think one of the big reasons is that it brews at a higher temp than most drip machines. i attended a 3-hour lecture/tasting with george howell recently and they brewed everything on a bonavita

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 21:19 (nine years ago)

I use my Chemex with the Bonavita, the showerhead is perfect for a 6-8 cup Chemex and I don't have to stand there pouring on top of a scale.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 19 January 2017 08:26 (nine years ago)

The Ratio Eight does basically the same thing for $600 but looks better. I'll stick with the Bonavita.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 19 January 2017 08:27 (nine years ago)

Chemex has been treating me real well lately. Drinking my cof right now. mmmmmmmmmmm.....

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Thursday, 19 January 2017 14:45 (nine years ago)

yea im pretty happy w/ my chemex too

marcos, Thursday, 19 January 2017 14:49 (nine years ago)

weekdays i still use the bialetti moka pot, it's faster

marcos, Thursday, 19 January 2017 14:49 (nine years ago)

thinkin bout getting a chemex or similar

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 19 January 2017 14:56 (nine years ago)

love my aeropress but had some chemex brewed cof over the holiday and was really impressed -- mighta been the beans tho who knows

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 19 January 2017 14:57 (nine years ago)

what's the difference between chemex and a hario v60? what's with that weird cloth

flopson, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:24 (nine years ago)

chemex is great but i don't think i'd want it as my exclusive brewer. the coffee it produces is extremely clean and bright, and sometimes i want a muddier thick brew

marcos, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:27 (nine years ago)

i've been doing french press for years but am sorely tempted by the bonavita now, it's just so damn easy.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:29 (nine years ago)

That's for sure! Exactly one switch on the thing.

I'm quite happy with it.

Evan, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:50 (nine years ago)

I don't generally brew coffee on weekday mornings because that's in conflict with my donut and coffee buying ritual but maybe I should just change it up and start buying just donuts.

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:15 (nine years ago)

yea i only brew coffee at home if i am eating breakfast at home.

marcos, Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:47 (nine years ago)

btw a coffee + croissant is the most elegant and perfect breakfast imo

marcos, Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:47 (nine years ago)

i tend to crash after the croissant rush dies off. now i eat yogurt w/ walnuts and honey and drink a cup of filter coffee every morning: RECOMMENDED

flopson, Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:50 (nine years ago)

you know how sometimes when you're in a foreign country and something about their culture strikes you as superior to your own and enviable. whenever I've been in a city in spain in the morning and seemingly everyone on their way to their office is stopping in at a cafe to drink a coffee and eat a pastry for breakfast i get that feeling

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:51 (nine years ago)

was in too much of a rush to make my french press this morning :|

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:52 (nine years ago)

Recovered a vintagey chemex out of my mom's hoarder house - still in the box new. Have been trying it out in place of my trusty french press and dang...

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 26 January 2017 22:09 (nine years ago)

I highly recommend the glass handle Chemex over the classic wooden collar, if anyone's in the market. The leather straps on the wooden collar Chemex never seem to re-tie as nicely as they are originally when you clean it.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 26 January 2017 22:14 (nine years ago)

I make Chemex coffee every day. It is the best. My rules:

Pour 450 ml water into electric kettle. Turn on kettle.
Put new filter in Chemex pot
Rinse filter in hot water from sink until it is all wet and suctiony and the Chemex pot is hot
Pour out water, making sure filter stays in place
Add 4 tablespoons / 27 g medium roast coffee ground a bit coarser than medium
Shake Chemex a bit to flatten the ground
Add orange peel and cardamom if you like
Gently pour over the grounds 100ml of the water from the kettle that stopped boiling about a minute ago
Wait for a minute.
Continue adding all the water, soaking the grounds evenly, in any number of incremental little pours during the next 2-3 minutes, making sure you don't let the grounds dry out too much in between pours
Pour into a mug and spill that thing all over your shoes
Stop at Dunkin Donuts and drink a paper cup of their bogwater.

i pretty much do the same thing but i use 42 g of fresh ground beans with 750 mL water because i like to have a more than one mug in the morning

the late great, Thursday, 26 January 2017 23:07 (nine years ago)

I do flash-iced most of the time so 500ml of water to 47g of beans with a handful of ice in the carafe and ice in the pint glass or thermos I'm drinking from, which gets me to about 750ml of water total.
