I am not sure what pareene is going for with this one, or if he's going for anything at all.

Some surprises about what a shitshow (in management style and journalistic ethics) Deadspin was long before the Hulk Hogan stuff.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Sunday, 8 January 2017 17:43 (nine years ago)
Still sort of feel bad for someone to have their life ruined by Peter Thiel but it's hard to imagine a less sympathetic subject than Daulerio.

His contribution to the roast of Craggs told me most of that, though. Gonzo gone frat.

In the first paragraph: We are on the concrete porch of an apartment he's renting in a dismal section of Singer Island, Florida. He's wearing a T-shirt, baggy basketball shorts, sweat socks to midcalf, and shower shoesโa look he describes as "homeless chic."
There's a tension not resolved regarding whether he's genuinely unaware of how repulsive he is, but there are a lot of better ways to spend your time than wondering about that.

Hey, HST was gross and terrible a lot of the time, who is to say whether the chicken or the egg came first? Certainly not Manti Te'o!

the insinuation throughout that a molestation is responsible for his actions is nagl but he legitimately seems like a damaged and unhappy person so i feel bad picking the profile a part really

The Root has been around for like 6 or 7 years, I think. It started as a Slate's black sub-site and then broke off at some point.
― duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Friday, 13 January 2017 14:50 (nine years ago)
so it was slate -> independent -> snatched up by univision -> integrated w/ex-gawker properties?
― mh ๐, Friday, 13 January 2017 17:02 (nine years ago)
pretty much, except it was owned by Slate's parent company until the Univision sale. Slate itself was sold off at an earlier point.

Takes her a little bit to get rolling to the insane shit - as someone far removed from college campuses, things like cancelling The Vagina Monologues does seem counter-productive in general... and then she starts in on "mutilation."
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 16 February 2017 00:30 (nine years ago)

Great to read about feminism from the author of http://jezebel.com/this-is-amazing-amy-pascals-cheap-crotch-intensive-bea-1698863025
― JoeStork, Thursday, 16 February 2017 00:35 (nine years ago)
it really is hilarious that her whole piece hinges on caring whether some college kids get to see the vaginas monologues
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 16 February 2017 00:43 (nine years ago)
the same group also barred a number of other plays for racist or homophobic content, the vagina monologues thing got latched onto by conservative press and the playwright's open letter thing helped it gain more ground.
a group on campus actually did do the vagina monologues in the end.
― Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 16 February 2017 00:49 (nine years ago)
again, I... don't care
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 16 February 2017 00:49 (nine years ago)
yeah it literally is the least important thing ever, sorry for mentioning.
millennial terfs are confusing to me. like i get if you're germaine greer or whatever you've been railing against trans women for decades and feel like you're this wonderful person on the side of oppressed womanhood and don't want to realize that you're actually an arsehole. but how do millennials get into this shit?
― Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 16 February 2017 00:54 (nine years ago)
I started rolling my eyes super hard when I read the word "blacklist"
like, cancelling plans to do a show one time is... not blacklisting it
did they bury copies of the vagina monologues in a pit under the library
― mh ๐, Thursday, 16 February 2017 01:20 (nine years ago)
I got to the inevitable Dolezal comparison and figured life's too short.
― JoeStork, Thursday, 16 February 2017 01:27 (nine years ago)
xp jim, vargas cooper might just be trying to break in to the large, lucrative right wing media market, which currently has a demand for people who can write with some knowledge on the goings-on of campus activists.
― Treeship, Thursday, 16 February 2017 01:40 (nine years ago)
maybe that's shitty of me to say, but i do feel like there are opportunities there for ex-gawker people.
― Treeship, Thursday, 16 February 2017 01:41 (nine years ago)
There are essential elements to being a woman; they are few, but they are profound, and they shape the way we interact with the world. To erase or deny that reality because it doesnโt include biological men is an insult to women.
Penny goes on to say that โfeminismโs focus on women can be alienating to queer people and anyone questioning the gender binary.โ
What else should feminism focus on if not women?
oh my god this bitch is crazy lol. crazy af.
― sleepingbag, Thursday, 16 February 2017 01:46 (nine years ago)
xp quite likely, probably written to provoke a pissed-off reaction and charges that the trans community 'silences' anyone who dares question their orthodoxy, even a Jezebel writer. Of course, given her connections with Jezebel, she could easily have contacted plenty of trans activists if she wanted to write a critical but balanced piece about where trans activism fits in with and deviates from the traditional feminist movement. But that's not what she wanted to do.

you're treating it like an ideology people stumble across and buy into rather than a weak, vulnerable justification for hate, and hate is eternal my dude
― qualx, Thursday, 16 February 2017 03:21 (nine years ago)
like i've spent time thinking about that too, it's like the only remnant of second-wave feminism that has this ardent following (and anti-sex work which, same thing)
spend enough time in their communities and you realize it's just plain hate, same as any right-winger
― qualx, Thursday, 16 February 2017 03:25 (nine years ago)
was so tempted to go off on a ranting tangent on facebook but held back, since every reference to the article was completely negative already
when groups who are a minority or feel subject to oppression make their needs known and institutions and society are reconfiguring boundaries to find a new norm, there will be moments that are questionable -- maybe someone well-meaning did something that wasn't actually helpful, maybe someone in the group had an ideal that needed adjustment in practice. a feedback loop and open communication is good
but this garbage article didn't speak to that at all. it's just a complete refutation of change to the perceived status quo. there are a bunch of implications that the gains made by second wave feminists will somehow be lost with no evidence
"an all-women college is having to have serious discussions" is the most bullshit thing. institutions, especially colleges, have serious discussions about how to best serve students and what accommodations are reasonable all the time. if they didn't, they'd be shitty colleges!

I'm lucky in that i haven't encountered anyone like this irl (my social group via my wife swings heavily feminist and lesbian and is totally anti-terf). although having said that i just found out that a new women's library opened up in this city and that it's for "women born as women" or some such slogan :|
