SM is a fucking resource hog. In idle--i.e. when no iPhone is connected to my library--it is choking down 18 threads at a time and adversely affecting my system.

Dandy Don Weiner, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

i just know i'm never going to use this. but still. nice idea.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

also, I think my problem is that most of my tracks on iTunes are in Apple Lossless, as opposed to crappy 128 MP3s. Those are big files to push, which is why my buffering times are insane.

Dandy Don Weiner, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

i dropped them a line anyway and mentioned the problems i'd had; i also asked about scrobbling support. apparently that'll come in a later update of the iPhone app, which would make this totally fuckin' awesome.

First song was Duran Duran 'The Reflex' so money well spent x 2163412847.

Autumn, why are you posting some Cleveland person's phone number on ILX?

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

being not american your post makes 0 sense to me

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

admit it. your telephone only dials to Cleveland.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

WhitePages now has a FREE iPhone app, it has people search as well as reverse phone, business search, save to iPhone Contacts, maps/directions, etc...

Here's the link: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=287734809&mt=8
Or just go to App Store under Reference and sort by Most Popular. Enjoy!

cozwn, Thursday, 21 August 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

hi alison

cozwn, Thursday, 21 August 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

hey jaymc, I'm about to call you ok?

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 21 August 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

2 Across is a really good crossword puzzle app where you can download puzzles past and present from the WSJ, the NYT (with subscription), the Onion, thinks.com and several other places.

The one thing not explained properly is how to enter a word. If you tap twice really fast, that brings out the typewriter. You can also also customize what is revealed, checked, and what isn't at your own leisure. There. Have fun.

Mackro, this was built by someone I know! She has seemed very excited lately about it getting featured and downloaded.

nabisco, Thursday, 21 August 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

That's "someone I know" not as in "someone who works as a programmer," but rather "a very smart person who evidently just decided to sit down and make a crossword app because she wanted one"

nabisco, Thursday, 21 August 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, she just told me after I called her, Nabisco. she's really sweet.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 21 August 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

(hat tip to jaymc for telling me her phone number over the phone)

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 21 August 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

I pretty much just checked the thread to see if you were talking about that app, so I have no idea how the calling-people joke or non-joke functions

nabisco, Friday, 22 August 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

It's a joke, and reading above, it sounds really catty, which wasn't my intention at all. The "joke" was that the new White Pages app mentioned right above would be able to reverse search phone numbers based on ILX user names. I used jaymc as an example in an attempt to keep the joke running, but it didn't pan out. So I'll just kill the joke here.

I still really enjoy 2 Across, and your friend is awesome for making it. :)

I've got 2 Across also and like it a lot. Your friend rules.

(*cough* um, cowbell plus.)

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

I'm really digging Lumen, btw. (i.e. not embarrassing app)

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

Does NNW work yet?

Also, there's a free "Scorched Earth" game now. 'Cannon' something.

kingfish, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

nice!

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

is anyone getting errors sticking new versions of apps on?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

Does NNW work yet?

Been using it solidly for the past couple of weeks.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

I have no problems with it that make it unuseable.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

A crash during the 2.02 firmware upgrade last night caused me to lose all my apps. :( But I was able to get most of them back, so hooray. Plus, 2.02 really did improve my 3G connectivity, so double hooray!

What is the NNW icon meant to represent? Looks like a pokémon.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 07:23 (seventeen years ago)

I guess it's an upside down speech bubble poking out of a cloud. And then in the bottom right corner, a tiny metoerite is landing on a notepad.

JimD, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 08:33 (seventeen years ago)

What is the NNW icon meant to represent? Looks like a pokémon.

It's a small portion of the regular NNW icon - a satellite orbiting the Earth.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 08:39 (seventeen years ago)

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

you think the earth looks like pokémon

sunny successor, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

instapaper pay-for version = less-useful rip-off

stet, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

Why bother? The free one's good enough.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

I don't get why they offer a paid version of a free app that already does everything 99% of people want.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

NNW keeps locking & crashing on me

kingfish, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 21:51 (seventeen years ago)

ya honestly i find NNW is still so buggy its useless

s1ocki, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

doesnt sync properly either... folders thing... etc etc

s1ocki, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Nothing like that here.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

gps tracker!

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

OK - you NNW freaks officially need your own thread. Aren't there other cool apps we can talk about? Anyone using BeatMaker regularly?

schwantz, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

Why bother? The free one's good enough.
I wanted the remember-where-you-are thingy, and I liked it enough that I want to pay the dude for it. All the reviews of other apps going "Ya totly awesum app but SHLD BE FREE one star" piss me off, but saying that, £6 is steep

stet, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

remember-where-you-are? What's that do?

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

New version of Frotz will extract .dat files from .zip files.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 28 August 2008 01:21 (seventeen years ago)

It keeps your place in a long document, which is v. handy

stet, Thursday, 28 August 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

How does it integrate with things that use documents?

I'd check the app before asking but I don't know what it's called.
