It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

i've seen tons of episodes on netflix and plane rides and stuff but i've never really watched the show in order, so i started it from episode 1 earlier this week. the first season...is not that great? no one really seems into their groove yet, and the characters aren't as distinct as they are later on. charlie in particular seems a lot more alert and normal than the foggy version of himself i'm used to in later episodes

charlie knows how to read in Season 1!

just about every american sitcom is way more defined in season 2 than it is in season 1.

I remember watching s1 when it aired and not being really into it - but around the time DeVito joins the cast they really hit their stride

yeah i already love the show i've seen probably half the episodes here or there, it's just interesting seeing how different it seems

as lagoon says upthread tho they do establish some things pretty early -- dee's acting classes, dennis and the "tranny" (and his general repressed homosexuality), charlie and the waitress, etc

yeah a LOT of the recurring characters are there from the start. Isn't there one episode that introduces like three main recurring character, incl the waitress...?

oh I see I already covered this:

I recently re-watched this show from the beginning and I had forgotten how much gets established early on. Like, in the 4th episode they introduce the waitress + Charlie's infatuation w her, Artemis, Dee's acting ambitions, and Mac's infatuation with Carmen the transexual. Almost everything the show calls back to (including most of the recurring characters) is set up by the end of the 2nd season.

lol yes that was the post i was referring to i thought i remembered it being lagoon

s1 is pretty bad, i agree that devito coming in is where it improves. not necessarily bc of him but it's a good dividing line.

i love their high-concept episodes, especially the one where the bar tries to win an award and the (mostly) one-take episode about fooling the health inspector

dennis's natural leadership abilities and general sociopathic tendencies haven't really shown up too much yet either. sweet dee seems like the most fully fleshed out so far

dee is nicer/more reasonable at the beginning of the show, iirc kaitlyn olsen went to the dudes eventually and told them she didn't want to be the nagging woman character any more so they started making her more pathetic and weird

"the gang finds a dead guy" is great LOL watching now

i don't remember dennis smoking either

they just made the pilot themselves for like $30, p cool

love how they stuck w that low budge feel throughout

i just rescreened a some eps yesterday and dee gives birth and the christmas ep back to back is some serious genius

ive prob watched the christmas ep 4 times and there are two scenes that make me lol irl srsly hard every time

cuttys soliloquy abt the jorts in dee gives birth is transcendent too

Xmas special is so unbelievably great. the stop-motion animation segment is next level. the pantsless dwarf. Mac's family stealing presents.

I believe this is truly the best show of our time fwiw

so many great parts but frank sewn into the couch and charlie and the mall santa are what send me over the edge
