Bought tickets for Friday night opening at the Cinerama Dome. Keeping fingers crossed...

Yeah, I'm not a Star Trek person either, but this looks really good based on the trailers and the interviews I've read. Definitely looks better than that ridiculous Wolverine movie.

I can't wait for the F Troop "origin story" movie
― Dr Morbius, Sunday, 3 May 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)
Saw it yesterday morning. Never seen the original series but this was lots of fun, and a friend of mine who hates sci-fi admitted to being entertained. Really solid casting - Quinto especially stands out.
― Simon H., Sunday, 3 May 2009 17:02 (seventeen years ago)
Oh I lost this thread and posted my review on another. I saw it yesterday and it totally rules. I'll be seeing it again when it comes out.
I'm not an obsessive Trekker, but I think I got 90+% of the nerd references. Definitely satisfying for newbs and nerds alike. Simply a great blockbuster pop/SF film.

In a JJ Abrams project? U MAD
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 May 2009 03:50 (seventeen years ago)
i have seen nothin of JJ Abrams' shit, including the philosophy-heavy Armageddon
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 4 May 2009 03:55 (seventeen years ago)
He tends to flex that muscle more in serial television than in movies, but I suspect Star Trek is the perfect opportunity to cross over.

Armageddon is still one of the worst films I've ever seen.
― The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Monday, 4 May 2009 14:29 (seventeen years ago)
Judging solely by the trailer I saw this weekend, G.I. Joe looks like it will easily be the worse movie ever made. Seriously, the thing looks like such a mess.

How can you consider a movie that's opening in thousands of theaters with a huge ad campaign anything but POP?
Allow me to spell this out for you: Pop is an abbreviation for Popular. And this movie will be very popular because it satisfies.
It's not going to get nominated for any awards (except perhaps for special effects, which it deserves), but it is one of the most EXCITING films I've seen in quite a while. Thrilling, hilarious, and yes, philosophical.
― Nate Carson, Monday, 4 May 2009 21:33 (seventeen years ago)
What kind of vibe does it strike, in comparison to the different series? i.e. you had this kennedy-era progressive optimism mixed with New Wave Sci-Fi, vs a more staid and contemplative tech-heavy version?
― kingfish, Monday, 4 May 2009 21:45 (seventeen years ago)
This movie had its moments but overall was a disappointment--note that I did not go in with very high hopes, though.
Best moments: little boy Spock, Pike in a wheelchair.
Worst moments: sword fighting Sulu, juvenile delinquent Kirk.
― ian, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 02:04 (seventeen years ago)
It has the vibe of an action movie btw, and there are some poorly explained plot points you just kind of have to accept. Red matter, for instance. I know it's a sci-fi movie, suspend one disbelief etc, but at least TRY, people, you have a movie that's over two hours, stop filling it with useless "cute" crap.
― ian, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 02:06 (seventeen years ago)
I agree that Red Matter wasn't developed. We had to just "accept" that it was science from the far future. But that sorta just goes with the territory, right?
As for the politics, there's certainly a lot of interracial/special issues that are addressed.
I don't know why people can't enjoy 200 Million dollar movies for what they are. At least decent ones. I mean, fuck a Titanic.
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 02:30 (seventeen years ago)
aw man, i didn't say i ENJOYED it, just that it was kind of like jj had this idea for a movie then shoehorned it into the star trek universe, maybe? all the time-travel shit felt kind of forced, and some of the characters were changed for no good reason. mostly the uhura/spock romance was kind of hard to accept, given spock's general demeanor. asshole kirk was decent, but bones was probably the best of the central cast.
― ian, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 02:33 (seventeen years ago)
wait i mean.. i DID enjoy it, but i also thought it did not "feel" like a star trek movie to me, rather like an awkwardly written fanfic.
― ian, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:00 (seventeen years ago)

^post-Lucas generation speaks. You know how I could tell it was a $200 M movie? I MUST AVENGE MY DEAD PARENT x 2
I will embargo the particulars of my opinion til later, but it's amazing how getting rid of one planet paves the way for an an all-war series going forward.
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:03 (seventeen years ago)
I miss the innocence of Titanic at this point (which had no dialogue more terrible than the opener here -- "Tiberius? No way!")
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:06 (seventeen years ago)
i.e. you had this kennedy-era progressive optimism
Kirk was very often LBJ in Vietnam in the TV series, continually wiped his ass with the Prime Directive.
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:09 (seventeen years ago)
All of these was much more U&K and better addressed in the original series.
― ian, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:16 (seventeen years ago)
I think the point was for it not to feel so wooden and cultish as the original films. It's supposed to be a fresh start. Objectively, there are some huge improvements in certain areas. Of course, other things are lost along the way.
Also, I totally agree that McCoy is the best performance. Spock/Urhura was unexpected, but kind of intriguing too.
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 09:56 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, the opening scene was awful.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 5 May 2009 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

It frequently feels mechanical, and even more a celebration of USA-style militarism than in the past.
