Subway and bus riders who buy unlimited-ride MetroCards before fares go up on May 31 must begin using them by June 8 to receive the full present value of the cards, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Thursday.

The cut-off date is intended in part to prevent hoarding. Given the deadline, stocking up on the cards before May 31 in the hopes of using them weeks and months later will not be a fruitful strategy.

On May 31, the price of a basic per-per-ride fare will rise to $2.50 from $2. The costs of the unlimited-ride cards, which most riders use, will also increase: to $9.50 from $7.50 for the one-day fun pass, to $31 from $25 for the seven-day card, to $59 from $47 for the 14-day and to $103 from $81 for the 30-day card.

Unlimited-ride cards bought at current prices will only be valid until the following dates: June 8 for the one-day fun pass, June 14 for the seven-day card, June 21 for the 14-day card and July 7 for the 30-day card.

time to get in biking shape.

ian, Saturday, 2 May 2009 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

Dear rider,

Congratulations! Last night, your phone calls, letters and emails were heard and acted upon by our elected officials in Albany. Because of you, millions of straphangers can breath a sigh of relief knowing their bus, train or commuter line will still be there on June 1st.

While not perfect, the new legislation halves the fare and toll increases, derails the service cuts and provides enough revenue for two years of capital repairs and rebuilding. Rest assured we will continue to fight for safe, decent and affordable transit, but today we can all celebrate a big victory for our 9 million neighbors.

What does the bill include?

A single-ride MetroCard will be $2.25, not $2.50;

The pay-per-ride discount will be 20% when you buy $7.50 or more;

A 30-day MetroCard will be $89, not $103;

Fare increases on LIRR and MetroNorth will be about 10% as opposed to the 25%-70% hikes in the MTA "Doomsday" budget;
The Doomsday service cuts will not happen, maintaining current levels of service; and
two years worth of capital funding will ensure the MTA has the basic resources needed to continue to rebuild the system.

With our sincerest thanks and gratitude,
Gene, Cate and Jason

subway etiquette:

• Absolutely no grooming on the subway. High on the disgust-factor list are:
o Nail clipping (there’s even one report of TOE-nail clipping)
o Nail polishing
o Make-up application
o Teeth flossing

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 18 June 2009 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

This morning a really big, very tall kid right in front of me entered the double doors of the 5 train and stopped there, with me and a lot of other people stuck behind him. He stood there despite the fact that I bumped right into him and no one could get by, up until he saw a seat he could get to. Then he decided he didn't want to lean against the doors anymore, so he moved in and took the seat.

Actually ended up sitting NEXT to the guy a few stops later, and he fell asleep and kept leaning over on me and the person on his other side.

I remember thinking, "Would it be possible to inflict enough physical suffering on this person to make them understand how offensive their rudeness is? Too bad there's no handy scale for computing level of agony deserved for degree of fucking off every other person in your general vicinity (possibly depending on how many people that is)."

M.T.A. Sells Naming Rights to Subway Station

mookieproof, Friday, 26 June 2009 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

And if a company can pay to get its name on any station, a New Yorker might wonder what's next: Coca-Cola Presents 59th Street-Columbus Circle?

I don't care how much money they get from those bastards whose stadium is never gonna get built -- no one is going to call it Barclays Station.

there's a lazy collocation in every paragraph of that article; "WHAT IS NEXT, the [CONGLOMERATE]-[MIDTOWN STATION]?"

the heart is a lonely hamster (schlump), Friday, 26 June 2009 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

"what's next" is the worst set-up to anything.

There was a CMJ article after I left that called out Otto Von Schirach's "Tea-Bagging The Dead" as a wacky song title. And it said, "What's next, Coffee-Grinding The Living?"

And it's like, you want to yell, THAT'S NOT HOW JOKES WORK.

anyone take the M60 to LaGuardia? is it horrible?

carne asada, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

No! I'm fine with it. It's a bit long, maybe, cos it makes a lot of stops on the way -- much faster at like 10pm than on a sunny summer afternoon. But the subway at 2nd Ave that it connects to even has an elevator to get to the mezz, so you don't have to hoof your bags as much.

The Lion's Mane Jellyfish, pictured here with its only natural predator (Laurel), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

I live right off the 2/3/4/5, tho, so it's an especially easy trip for me. WAAAAAAAAAYYYY easier than trying to get the elevated train in Queens and carrying bags ALL the way up there.

The Lion's Mane Jellyfish, pictured here with its only natural predator (Laurel), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

i have taken it from the astoria blvd subway stop. it's a little frustrating, but not too bad. and if it is packed or something, there should be plenty of cab options from there at a reasonable-ish price.

know ahead of time which terminal you need, though, because they're not that good about announcements and it can be tough to see around everyone's baggage.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

i'll be getting it off the 4 so that doesn't sound too bad. the price is definitely right.

carne asada, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

The M60 is actually pretty great. It runs fairly often, and it's not unduly crowded. I usually take it toward Manhattan, not toward the airport, because I live so close it's easier to cab it. And you get a free tour of Astoria.

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

I did recently sit on it in front of a bunch of twits who loudly savaged my neighborhood as being "too skeevy". You know, for the nice white people with money.

my wife got practically knocked down by a middle-aged woman angrily barging her way off a crowded bus. i hate people who wait until the last second, suddenly realize it's their stop and then feel justified in just shoving the hell out of anyone in their way.

Garnet Memes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 18 September 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

had the most uncomfortable subway experience in a while the other week. just another crazy guy, but this one was really angry. he started out by ripping apart a loaf of bread he was carrying and throwing it piece by piece against the door opposite him. the car was crowded and people just kind of edged away as much as possible from him and the growing pile of bread bits. he was muttering at first but got louder and louder until he was almost yelling each time he threw the bread, "motherfucker i TOLD you, you wanna fuck with ME?" etc etc. then he jumped up and slammed his hand really hard against the door and kind of looked around like he was daring anyone to say anything. the whole car studiously avoided eye contact with him, and he basically shoved his way down the car to the next door and got off at the next stop. then a few people kicked all the bread off the floor and out the door. but it was pretty tense for a few minutes. there were a good number of good-sized guys in the car, and i'm pretty sure that if the guy had actually tipped over into violence, he could've been taken down pretty easily. and you could see everyone sort of bracing for that possibility. but the crazy guy seemed to know that too -- he was pushing right up to the edge, but he didn't really want to get his ass kicked.

anyway, i hate that shit.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Friday, 18 September 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

(oh, and it wasn't just bread. it started as bread and then became bits of turkey or whatever lunch meat he had with him.)

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Friday, 18 September 2009 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

Seem to recall that kind of stuff happening on a daily basis back in the 70s and early 80s.
