lol gr8080

Οὖτις, Friday, 14 October 2016 16:59 (eight years ago) link

Thanks for elaborating gr8080! I think y'all did really well on the podcast. (Good to hear they thoroughly researched it w/ fact checks and follow up interviews too)

It is strange, seeing something so quintessentially ilx outside of the board and in the ~real world~ like this. I would probably have had the same epiphany gr8080 had when he was contacted by the show, or so I'd like to believe. That, mixed with quite some embarrassment. Which is not a bad thing. Rather a mirror being held up that could not possibly have happened within the ilx universe.

Thomas being ok and well is teh raddest.

Just to give everybody a heads up here, we have a Pending Registration from a user with a Display Name of Waynescrew610 with a lowercase C. It should be noted that we already have a user WaynesCrew610 with a capital C. I don't know if they forgot their password or if this is the same user or what. I'm going to go ahead and let them in though.

Waynescrew1 through Waynescrew609 sadly already taken

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Friday, 14 October 2016 17:18 (eight years ago) link

Not me. The thread wasn't a hoax. The spirit of 'so not gonna happen' wasn't a hoax.

listening to this podcast, damn, it's an incredible story!

i was always kind of defensive of the guy in the photo. at first i thought people were really projecting onto the photo and being a bit mean, like talking behind someone's back. this podcast really gets across that it's more about the curiosity, piecing together this mystery, and these layers of hoaxes and false stories all intersecting and colliding. fascinating stuff!

did they ever find out who took the photo? that may be one of the most important keys to the mystery of this moment.

there was at least a 4th person present -- girl on the right is looking at them (?) -- who is this?

the luna story would make a good pod. it involves deception, money laundering, death and cheating.

the tightening is plateauing (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 14 October 2016 19:53 (eight years ago) link

No no. I agree that this is extremely fascinating and interesting. I was intrigued when I heard the podcast. I was just wondering if anyone was angry about the death hoax, since sometimes that's how people react. It's difficult to gauge an internet community, and I just didn't know how y'all felt about it.

whtkrkid, Friday, 14 October 2016 20:11 (eight years ago) link

It's not like it was a cancer-blogging-child death hoax

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Friday, 14 October 2016 20:12 (eight years ago) link

agree w all here that the luna saga (which I was totally unaware of at the time) is a way more dramatic story

Οὖτις, Friday, 14 October 2016 20:19 (eight years ago) link

i only know the vague outline but it does seem pretty dramatic. that nyer story about the catfishing new orleans phone operator reminded me of it.

The times they are a changing, perhaps (map), Friday, 14 October 2016 20:24 (eight years ago) link

Personally I'm not at all angry about the hoax. As people said above, the hoax part is only from, like, last year I think? And although I was sad about the possibility of it being true I don't think anyone was personally affected by it. We've had active members of the board die, so an object of a protomeme is not going to have the same impact. And it's not like this whole messageboard is about the picture and we thought about it every day - this place is huge and we have many other petty things to talk about. If you're new you probably haven't had a chance to participate in polling every single fucking list from every single fucking music magazine yet. (NB even though I think this is ridiculous I generally like the ILM polls and certainly don't begrudge anyone polling anything they want to, unlike some of the hardline grouches here.)

mookieproof, Saturday, 15 October 2016 04:01 (eight years ago) link

Finished listening a few minutes ago, and now I've been going back over the thread. I was still strictly ILM-only in 2006, so I missed the original frenzy, but I got up to speed later on.

I agree with someone upthread who said you don't have to know anything about the thread or even ILX to think that was a remarkable podcast episode. I applaud the considerable amount of work they put into it.
