um: so not gonna happen

PappaWheelie V, Thursday, 13 October 2016 22:15 (nine years ago)

oh hell, that's confusing, point is sleeve posted the link above: SANTORUM.JPG

PappaWheelie V, Thursday, 13 October 2016 22:16 (nine years ago)

Haha. I think about santorum.jpg dialy, especially because it deserves a Trump16 update, but never in regards to Wayne/this thread. Emily thoroughly otm though, on all accounts.

Eldanos, those of us who listened already were trying not to give spoilers! Jeez.

emil.y, Friday, 14 October 2016 01:42 (nine years ago)

I listened to this because I wanted to hear an ILX story, but I can't believe there's a podcast that's basically "Let me describe a picture I saw on the internet and then track down and annoy the people in it"

xxp no don't you see it's v aesthetic to make a thread about how someone looks kinda like a loser and find out where they live and work and harrass them to talk about it via someone rehearsing for a career as an important "i talk like this, with this cadence" person

yolo mostly (sleepingbag), Friday, 14 October 2016 02:08 (nine years ago)

Who are you sneering at?

Wozniak on Kimye's Baby (jaymc), Friday, 14 October 2016 02:12 (nine years ago)

all of you? i mean i know classic ilx or whatever but you don't find any of the language, stalking or making contact that happened itt/'podcast' creepy or distasteful?

yolo mostly (sleepingbag), Friday, 14 October 2016 02:19 (nine years ago)

Yes, and I expressed that to PJ when he interviewed me.

Wozniak on Kimye's Baby (jaymc), Friday, 14 October 2016 02:24 (nine years ago)

i must have fast forwarded through that part, apologies. don't doxx me bro. <3

yolo mostly (sleepingbag), Friday, 14 October 2016 02:28 (nine years ago)

Yeah, the podcast guys made it pretty clear that the whole thing was weird and creepy. But then they got sucked in too.

emil.y, Friday, 14 October 2016 02:29 (nine years ago)

...& took the weird + creepy thing further, and published it on a monetized platform... but it's all cool, no harm really and nothing any of us wouldn't mind being on the other end of, right?

yolo mostly (sleepingbag), Friday, 14 October 2016 02:38 (nine years ago)

Kinda creepy knowing there's all these people out there reading this thread now, looking in.

yeah see previous posts and give jaymc credit

when they said something about "john" I only very briefly thought "which... who?" until the voice clip rolled and I knew who it was

mh 😏, Friday, 14 October 2016 03:54 (nine years ago)

also what is up with s1ocki getting credit in the regards at the end but no other acknowledgment?

did s1ocki point these guys to it or gr80, because they both definitely had some role

mh 😏, Friday, 14 October 2016 03:55 (nine years ago)

Kinda creepy knowing there's all these people out there reading this thread now, looking in.

that's true of pretty much every thread to varying degrees, though

life is kinda creepy in general

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Friday, 14 October 2016 03:58 (nine years ago)

did s1ocki point these guys to it or gr80, because they both definitely had some role

iirc s1ocki pointed them to it and told them they should talk to gr8080. gr8080 then looped in me and roxy.

Fuck I really enjoyed the shit out of this podcast and hearing gr80 and jaymc was a fucking delight. Only complaint is that it follows the This American Life format/aesthetic to a t and yo I guess that this is growing up. I love you guys I love ilx.

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 14 October 2016 07:25 (nine years ago)

^ same :)

a curious sensation hearing these young podcast voices covering this thread (and calling us 'kids'!)

also..... of course the RIP pic was real. v surprising the podcasters didn't think it was! but it's great that it spurred them to go to the bar

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 14 October 2016 07:37 (nine years ago)

lol just got to the next twist... :o

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 14 October 2016 07:40 (nine years ago)

Maybe the likes of Catfish have made me overly cynical, but the narrative with the twist seems a little too neat to be entirely genuine.

AlanSmithee, Friday, 14 October 2016 07:53 (nine years ago)

Wish they'd done it as a written article rather than a podcast. Their voices really started to grate on me after a while. Doesn't anyone write articles anymore?

heaven parker (anagram), Friday, 14 October 2016 08:12 (nine years ago)

Dumb complaint they do a podcast cmon

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 14 October 2016 08:26 (nine years ago)

Loved the podcast! The twists! The turns! It's now like just one step away from someone writing their dissertation and becoming a Doctor of Sociology about this thread.

Completely floored! I subscribe to Reply All and when the episode came on I had no idea that the kids of ILX figured in.

(SPOILERS FOR THE PODCAST FOLLOW, BE WARNED!)

To be honest, I found the whole justfication for faking "Wayne's" death to be a bit suspect. I mean, according to the podcast guy, his friends did it so ILX would stop cyber-harassing him or something... But if you actually look at this thread, the discussion around "Wayne" mostly dies around 2007, and after that most of the thread revivals are about totally different pics, with only a handful of "Wayne" posts (mostly by Gr8080) in the next 8 years.

And then "WayneCrew610" posts the news about his "death" in January 2015, even though no one in this thread has even mentioned him since 2013. So unless there was some stalking going on outside the thread (which I guess is possible), the idea that they'd nobly fake their friend's death to protect him from harassment, even though it had actually stopped years ago, seems suspect.

And then you have Jaymc saying he was interviewed for the podcast in February 2015 (i.e. soon after the first post by "WaynesCrew"), and someone else says it has been on the works for "years". So maybe "WaynesCrew" only came to post here only after the podcast folks had contacted them... Which means that they created the story for their podcast themselves.

were they trying to stop jerks from stalking their friend or were they just trying to fuck with the jerks who stalked their friend

Har-@-Iago (wins), Friday, 14 October 2016 09:50 (nine years ago)

To be clear, I didn't mean to imply the podcast folks actually told "Wayne's" friends to fake his death, just that maybe the friends decided to do that after the some weird people had tried to contact them so that they could find "Wayne" and interview him.

Nice try... Tuomas Loftus! (dun dun DUNNNN!)

StanM, Friday, 14 October 2016 09:53 (nine years ago)

can't wait to read this thread and listen to the podcast with a nice glass of wine.

arron banksy (cajunsunday), Friday, 14 October 2016 09:54 (nine years ago)

were they trying to stop jerks from stalking their friend or were they just trying to fuck with the jerks who stalked their friend

The podcast implies it's the former, but of course it could actually be the latter, and they just tried to come up with justification that'd make them look better.

Still, the whole idea that a bunch of people would lie about their friend having died, even in real life face-to-face conversation, just because some cyber-stalking happened many years ago, seems pretty weird. I can't imagine anyone I know doing that.
