I love the mentality of musicals, at leat the way Lin-Manuel presents it. Going out there eight times a week and working your butt off to entertain, because that's what you do. Going out before the show and doing something for the people waiting. Quite simply doing everything you can to please.
idk seems pretty conservative at its core

I don't see how that's different from any other form of entertainment tbh, they all require tons and tons of work to do well

The one musical I stan for unreservedly is "Annie." That could be down to childhood nostalgia, but if I'm near a TV and it's on I will set everything aside to re-watch it.

it took stalinesque political skill to avoid being assigned any job on the musical of 9 to 5 my theater's doing this fall, but as documented in the mary poppins thread i did get happily caught up in that one last year. no idea what the 9 to 5 musical's like but suspect it won't produce quite as many delighted, weeping children.― florence foster wallace (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, September 28, 2016 2:43 PM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

I don't give a shit about Hamilton but he was good. Really weird how different he looks without that stache though.
Am I hallucinating or did 21 Pilots do a lame, 1970s sounding white reggae song?

Their songs are usually poetry-based (written by Joseph and Dun);[61] Joseph has stated that when poetry is too long, he needs to start rapping to fit the lyrics in.

having never seen nor heard hamilton the fact that the songs were rewrites from that didn't resonate with me but it was still really good.
― akm, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 13:49 (seven years ago) link
His 'never gon be president now' is from when Hamilton's scandalous Reynolds pamphlet was published, detailing his extramarital affair. It was a pretty perfect moment.

thought this was a really woeful episode. and for a broadway star miranda was surprisingly poor in the sketches - usually find that people with that musical theatre background are well suited for cameo appearances in comedy but I found him surprisingly poor. less said about the broadway rapping elements the better as far as I'm concerned.
but the main problem with this episode: the writing was garbage. even the trump/clinton wasn't all that great and with that cast and the week's events that should really be a slam dunk.
― ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 19:13 (seven years ago) link
the writing on this show has been garbage since the new cast came in. which is too bad, cuz I like the new cast a lot! but it seems like they never have anything to work with
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link
yeah i like a lot of the cast and sometimes they make it worth watching, unfortunately the sketch's are often so poor there's no saving them.

I don't think Lin-Manuel considers himself a particularly good rapper, when he free style battled on Fallon against Black Thought his response was 'why am I here?' He is a pretty good writer, though, and his monologue had some great lines. On the election
The way these grand-standing candidates be talkin’They’re just a tweet away from facing off in WeehawkenThey keep brawlin’, D and RNC keep fallin’I like it better when it’s Kate McKinnon v. Baldwin
That's good writing to me? It seemed to me the show didn't know where to go with him, though.

The lampooning of the second debate had a really calming effect on me. It was so awful and cruel, to see it lampooned seemed relaxing.

thought this was a pretty awful episode again but much better than the miranda episode. nadir for me was the robot sketch, which was just excruciating. chonk definitely the highlight of the show, and weekend update wasn't too bad - not a huge fan of jost and che in general.
why do i keep watching this show? haha.

thehamster sketch reminded me of early SNL; where it wasn't 'funny' so much as, well, here's a concept: what if who's afraid of virgina woolfe was played by hamsters? Ok, let's build a whole bunch of props and a set to support this dumb idea.
― akm, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 02:23 (seven years ago) link

The sink was pretty good as well. And the short film - not so much the sketch, though Vanessa Bayer was good, but the short film itself. This season has been pretty weird at times. Shame about the live sketches, they're mostly rubbish, but a lot of good stuff around the margins.
