Facebook sucks. google seems unavoidable to me but i guess if you were keen on it you could find ways to get around using any of its features. how do you, like, look up directions, shakey?

there are a ton of different map/search engines/whatever. acting like Google is the only one is sad.

I'm not interested in having all of my various doings linked to a single Google account, I will never do it.

Yeah I use Google search rarely (DuckDuckGo mostly) and Google anything else never (other than at work, on my work account). My old gmail is still accruing marketing email that I check on every six months or so.

the only Google thing I willingly did was set up a youtube account for my band's videos and I even that I don't like doing/only did out of obligation

I do not "netflix and chill" as I prefer to use platforms unencumbered by digital rights management

xp yeah that's my issue, the way it hooks up your gmail, your youtube, even non google-based email accounts, drive, calendar etc. I'm starting to disentangle myself from all of it although it's tough bc of the convenience.

they're insanely clumsy at cross-platform aggregation and half the shit, even things they bought long ago like youtube, have different content policies

most of what you're getting is one sign-in to a bunch of sites, which is pretty ok

(enable two factor authentication, though, in case there's some sort of yahoo-style idiocy)

kind of hoping google buys twitter that way a lot of users jump ship because of not wanting to give google too much of their info

plus google has had many failed projects and i'm hoping this track record will help drive twitter down

OSM is a good group but I follow a handful of people connected to the project and they're really trying to position their efforts as far as getting people to volunteer to update things, block-by-block. They're really in the phase between being an enthusiast tool for data projects and being an enterprise-grade map provider for things like personal navigation

what i'm saying is flopson makes it sound like it's almost impossible to not use google maps' data set

there is osm for the hardcore users and apple maps uses tomtom's data

so there are a few main data sets that can be used and are being used

oh yeah it's definitely possible, I know a few companies use bing maps
(hard to type that and not laugh)
they apparently do have better maps in some rural areas and their licensing terms are better for some organizations

if you're paranoid going to another site is possible. just seems weird when googlemaps is already on my address bar, like i just have to type in an address

but.. if you set your default search engine to a difference site then you type in the address and get a different map service, lol

like even Chrome, a Google product, lets you select other search engines as default

I'm used to changing because of whatever iOS version defaulted to some wack search by default. Did they go to bing when bing was bad? I forget.

The iOS default changed to Bing, I think, but at the same time they added DuckDuckGo as an option.
