just unfollowed all the CHAPOTRAPHOUSE dudes. I figure their funny non-podcast promotional tweets will still get retweeted into my feed

why?
― flopson, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:18 (nine years ago)
because Google can eat a dick and I don't use their shitty services...? That goes for Facebook too.
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:22 (nine years ago)
it might be a harbinger of it turning into complete shit but tbh the end-times days of services are usually really entertaining

― flopson, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:24 (nine years ago)
google and facebook have some pretty good things imo
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:25 (nine years ago)
mainly because google is terrible about privacy and anonymity
― the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:30 (nine years ago)
I have no need for either
xp
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:35 (nine years ago)
Facebook sucks. google seems unavoidable to me but i guess if you were keen on it you could find ways to get around using any of its features. how do you, like, look up directions, shakey?

Google is already indexing all your tweets and they're available in search so
― Cumstaun (Phil D.), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:53 (nine years ago)
yeah but Google links your accounts on various platforms
― the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:55 (nine years ago)
there are a ton of different map/search engines/whatever. acting like Google is the only one is sad.
I'm not interested in having all of my various doings linked to a single Google account, I will never do it.
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:56 (nine years ago)
Yeah I use Google search rarely (DuckDuckGo mostly) and Google anything else never (other than at work, on my work account). My old gmail is still accruing marketing email that I check on every six months or so.

the only Google thing I willingly did was set up a youtube account for my band's videos and I even that I don't like doing/only did out of obligation
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:57 (nine years ago)
I do not "netflix and chill" as I prefer to use platforms unencumbered by digital rights management
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:57 (nine years ago)
xp yeah that's my issue, the way it hooks up your gmail, your youtube, even non google-based email accounts, drive, calendar etc. I'm starting to disentangle myself from all of it although it's tough bc of the convenience.
― the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:58 (nine years ago)
they're insanely clumsy at cross-platform aggregation and half the shit, even things they bought long ago like youtube, have different content policies
most of what you're getting is one sign-in to a bunch of sites, which is pretty ok
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:03 (nine years ago)
(enable two factor authentication, though, in case there's some sort of yahoo-style idiocy)

openstreetmap dudes
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenStreetMap
kind of hoping google buys twitter that way a lot of users jump ship because of not wanting to give google too much of their info
plus google has had many failed projects and i'm hoping this track record will help drive twitter down
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:05 (nine years ago)
OSM is a good group but I follow a handful of people connected to the project and they're really trying to position their efforts as far as getting people to volunteer to update things, block-by-block. They're really in the phase between being an enthusiast tool for data projects and being an enterprise-grade map provider for things like personal navigation
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:08 (nine years ago)
what i'm saying is flopson makes it sound like it's almost impossible to not use google maps' data set
there is osm for the hardcore users and apple maps uses tomtom's data
so there are a few main data sets that can be used and are being used
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:18 (nine years ago)
oh yeah it's definitely possible, I know a few companies use bing maps(hard to type that and not laugh)they apparently do have better maps in some rural areas and their licensing terms are better for some organizations
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:21 (nine years ago)
if you're paranoid going to another site is possible. just seems weird when googlemaps is already on my address bar, like i just have to type in an address
― flopson, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:22 (nine years ago)
but.. if you set your default search engine to a difference site then you type in the address and get a different map service, lol
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:23 (nine years ago)
like even Chrome, a Google product, lets you select other search engines as default
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:24 (nine years ago)
heh. i guess i'm just comfy in default everything and never thought to change. it's nice :)
― flopson, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:27 (nine years ago)
that's what they want you to think
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:30 (nine years ago)
you're their ideal product!
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:31 (nine years ago)
I'm used to changing because of whatever iOS version defaulted to some wack search by default. Did they go to bing when bing was bad? I forget.
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:31 (nine years ago)
The iOS default changed to Bing, I think, but at the same time they added DuckDuckGo as an option.
― slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:34 (nine years ago)
if you go to DDG in Minnesota is the mascot a grey duck instead of a goose?
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:36 (nine years ago)
ya i think it is bing
i use dolphin and i think it defaults to google
starting to use cesium instead of apple's music app too
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:38 (nine years ago)
The tortoise and the hare but instead it's you circling the same three blocks for eternity shrieking at Bing maps on your phone while i, who used googlemaps from my address line, cruise to the destination with time to spare. Then google sells my information for .0000001¢
― flopson, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 23:30 (nine years ago)
so you're typing it into the address line on your laptop and then printing it or something or are you on a phone too? need full picture here
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 23:40 (nine years ago)
Do you take a photo of your address bar
― slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 23:47 (nine years ago)
a work colleague recently told us about how he took screenshots of articles and emailed them to his phone so he'd have something to read on the subway home. pocket is .0000001¢ poorer

if u look at how theyve handled instagram theres good reason to think theyd keep them separate, which is what they shd do, under this wholly made up scenario
