My current hypothesis is that the phone hardware including EarPods is all a profitable R&D operation for chip design for the next platform. Every new thing they do involves new modules on the A-series or a new standalone chip in a new and more miniature and power-efficient package. Apple will make some people mad with the no headphone jack but they'll make another few tens of billions of dollars when the chip work all pays off.

I'm on the fence personally. I can totally imagine though that in the next few years plenty of people, especially younger folks, will be fine with abandoning the analog jack, so I'm not exactly gonna call RIP Apple on this one. And I doubt it hurts them that much if they don't sell a ton of Airpods.

Also as much as I hate the Apple watch I feel like tons of runner assholes are gonna want one.

Batteries are fundamentally hard and the gains in battery life at any given size are gonna be mostly about squeezing more power efficiency out of the cores.

the worst thing about the iphone is the airpods' 5 hour battery life

imagine having to use them on a plane. you have to account for actually getting to the airport and waiting to get on the plane, etc, that will probably leave you with 50% battery left. i don't think many people will jump on a plane with freshly charged batteries or new ones

I'm not going to spend that much on headphones, but it's worth saying that plenty of people do. There are Beats buds around that price.

hi as someone who has been using Bluetooth to stream music to my hearing aids for several years, there are many times I've just taken them out and put in regular headphones solely for this reason

also will that lightning adapter work w/ my damn headphone remote buttons (volume up/volume down/play-pause) bcz it BETTER, that's all I can say!!!!

big xp and no one cares but I annotate a lot of PDFs because I'm a prof and a journal editor and so I get sent a lot of PDFs that need my comments. and I don't like reading PDFs on a landscape screen at a desk, and don't like annotating with a keyboard

in ~2 years time i will get remote earbuds but they will be the kind with a wire between the two buds
