Tim Conway definitely a contender for the title of actor whose caricature has graced the highest number of busy/claustrophobic movie posters from the 70s and 80s

I made a Letterboxd list of everything itt (minus broken images) because why not?

Incredibly helpful - I had that scouting poster last night and thought it likely had already been posted here. But I wasn't going to open up 550 poster images to make sure.

http://www.impawards.com/designers/drew_struzan.html

it's amazing seeing how struzan has worked on everything from the highest profile work (spielberg, lucas) to the lowest (weekend warriors) and the unexpected (shirley valentine, name of the rose).

Thanks. Anyone who plays around with the site for a minute has probably figured this out already, but there is an option to list the titles alphabetically, which should make finding out if a title has already been mentioned even easier.

Posted, but still a classic. Movie is worth watching iirc.

D'oh! Obviously I should've checked my Letterboxd list closer.

I do like that it combines two key 70s styles, though--the busy, claustrophobic etc and the squares highlighting each member of the "all star cast."

Was going to say, I loved that movie as a kid. Wouldn't mind seeing it again, tbh.

lol @ the title "Skateboard"

I cringe at the idea that I once had a Kevin Smith poster on my wall, but I did, in fact, have this Mallrats poster on my wall as a student in the late 90s

if Drew Struzan is eligible for this thread it's going to get pretty crowded

Shakey δσς (sic), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 12:42 (nine years ago)

Never looked up Struzan before - wow, what a portfolio. I think a few of his have shown up here before (e.g. Cannonball Run) but I don't think most of them really fit the thread premise so no worries there.

"Skateboard" is a great find - so clearly in the genre but an aesthetic we haven't really seen much of.

If I was Allen Garfield I'd be pretty pissy about that caricature.

Interesting, I'd never heard of that movie before... Is it the first fictional story to use Stephen Knight's "the prostitutes were killed to cover up a royal scandal" theory as its basis?

Sutherland and Bujold have awesome cameos

the chapter titles for the dvd provide several potential titles for new movies in this vein, if any aspiring director wants to add to crytptosicko's list:

The 70s/80s VHS sex comedies aren't really being preserved anywhere, are they?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 19 December 2016 01:45 (nine years ago)

Like I remember as a kid going through the VHS seeing stuff like this

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ab/Can_I_Do_It_%27Till_I_Need_Glasses1977.jpg

And now that I'm old enough to actually watch this trash there's no place to actually see it?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 19 December 2016 01:47 (nine years ago)

H.O.T.S. at least is currently being preserved in full on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqdVrdTLUGU

These movies must have the biggest gap of all genres between the poster and the films... like, an ACTUAL overstuffed, wall-to-wall zany cartoon sex romp comedes might be something to see, but in reality these are dismally-paced, lovelessly-shot, underscripted and unfunny non-romps, ime very hard on the eyes and just uncomfortable to watch at any age.

mega pegasus for reindeer (Doctor Casino), Monday, 19 December 2016 04:59 (nine years ago)

OTM. As odd as it seems to register disappointment with something like Hot Times, the five or so mins that I sampled of it on YouTube looked painfully ugly and lazy. Like, expository dialogue looped over exterior shots of houses and aimless driving scenes shot from the backseat of a car and stuff like that.

The name of the director listed on the poster sounded familiar though. It's Jim McBride, who later went on to do the Richard Gere remake of Breathless and the well-regarded (as I recall) Dennis Quaid/Ellen Barkin thriller The Big Easy.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Monday, 19 December 2016 05:20 (nine years ago)

...and prior to Hot Times, he was responsible for the important '60s Indies David Holtzman's Diary and My Girlfriend's Wedding.

Ha, I've never watched that Gere Breathless but I grabbed the VHS tape at some point based on the wonderfully OTT-sounding back-of-the-box text, courtesy some poor sap at Video Treasures, Inc. Skipping the first bits:

Jesse is a rootless drifter whose sole hero is the comic book loner "The Silver Surfer." Monica is a brilliant student with definite plans for her future. Yet, together they are pure dynamite - in a tempestuous affair that whirls them through L.A.'s back alleys, on a desperate flight to Mexico, and finally to the tale's startling climax.

RICHARD GERE - the sexually explosive loner. VALERIE KAPRISKY - the delicate, well-bred French girl. Together, their passion will leave you BREATHLESS.

mega pegasus for reindeer (Doctor Casino), Monday, 19 December 2016 07:38 (nine years ago)

H.O.T.S. was an running joke with my friends in my late high school / early college era, it was at the video store and looked so awful that we made fun of it forever then finally rented it and made even more fun of it. One of these friends was pretty jesus-y and was vocally uncomfortable during it which made it even better.

A couple years later his fiancee came to visit his hometown and family and meet his friends for the first time and we coordinated with her beforehand so she was wearing a white t-shirt with HOTS on it in red letters when she got off the plane. She also didn't break when he freaked out and maintained that it stood for something else and it was a strictly a random coincidence.

joygoat, Monday, 19 December 2016 18:53 (nine years ago)

so what does H.O.T.S. stand for

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 December 2016 19:00 (nine years ago)

What Does H.O.T.S. Really Stand For?
Contrary to popular belief that H.O.T.S. stands for "Hold On To Sex" or "Help Out The Seals," H.O.T.S really stands for the first letter of each of the names of the movie's main characters, which are Honey, O'Hara, Terri, and Sam.

haha, perfectly encapsulates the ''more boring and unsexy than you might expect from the poster'' phenomenon.

I also learned that the two "Swinging Cheerleaders" movies (the first of which was directed by Jack Hill)--both of which were initially released a few years prior to H.O.T.S.--were re-released as H.O.T.S. II & III.
