the president of my university just authorized all personnel to leave work by 16:00 today because of the dumb Parisian heat (high of 32 today, 11 degrees above normal). I was going to give my first class of the year, but now I can roast at home instead.
I gather it's hot in the UK today too? this weather is ridiculous. though highs will be in the teens here by Friday thank goodness.
― droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 10:48 (nine years ago)
it's hot in the UK today too
Not in Scotland.

It's BOILING in London. However, if you're within shouting distance of a Waitrose, Haagen Dazs is on offer for Β£2 today so GET IN.
― jane burkini (suzy), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 11:01 (nine years ago)
X-post, I wore shirt sleeves today because it was meant to be hot (I never wear short sleeves because of scars, but it was unpleasant yesterday) and it's not that warm! It was warmer, muggier yesterday.
― two crickets sassing each other (dowd), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 11:11 (nine years ago)
it's very hot and humid in the north. I'm drenched with sweat after cutting my hedges, because of the inline I live on some sections are 12 ft high and require site prohibited balancing on the top rung of wobbling steps type doings. A nice cold tyskie has been a good tonic, but need to try not to drink any more till later because I have a curry to cook.
― calzino, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 12:01 (nine years ago)
Drunk cooking is the best. I woke up this morning to find I had made stuffed mushrooms with couscous, peppers and Brie. Was a nice surprise.
― two crickets sassing each other (dowd), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 12:26 (nine years ago)
drinking and cooking is a heavenly combination, it makes me feel like a sophisticated bon vivant - rather than the alcy disgrace I really am :p
― calzino, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 12:31 (nine years ago)
Only low 20s in Exeter, but overcast and muggy as hell with occasional peals of thunder.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 12:32 (nine years ago)
i can confirm it is also very very hot in the middle of the uk

Huge storm last night in southwest France, rained all day today
UK = WINNER
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 15:58 (nine years ago)
I wish we were getting the huge storms up here. Paris was burning again today. The metro smelled...well you already know.
22 and rain tomorrow though. Autumn can't begin soon enough after this ugly late summer.
― droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 16:38 (nine years ago)
Dutch records broken for September yesterday and today, never been this hot on these dates, 28-31. I'm ok with the heat, but it feel so weird with these temperatures that it gets dark so "early". Read a book (!) outside till one last night, dark from 20.30 on already. Times is weird.

I could see that storm approaching yesterday eve from the direction of the Skelmersdale wind turbines, it was probably weaker when it hit here. But it was very abrupt and conditions seemed to change from calm and balmy to wind, lightning and torrents of rain in about 20 seconds.
― calzino, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:58 (nine years ago)
my dad in sheffield wrote to me and described it as the biggest storm he'd ever seen (and he lived in jamaica for a while)
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:21 (nine years ago)
The last year or so in London I've definitely seen bigger storms than ever in my life. Maybe like a year or so ago there were storms so loud it felt like mechanical things breaking - way way way beyond what I've ever known in the British Isles.
― Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:45 (nine years ago)
It was definitely quite extreme for these parts and there was some beautiful rapid multiple lightning strikes. I'm sure glad as hell I had already walked my dog on the tops half an hour before it arrived.
― calzino, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:01 (nine years ago)
The worst storm I can remember was in the early 90's, it sounded like artillery bombardment for about 2 minutes. The lightning must have struck some telecom cable that didn't have any overcurrent protection because my brother's shitty archimedes pc with internet 1.0 plug in connection got fried.
― calzino, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:09 (nine years ago)
Got woken last night up by the loudest thunder clap I've ever heard in my life, it was a sort of double clap, it was like a fucking nuclear explosion.
― Bottlerockey (Tom D.), Friday, 16 September 2016 18:35 (nine years ago)

This is where I complain about it being 14C (about 58F, I guess) in Scotland, which is too hot with the amount of moisture. I can't function.

You're alright. I think I would just die over there. I spent a couple of months in the US (during a heatwave) about 20yrs ago and have stayed in Scotland since. (Also I hate flying). But I can't stop sweating - two showers before lunchtime.

Take that same amount of Scottish moisture, and then make it about 40ΒΊ C.

tell me about it. it's predicted to be 98F today. we've since exactly 0.05" of rain since about the middle of June. the entire state is covered with smoke from wildfires and at noon the sun looks orange. if I liked this sort of shit I'd live in California!

― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 October 2017 02:40 (eight years ago)
Sitting in the dark in shorts and a tank top feeling sticky. This stupidity is depriving us of a fall in which you can look forward to putting on a sweatshirt or drinking tea. Being hot and sweaty makes me very uncomfortable and sick-feeling but I'm actually more angry at being denied seasonal experiences.

one of my co-workers is a runner. his rule of thumb is that if the (fahrenheit) temperature + dew point > 150, it's too unpleasant and borderline dangerous to run.
that sum was 151 this morning at midnight on october 9
