@GladwellIf @Gawker is so important to democracy why don't they start it up again? It's not like they have to spend 300 million on printing presses.

That’s where WashingtonBabylon.com comes in. I’m going to cover DC politicians and journalists like Hollywood celebrities — not the way they are worshiped by our current media masters, but the way they were mocked and exposed by the great Hollywood tabloid Confidential and by Kenneth Anger in his wonderful, lurid book Hollywood Babylon.
You want stories about Bill Clinton shacking up with two blondes at a luxury DC hotel? Coming right up. You want to know how deeply Hillary Clinton has been penetrated by Wall Street? I’m on it. You’re wondering if Donald Trump has his brain up his ass or if he doesn’t have one at all? I can answer that question. A Democrat with a coke problem? A Republican family values man whoring around town? Trust me, these things are happening right now and I will have the details.

thank god, i thought i was going to have to read a newspaper

It wasn't funny. It was possibly rape. I was trying to kind of put it in that same category [as the Dallas video]. I didn't really look at the thing close enough to realize there's maybe something a little more sinister going on here and a little more disturbing. In a way, though, what could be more gawker? They were exciting times. Looking back, it was the best summer of my life.
― the enigma of dagmar krause (wins), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 15:24 (nine years ago)
I keep typing "gaw", which has been one of my ingrained habits when I get bored of whatever I'm supposed to be working on, a la "il" for ilxor. Of course, if I just reverse "il", I get "li" which will bring up Lifehacker. Lifehack! Things are getting easier already.

Snark lives all over the Internet and will continue to be pervasive whether it's living at Gawker or not.
"Analysis" about Gawker is hilariously shallow every time.

It's like Vice never existed. Or Spy. Or zillions of blogs. Or the raging snark that lives on Twitter.

Where is the replacement for Valleywag, then?
Defamer also always seemed better and more readable than all its competition imo
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 23:56 (nine years ago)
Valleywag never had enough eyeballs to last--the tech industry's overinflated view of itself has never translated into truly interesting gossip. It might seem odd that an industry with so much depth reporting really hasn't managed to put even one readable tech gossip site on the map.
Defamer had some moments but never had the reporting chops or deep sources that so many other places have. You need a lot of money to compete in that arena.
And then there's Idolator, which never found sea legs so it got sold where it circled the drain even faster.
The biggest surprise for me was letting Wonkette fall apart, because in the end I thought had potential on the same level of Gawker. But I don't think Denton had good sources for that site either.
― Worst Presidential Election Ever (dandydonweiner), Thursday, 25 August 2016 00:18 (nine years ago)
Wonkette had some good material after Cox left but imo lost its distinctive voice. They went from starting in 2004 to AMC leaving in 2006 to being sold in 2008!

Let's not confuse grudges with disappointment, Maura. Many people (myself included!) wanted Idolator to succeed--you were a key asset to that mission and I hated to see you go.

there's the register. not a drop-in replacement: takes a longer view, more technical definition of "tech", less exclusively focussed on SV business/culture/macroeconomics, but at least as skeptical at its best

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 19:08 (nine years ago)
the logic of the interview was interesting. it's understandable to dig into the details, but the jist I got out of it was: - the aquisition legal people were different, had a team to break the whole thing into assets/liabilities columns - they, being lawyers, decided any post that had anything to do with litigation, settled or not, was a liability - they passed on the "delete all liabilities" message (gawker.com was the main "liability" and the handful of posts got thrown on the same trash heap
so there was no judgment on the actual journalistic merits of the posts or whatever else, it's as if someone was suing them about a soda machine in the lobby and the legal best practice is "get rid of the soda machine" regardless of whether the lawsuit was stupid
if the content is fine under the new regime then go ahead and publish, it's not the same asset anymore. lol.
