He was very honest about the film this weekend; his disappointment in what he’s learned of the theatrical cut (he’s still not seen the film);

good news everyone!
David Ayer is back in the business of DC comic villains. The filmmaker, who directed Warner Bros.’ all-bad guy comic book movie Suicide Squad, is reuniting with that film’s star, Margot Robbie, for Gotham City Sirens, a feature project that will showcase the top female villains from the DC stable, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Ayer will direct and produce the project with Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, the part-time girlfriend of the Joker who is currently DC's most popular female character. Robbie also is executive producing.Sirens was a recent comic series from DC that focused on the popular villainesses from Batman’s rogue gallery. Among them were Quinn; Catwoman, Batman’s sometime love interest; and Poison Ivy, who uses plants and their toxins to get what she wants.Geneva Robertson-Dworet, a top female writer in the action sphere who also has penned scripts for the Tomb Raider remake and Warners' own Sherlock Holmes 3, is writing the screenplay.

Curious how many years it'll take before they match the comics and portray Poison Ivy as "Harley's sometime love interest."

Tuesday, news broke that Suicide Squad director David Ayer will stay in the DC film universe with an all-female film called Gotham City Sirens, which will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. But buried beneath that news is the potential of two other films based on this summer’s DC team up.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, in addition to Gotham City Sirens, DC and Warner Bros. are working on a Suicide Squad sequel and a spinoff featuring Will Smith’s Deadshot. That’s three films that will directly follow up on Suicide Squad.

well not really but being made to sit through it was a downer ending to an otherwise v enjoyable day
wondered if it was one of will smiths demented ass scientology films but I guess the gibberish comes from other sources - this was so bad, if one of the bland white guys I couldn't get straight had at 1hr45 been all "what if... I gave you your amulet back" before meaningfully pressing into will smiths hand something the filmmakers had forgotten to introduce before that point I would have just been like "yep. that's this movie"

i still can't get over how terrible jared leto's joker was. it's not even a fun, scenery-chewing bad performance, it's just embarrassing to watch

oscar winner jared leto
he's legit unwatchable
― forgive me fader for I have sinned (wins), Monday, 26 December 2016 11:22 (nine years ago)
imagine being one of the other cast members - having to put up with leto's method bullshit, being sent used condoms and dead animals in the mail for months during production while he refuses to ever leave character - all in support of a performance that would get a teenage drama student a failing grade. those poor bastards.
that gif of viola davis giving leto a contemptuous side-eye at comic-con is amazing, i'm gonna go find it and lol all over again
― Rush Limbaugh and Lou Reed doing sex with your parents (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 26 December 2016 11:30 (nine years ago)
come to think of it they did give ledgeridoo an oscar for similar nonsense but that was more a case of a genuinely talented and charismatic actor with an unfortunate hobby, in hindsight tho decades of rewarding macho bores for offscreen jerkoff marathons was always going to lead us to this infantile bullshit and a zero tolerance approach should have been taken from the off
― forgive me fader for I have sinned (wins), Monday, 26 December 2016 12:28 (nine years ago)
i don't really mind what actors feel they need to do to get into character tbh, but it's hilarious that leto put all that offscreen effort in and ended up with an onscreen performance that a panto dame would think was a bit over-the-top

the deeply silly praxis of Hollywood babies doesn't offend me if it means we get to enjoy the slobbering antics of a day-lewis or a dicaprio but staying in character, like in your real actual life, is just stupid, and staying in character as something called "the joker" or "the batman" means you deserve to be mocked until the end of time - and if you're harassing and bullying your co-workers you need to be fired and blacklisted even if the performance doesn't turn out to be worthless garbage
― forgive me fader for I have sinned (wins), Monday, 26 December 2016 13:49 (nine years ago)
truly, terrorizing everyone and then doing a very amateur performance... the sickest joke of all
― mh 😏, Monday, 26 December 2016 16:28 (nine years ago)
I'm not even sure what happened in the middle part of the movie, I wasn't paying close enough attention - there was origin story then lots of incoherent shooting then Joker shows up to take Harley away then them in a bar (best part) and the final battle. As the equivalent of a 60 minute movie it wasn't so bad.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 23 February 2017 07:38 (nine years ago)
Middle part of the movie involved them walking down a street very slowly for about 90 minutes.
― Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Thursday, 23 February 2017 07:41 (nine years ago)
middle part of the movie began with a title card which read 'obvious reshoot' iirc

This at least possibly obviates the plans which were underway for WB to release, probably within a year or so of one another, Joaquin Phoenix's Joker movie and a Suicide Squad sequel featuring Jared Leto's Joker.
Whatever else you might say about them, I think it's really cool that WB hires so many people afflicted with such profound brain trauma that they might otherwise have been rendered unemployable.
― Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 19:22 (seven years ago)
All they really need to keep is Robbie as Harley Quinn. And I think Gunn's actually a good fit tonally for Suicide Squad.I mean, it's not like there wasn't a lot of room to move up from the first installment...
― Nhex, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 19:29 (seven years ago)
I'm also impressed at Warner/DC's sheer determination to remake so many movies that no one liked to begin with. Perhaps they should alter their schedule to ONLY develop new versions of Suicide Squad.

from the dceu lineup linked in that article:
Of these, the one we likely know the most about is Birds of Prey, which will team up Harley Quinn with the Huntress, Black Canary, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya. It will star Margot Robbie, be written by Christina Hodson, and directed by Cathy Yan—who allegedly pitched an approach so intriguing that Warner Bros. fast-tracked production, bumping other movies further down the line, including Gotham City Sirens, another Harley team up (this time villain-based, with Poison Ivy and Catwoman) set to be tackled by Suicide Squad’s David Ayer.
― adam the (abanana), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 23:15 (seven years ago)
There was comic called Gotham City Sirens starring those three characters a few years ago... It was mostly based on the fact that all three have become more like anti-heroes than villains in recent times, as ongoing superhero series with a pure villain protagonist are pretty hard to pull off. Obviously it had a lot of cheesecake too.

They should have just rebooted the entire universe with Challengers of the Unknown and given that the Gunn. He'd be perfect for it. Then build towards a New Frontier-style thingy.
― Plinka Trinka Banga Tink (Eliza D.), Thursday, 11 October 2018 13:25 (seven years ago)
I wonder if the people who are tasked with rebooting a franchise strategize about what they can do to ease the undertaking of whoever will, within the next half decade, be tasked with rebooting their reboot. Like you don't want your reboot to be too good or overly-ambitious because that would be unfair to the journeyman director who will be reshaping your reshaped vision but whose experience in the industry at this point is limited to a few episodes of Blue Bloods.
