Marijuana: Classic or Dud?

The guys says it's actually the HHS that determines schedules, not the DEA. Stuff on schedules around the 4-minute mark in the interview. Catch-22 stuff is that the reason it is considered schedule 1 is because it falls under the category of "the drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical treatment use in the U.S.," which is complicated because even though marijuana *is* being offered medically in several states it's really still doing it extra legally.

The takeaway is basically that it is very unlikely that marijuana will ever be classified a medicine in the US, but that after it is (eventually) legalized on a federal level here it should get tacit FDA approval (as such) on the same tier as stuff like vitamins and other supplements. That is, the FDA will not give its imprimatur and vouch for its not scientifically consistent claims as a medicine but will allow it to be sold with the usual printed caveats. It all sounds sort of roundabout and catch-22-y, but the biggest hold up in FDA approval seems to be its illegality on a Federal level, yet once it is made legal then the FDA approval will be made moot.

Sounds to me like Obama admin has its finger to the wind and is just waiting out the clock, a la marriage equality.

Part of my takeaway is about the specific comments on it being a potential drug of abuse (ie getting high) - other than alcohol (though everything there revolves around 'responsible use' despite making things like Fireball that exist only to get 19-year olds fuckin' hammered), we're still hamstrung culturally by this idea that it's wrong to get high.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 13 August 2016 06:00 (nine years ago)

But no one is trying to classify alcohol as an FDA approved medicine, dangerous as it can be.

Ordered an oral tincture of 'legal' CBD oil (which is apparently still a gray area) with negligible THC content from 4 Corners Cannabis in Colorado just to see if it has any effect on low-level anxiety that's been bothering me lately.

Drink, tobacco, weed :: Father, Son, Holy Ghost

calstars, Wednesday, 17 August 2016 22:25 (nine years ago)

my wife put cbd oil in her tea for a couple weeks and said it helped but I'm not sure if a placebo would help just as much or not..

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 17 August 2016 23:50 (nine years ago)

two weeks pass...

the pure CBD oil does seem a little relaxing but nothing mindblowing - taking some did calm

Tried a hash oil that's 78% CBD/8% THC through a vaporizer - very strange, definitely some body relaxation (like a mild muscle relaxer) and a mental calm without feeling 'high.' If weed ever becomes legal, this kind of combo will become incredibly popular.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 2 September 2016 05:31 (nine years ago)

where do you hail from milo? so weird that weed is just straight up illegal almost everywhere. i'm in WA state, and I'm right on the border of OR too, so there are just...stores. weed stores everywhere. they sell all manner of everything and I haven't even been in one yet because you need a photo ID to get inside, I just send the missus in like she's stopping by the grocery for milk. so !

of course we aren't living in any kind of mad max scenario everything is fine.

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Friday, 2 September 2016 08:44 (nine years ago)

speaking of the missus she quite likes the "CBD"s because they help with her migraines, may have to look into this pure CBD oil business

I guess we've come a long way from "here's a baggie of whatever is is, good luck"

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Friday, 2 September 2016 08:48 (nine years ago)

From what I've read, that kind of a percentage of CBD seems really high...I thought about 5% was about where that tops out in traditional strains.

calstars, Friday, 2 September 2016 11:54 (nine years ago)

It's very high, but once the stories came out about CBD and epilepsy/etc. it seems like breeders managed to encourage high CBD quite quickly. There are other strains that are more like 1:1 by bringing down THC levels to 9-10% and bringing up CBD to that level.

i live in a shitty state (OH) so this is still what we've got, though the quality of whatever is in the baggie has increased considerably since i first started buying weed in high school

OH almost legalized rec last year but it was a weird monopoly w/ a restricted # of growers (though still allowed home growing iirc) and was voted down, we also just passed a shitty medical bill

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:31 (nine years ago)

i'd love to try various strains and oils to see what works best though, just hope it's sooner rather than later that i get to do that in my home state

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:31 (nine years ago)

Reading about all the things that exist in OR/CO/WA is crazy. Here's an e-cig juice that will get you high if you want the easiest route, or here's some pot with the actual THC/CBD/etc. characteristics tested or here's edibles/wax/etc..

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:45 (nine years ago)

yea it is truly wild, i do wonder whether more widespread legalization will eventually come with some heavier restrictions on what can be sold

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:46 (nine years ago)

Edibles probably need to be regulated more than anything else - Maureen Dowd had a column about eating an entire chocolate bar and getting way too high, it's not uncommon in the legal states apparently. The guide Dowd used says he told her that the bar was meant to be split among multiple people but the package didn't say that.

it's p much like this in CA now too, the range of shit at dispensaries is bewildering. I expect full legalization is gonna happen in November.

Οὖτις, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:49 (nine years ago)

The amount of stuff you can get off Craigslist in a non legal state is even amazing

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:51 (nine years ago)

how has that worked out for you? buying drugs on craigslist freaks me out tbh

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 17:04 (nine years ago)

I won't even sell old housewares on Craigslist because I don't want to deal with the people involved, fuck buying illicit substances.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 2 September 2016 17:08 (nine years ago)

I've only had relatively nice experiences. Went through two guys that were ok but not ideal, now I have one regular dude I deal with.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 2 September 2016 17:19 (nine years ago)

Not many other great options for a middle aged person if you're not in a legal state. But if youre in a decent size city Craigslist is your best bet without knowing someone already.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 2 September 2016 17:21 (nine years ago)

I buy Kratom from a c-lister and it's been peachy (though Kratom is not illegal, yet)

pinkhushpuppies (rip van wanko), Friday, 2 September 2016 18:19 (nine years ago)

still kinda shocked that weed isn't completely legal in vt

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 2 September 2016 18:20 (nine years ago)

Idk man there's only millions of people that have been using it for years and years without any reall incidents of overdose or ill effects.i think we need some more time to study this before we start letter people use it.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 2 September 2016 18:25 (nine years ago)

Letting not letter

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 2 September 2016 18:26 (nine years ago)

I'd rather learn to navigate the darknet myself (if my relatively tech illiterate friend can do it...) than buy from a Craigslist stranger.

Felt kind of like a ridiculous stoner for thinking to myself that I'd pack up and move to WA/OR/CO tomorrow if it were feasible... then remembered that those were the three I'd choose first before legalization anyway.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 2 September 2016 18:30 (nine years ago)

I'd sketch way more with having something mails to me.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 2 September 2016 18:32 (nine years ago)

paranoia understandable here

calstars, Friday, 2 September 2016 20:27 (nine years ago)

anyone here messed around with "dabs"? I tried it twice at the behest of a connoisseur friend and it was way, way too much. felt like I was on magic mushrooms, which is kind of neat, we are certainly a ways away from a psychedelics shop but god, I don't know how people do that everyday

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Saturday, 3 September 2016 00:38 (nine years ago)

lesh is more

calstars, Saturday, 3 September 2016 01:33 (nine years ago)

I studied all the shit you have to do to use darknet, and #nope

pinkhushpuppies (rip van wanko), Saturday, 3 September 2016 01:44 (nine years ago)

But if you use freenet or tor and 47 proxies and set up a bc account and get a scrambler and a wallet etc etc etc etc, apparently theres no need to wig out about the package

pinkhushpuppies (rip van wanko), Saturday, 3 September 2016 01:47 (nine years ago)

right?

calstars, Saturday, 3 September 2016 01:54 (nine years ago)

know plenty of ppl who are only moderately computer savvy who have been doing darknet stuff for years without incident.

circa1916, Saturday, 3 September 2016 02:52 (nine years ago)

Dabbing sounds horrendous to me. Some teens on the bus were discussing it and saying that basically you have to get too fucked up several times before you can enjoy it.that's not for me.excessive stone to that degree is just nightmare fuel to me

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Saturday, 3 September 2016 02:56 (nine years ago)

Ha. Yeah, every story I've heard about dabs wasn't a good one. Basically an unexpected trip. Not for the casual.

circa1916, Saturday, 3 September 2016 02:59 (nine years ago)

Thank god psychedelics don't give you cottonmouth like too much weed.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 3 September 2016 03:49 (nine years ago)

cottonmouth > shroom yawns imo

five months pass...

I think i’m done with weed for good

been a regular toker 16 years (and I’m not even 30 yet... 🤦🏻‍♂️) and daily for at least the last 5. ive taken breaks before but recently i started one a few weeks ago and it just snapped so sharply into relief how much it’s been holding me back and causing all kinds of mental health issues.

might smoke again casually at some point but it’s gotta be very irregular

still totally addicted and miss it badly tho

flopson, Friday, 30 October 2020 06:17 (five years ago)

same dawg :)

i stopped recently after ~2 years of smoking daily... i had a minor panic attack while traveling (not unusual for me lol.....) and decided to use that as an intervention and see how removing the substance from my daily existence felt to me. been about a month now and i feel great about it. i miss it at certain moments no doubt and have indulged lightly in a few social situations since trying seriously to break the habit, but having consecutive days of mental clarity has been wonderful. it's interesting, i'm re-learning which parts of my lifestyle (procrastination, staying up late) are in a sense intrinsic and not fully traceable back to being stoned all the time. but i'm not engaged in a constant battle in my own head about anxiety and at what points the weed is helping and at what points it's not. it felt stressful at the time and i can locate the absence of that stress from the outside now. my perspective as it pertains to my own mental health is much better. my desire is to eventually get back to a place where i can have weed around and use it responsibly -- i.e stopping when i know i should, not smoking until the minute i get into bed etc -- but that's down the road.
