COLD BREW UPDATE: the ratio of 1:4.5 that I used previously was supposed to be VOLUME, not WEIGHT (fuck you Serious Eats for peddling some gd volume ratios). Just made another batch w/ 1:10 by weight but haven't tried it yet. Will report back but I anticipate it being much better.

i think my favorite iced coffee drink is still just espresso shots poured over ice

that's the ratio i've used succssfully, but i just think of it as 1/3 c grounds : 12 oz water; or 1 cup grounds:36 oz water.

I'm happy to report that my 1:10-by-weight cold brew ratio has produced a MUCH more sensible finished product that dilutes nicely to something like 2:1 coffee:water (or in my case vanilla almond milk, h/t to mh upthread I think), aaaaand I realized I could strain the final thing through a Thai tea sock, which is much better than a metal strainer and easier to set up than a cheesecloth (though rinsing out the leftover grounds is a bit of a PITA). This is proving to be a v great way to use up these gross overroasted beans we have lying around, though I want to do the math and see how much each serving costs. I know the yield is smaller w/ cold brew but I wonder how drastic it is.

UPDATE: The Starbucks Via Colombia that everyone rates v highly is... ok. It's not great but it's much better than most instant coffee. I can't decide if it's worse or better than the Kcup coffee we have in our office that I bought it to replace.

wanted something different so bought some from red bird (online place out of bozeman) someone once mentioned on here. to whomever that was, you have good taste! drinking the single origin from Brazil now (Guatemala is on stand-by) and it's a damn fine example of the bean imho

I decalcified The Machine today.
I still drink Italian espresso house blend from the place down the street. And yet there's so much opportunity here to branch out. But it's good! My excuse is obstinance+frugality :/

ive been buying coffee from these people https://risingstarcoffee.com and it is the best coffee. one of their shops is walking distace from my job and they are opening another one close to where i live. they are a little pricey but ive been granting myself this luxury

I got a thermos recently. It's like a miracle -- hot coffee throughout the day. So much better than standard travel mugs.

I have to drive 20-25 minutes to get freshly roasted coffee, so this looked interesting as a stopgap when I run out until I went to the price part and realized that my usual Chemex pot of iced coffee would be $7(or maybe even $14, I use 40g of coffee)

Just got a Bonavita BV1800 drip coffee maker. For some reason it makes really good coffee, despite its simplicity.

i think one of the big reasons is that it brews at a higher temp than most drip machines. i attended a 3-hour lecture/tasting with george howell recently and they brewed everything on a bonavita

I use my Chemex with the Bonavita, the showerhead is perfect for a 6-8 cup Chemex and I don't have to stand there pouring on top of a scale.

The Ratio Eight does basically the same thing for $600 but looks better. I'll stick with the Bonavita.

Chemex has been treating me real well lately. Drinking my cof right now. mmmmmmmmmmm.....

love my aeropress but had some chemex brewed cof over the holiday and was really impressed -- mighta been the beans tho who knows

what's the difference between chemex and a hario v60? what's with that weird cloth

chemex is great but i don't think i'd want it as my exclusive brewer. the coffee it produces is extremely clean and bright, and sometimes i want a muddier thick brew

I'm quite happy with it.

I don't generally brew coffee on weekday mornings because that's in conflict with my donut and coffee buying ritual but maybe I should just change it up and start buying just donuts.
