I watched it when it first came out, then tired of it and didn't watch it for about 4 or 5 years. Been watching it semi-regularly recently and it's pretty good. In fact, the last few weeks I've been getting more chuckles out of South Park than Chappelle, which follows it.

whatever. setups can be inherently funny. i'm willing to bet the vast majority of comedy begins with a funny setup, and is then fleshed out in order to fill up the appropriate amount of time/pages.

Well, there are a lot of ways to do great comedy, I couldn't
deny that. But for me, South Park falls direly short in every
aspect.

The first few seasons of SP were mostly shock humor and not that good. Somewhere around the movie they stopped fucking around and decided to turn the show into a strongly moralistic show, where the message is "people need to stop being such fuckwits and act a little more human" and it became golden. Seasons 5 & 6 are the best so far. The new season has been a bit weak so far but still worth watching. Best episodes include "Scott Tenerman Must Die", the Butters episode, the LoTR parody (goddamn that's a good one), "Red Sleigh Down", and, in a completely different vein, "Kenny Dies." [/geek]

The only thing I ever enjoyed about Ren & Stimpy was the line "It's better than bad, it's good!" The artwork was hideous (whereas SP is total eye candy).

Yeah, the LOTR one was just amazing - you can really tell that the guys are fans. I think that the show is *very rarely* shocking for the sake of being shocking, and I could name dozes and dozens of hilarious SP moments that don't deal with gross-out humor or shock value AT ALL. Funnily enough, while the accusations of "lack of heart", cheap gags and overtly cynical outlooks don't ring true for me concerning "South Park" AT ALL, they do pretty much sum up my thoughts on the shows that ppl here have trotted out as being superior ("Ren & Stimpy", "Beavis & Butthead")

wtf kingfish, "Not Without My Anus" is the worst episode they ever made! Terrance & Philip are probably the closest that SP has come to being guilty of what its detractors accuse it of...I mean, the anti-canadian humor was done much better in the movie and in "Red Sleigh Down", and Saddam's had plenty better appearences, too, so what do you have left after that? Also, maybe this is a cultural thing, but I've never understood exactly what T&P are supposed to be a parody of.

T&P were designed to be everything that the show was originally accused of being; nothing but "fart jokes & bad animation," as Trey & Matt have said repeatedly in episodes.

the Not Without My Anus was killer for me in that it was the most bizarro/non-sequitor thing they've ever done. They were also proud that they got the Canadian National Anthem on twice on american tv within 22 minutes.

No. The genius of Ren and Stimpy can be summed up in 6 cartoons: "Stimpy's Invention" (the Happy Helmet); "Black Hole"; "Space Madness"; "Son of Stimpy" (...and it made as souuuunnnnd!); "Yak Shaving Day"; and the "All Kids Love Log" spots.
Now, granted, these individual 'toons are brilliance that will never be exceeded by anyone...anywhere...ever, but sadly, if you put all of that on a VCR tape, and you have slightly less than 1 hour of entertainment. And it's all the Ren and Stimpy you'll ever need.
Nothing else in the series measures up.

South Park on the other hand, has had its ups and downs (the "You Got Served" episode last night was kind of lame) but has had episodes that come close to brilliance. Such as the LOTR parody, or their satire of The Passion.

More non-sequitor than fighting the frizzies? More bizarro than Niblet, Mecha Streisand, Russel Crowe's tv show or TOWELIE??? NWMA almost feels like it was made to be so tedious and flat on purpose, our anger over not knowing who Cartman's mom is thus being enlarged by outrage over how crappy what they're showing us instead is...which is funny conceptually but, you know, not much fun to sit through.

They were also proud that they got the Canadian National Anthem on twice on american tv within 22 minutes.

Now that truly is cool.
