i feel the opposite way from titchyschneider. he used to annoy me but now he's really being himself (rather than "undergoing a makeover") i can't get enough of him. he makes me LOL night after night.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

oh he still makes me LOL, but he does look ridiculous

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

he looks good!(...maybe) i think that in his previous years on BBBM he was a bit stifled & he's really relaxed into his role this year. this dandified look, rather than being a makeover, is him actually just being himself.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't he just a failed stand-up/junkie who reinvented himself by eating a thesaurus?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

"failed...junkie" hmmmm

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

just? it sounds like quite an achievement to me.

xpost

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

I think he's great. such an obvious pillhead

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

if only he could have kept to a limited vocab and been a successful drug addict.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

This is kinda why I hate him:

http://football.guardian.co.uk/worldcup2006/comment/story/0,,1794532,00.html

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

ok that's virtually unreadable.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

but hate is a strong word, you know?

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

I thought that article was ok.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

it would prob have come across better in his artful-dodgery raffish patter.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

... 'cos it sure as fuck doesn't work on the printed page. where's my blue pencil?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

that articles okay, once you get past the first paragraph which is a bit of a mess. the rest is kinda random

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

yes, exactly. kinda wank, too.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

never used to find him funny, but something seems to have clicked this year; Big Mouth is more entertaining that the BB main show for this reason.

teh_kit has 21 friends (g-kit), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:01 (nineteen years ago)

Funny watching him on Jonathan Ross as you could see the fear in Ross's eyes as the future spreadeagled himself before him. He tried to tame him but it was like fighting a jellyfish, too slippery, too fast, too clever.

I love the way he drops arcane words into his speech and he's the only person I've heard who's used the crack is moreish gag and made it work.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:08 (nineteen years ago)

i used to hate him but can't remember why -- thought he was just generic e4 presenter-guy, i suppose -- but bbbm is brilliant this year.

unfortunately saying '...the SWINE' has crept into my stock of lame tv-derived catchphrases.

example of brilliance: on the caption competition, the screen came up and instead of a caption it just said "winning caption". brand said it was a conceptual ploy a la derrida (or words to funnier effect). that's quick thinking, for a crackhead.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:18 (nineteen years ago)

He seems designed to irritate, but he's made me laff out loud at least twice this year which is a fair achievement. So I v. grudgingly like him. His patter/patois is irresistably watchable, full of high-speed twisted malapropisms and Uriah Heep tics, he's at least doing something semi-original within the current funnee presenters milieu.

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

also when he shouted at paul morley for being a square for writing for the guardian.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:24 (nineteen years ago)

My little brother helps run a comedy club in London, and he has met le Brand and says he is lovely, and that telly people like him because he is totally professional. If you shout in his earpiece that he needs to make shit up for the next two minutes, he'll do it. It seems like a strange skill in the real world, but is highly prized in tellyland.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:32 (nineteen years ago)

worst person ever! we don't need a will self for the pete doherty generation. awful taste in music too. and abysmal style.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

i like his serial celeb dating despite his confession to the papers that he's got a teeny titchy dinkle. also the trailer w/ him and o'leary - check russell running for the helicopter - sooo foppish ha ha

beeble (beeble), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:15 (nineteen years ago)

the running joke about him, 'bepe', gaffney, walliams is funny, but now he mentions his 'dinkle' in every ep it's a bit creepy?

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

So how much coke do you reckon he gets thru a week?

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

Over exposed - like every single good thing these days. He's trying to keep what was essentially a stand up act going through hours of telly. Is there anyone in the whole wide world who could do that? and ITV want him for the new J Ross or something so that's the end of him. Who's next?

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

Justin Collins!!!!!!!!

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

overexposed?

he's on bbbm and...?

side-point: dermot and bblb have really gone off the boil.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

Dermot's wasted on BB, he's actually got some talent, isn't he bored shitless of it all by now?

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

Until now the word 'dandy' has not appeared in this thread.

Hotman Paris Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:34 (nineteen years ago)

Fop has. Close enough, no?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

The first post mentions "dandified". Is that not enough?

I echo this post entirely: "I am torn between thinking he's very funny and thinking he's an irritating nob end. He's probably both. "

I basically don't like him, yet find myself laughing at him.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

Brand will never be as good as he was when we was running around Homelands/Creamfields etc. going up to random punters with a mic in order to demonstrate that he was even more loved up than they were, on MTV's Dancefloor Chart.

He needs to become the new presenter of a revived Blankety Blank on BBC prime time.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:45 (nineteen years ago)

Prime time is the death of comic talent (not that I think Russell Brand has much of that)

skinny jeans on boys = always wrong; makes their legs look like TWIGS

Believe me it's a lot worse here, celebrities actually go to prison in the USA occasionally.

Please play Lou Reed's irritating guitar sounds (Tom D.), Friday, 4 April 2025 15:27 (one year ago)

Reminds me of this joke.

In all seriousness, even after Weinstein's conviction, it's been a mixed bag when it comes to the courts. Cosby was eventually freed and even Weinstein got a retrial (which should happen in less than two weeks). Some other successful convictions (like R. Kelly where they nailed him specifically for racketeering and sex trafficking) but otherwise I feel like settlements in civil cases have been the most reliable and consistent successes to be had, and even then not always.

rameau in the main room (dog latin), Saturday, 25 April 2026 07:02 (one month ago)

I feel like Brand is being funny on purpose here as a bit, certainly after a certain point? Like maybe he genuinely can't find the passage he's looking for to begin with but then he's definitely stretching it out on purpose because he knows it's funny. Which seems reckless to the point of sociopathy under the circumstances, but I guess he is?

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Saturday, 25 April 2026 07:22 (one month ago)

Being funny would certainly be a first for Russell Brand.

Clarinet Cop (Tom D.), Saturday, 25 April 2026 07:39 (one month ago)

It wouldn't though? He's obviously not a good guy, and doing comedy bits when you're on tv talking about being on trial for rape doesn't speak well of him, but he was a successful comedian for years, he's good at making people laugh. It makes me feel crazy to see so many people on social media joking about how this is the funniest thing he's ever done and it's unintentional when it seems obvious to me that it is intentional

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Saturday, 25 April 2026 09:21 (one month ago)

Absolutely not something to care about either way, if it's unintentional he's an irredeemable shitbag, if it's intentional he's an irredeemable shitbag.

Which, of course, doesn't mean he's funny.

Clarinet Cop (Tom D.), Saturday, 25 April 2026 09:47 (one month ago)

The point isn't whether it's funny or not though. It's about a serial abuser continuing to play the class clown in public. Why he's appearing on tv in the first place is a mystery. Why are they asking him about his favourite bible quotes ffs?

rameau in the main room (dog latin), Saturday, 25 April 2026 10:11 (one month ago)

He’s made a big deal out of converting to Christianity and has just published a book about it. Morgan did a gotcha on him which exposed how shallow and convenient his supposed rebirth is.

ILX has been anti-stand-up comedy for years. This won't get much of a hearing here, even before you factor in all of the other horrors.

You don't really have to be anti-stand up comedy to not accept that success equals quality either. Stereophonics were good at making people enjoy their music too, doesn't mean I'm anti music if I think they're shite.

xp think it's more in the sense of: as it's sold a lot in the first place, then that's where you ought to start and take it seriously.
