trader joe's cold brew concentrate is a good alternative, and not too expensive

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 18 July 2016 18:20 (nine years ago)

I didn't like the TJ's when I tried it, though I haven't had any other.

nickn, Monday, 18 July 2016 18:22 (nine years ago)

hey grady guess what

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 18 July 2016 18:56 (nine years ago)

I tried making a small batch cold brew and I lost a LOT of water (like I started with 18oz and wound up with less than 12). Is this normal??

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 11:54 (nine years ago)

At larger volumes I've definitely had close to a third of the water retained in the grounds after brewing and filtering.

Sean, let me be clear (silby), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 14:01 (nine years ago)

did u squeeze the grounds

mh, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 14:22 (nine years ago)

Also it comes in a plastic cup the size of my head so that's convenient.

If authoritarianism is Romania's ironing board, then (in orbit), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 14:42 (nine years ago)

did u squeeze the grounds

I kinda pressed them down in the strainer but not much came out.

I also did a second filter thru my Kalita Wave to get the sediment out and 45 min later it still wasn't done.

Here's an expert (award winning New Orleans barrista, 15 yrs) on how to properly cold brew.

Abandon hype all ye who enter here (Sanpaku), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:24 (nine years ago)

His terminology is a bit confusing - he calls it a slow drip, but that's immersion cold brew. Really no different from French Press or mason jar immersion then poured through a filter. I had a Toddy and thought it was more of a pain in the ass than mason jar + filter method.

Slow drip is a different beast, like my little Iwaki or the big Yama drippers where the water drips onto the water one at a time.

I tried a hot bloom with the Iwaki yesterday and it was fantastic - 40g coffee (found out the hard way that 50g is too much w/ a bloom), 40g of 205F water and a stir, 400g room temp water. Poured over ice and then cut 1/3 to 1/2 with cold water was refreshing as hell.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 22:50 (nine years ago)

it's basically just the instructions that come with a toddy container lol.

jim in vancouver, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 23:02 (nine years ago)

ya srsly if u plug up the hole its not dripping man

lag∞n, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 23:02 (nine years ago)

i usually do my cold press for ~12 hours max wld be curios to experiment w 24 tho, also with the hot bloom

lag∞n, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 23:03 (nine years ago)

xp: Mayhaps. I, like probably most other New Orleanians, have tried the cold brew concentrate sold in local refrigerator sections, but much prefer fresh and hot. I did think the tips on 70/30 roast, grind size, and coffee leftovers in the ice cube tray might be useful, but it was mostly the synchrony of this thread and the same discussion on the NOLA reddit that caught my eye.

ok this cold brew concentrate is REALLY strong, like 1 part concentrate and 2-3 parts water/milk makes v robust beverage. Gonna try the vanilla almond milk #hack today!!

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 13:36 (nine years ago)

i have now switched to just drinking cortados at work - so tasty when you make w/ heavy cream, takes 30 seconds to drink.

clouds, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 14:43 (nine years ago)

you have a frother at work?

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 14:44 (nine years ago)

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 16:00 (nine years ago)

sucked down a cold brew and now I'm shitposting all over the election thread

Sean, let me be clear (silby), Thursday, 28 July 2016 20:00 (nine years ago)

getting kind of over cold brew tbh. was at a stumptown the other day and got a "cold shot" which is cold brew concentrate infused with nitrogen to be like cold espresso. was fine but it's not really anything to be excited about just cause the damn thing is cold.

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 28 July 2016 20:05 (nine years ago)

im thinking i prefer darker/stronger roasts when drinking cold brews

i used a french press then filtered it and put it on ice and adjust with water and ya it comes out too light

i think this method might be good with a darker/vienna roast

i will try immersing the light roast for 24hrs and will see if thats better

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 28 July 2016 20:10 (nine years ago)

Flash iced is still unbeatable for cold coffee IMO.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 28 July 2016 20:16 (nine years ago)

well i might have to buy a chemex, aeropress or hario for that

which im not entirely opposed to

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 28 July 2016 20:24 (nine years ago)

You can make it in some drip machines if they have a thermal carafe instead of hotplate.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 28 July 2016 20:28 (nine years ago)

i have been putting drip coffee + coconut milk in a blender & drinking over ice in the mornings, it's p good

trying to cut back on dairy a bit, but hell no i aint cutting back on my cof

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 July 2016 20:51 (nine years ago)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 28 July 2016 21:22 (nine years ago)

yep it's this one. my Place had two of them set up side by side today, i saw them in action. it's like one drop of cold water every 5-6 seconds. and it is like goddamn liquid gold in a cup when it's finished, just ridic. despite my aeropress and activity on this thread i'm not a snob, i like bustelo. but this is just NEXT LEVELLLLLLL

http://www.hario.co.uk/water-dripper-clear.html

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 28 July 2016 21:24 (nine years ago)

I was thinking about getting a french press again or some other fancy thingamabob, but instead I bought a filter cone for like $4 and it has been pretty ideal for me. I'm usually only making one cup. It's really easy to clean. Recommend.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 July 2016 21:28 (nine years ago)

i can taste the difference in the ways ive prepared coffee so far

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 28 July 2016 21:35 (nine years ago)

my coworker who doesn't mind the time investment of making a french press of cof at work (and enjoys sharing it with me) can't have caffeine!! he was in a bike accident and got a nasty concussion and the doctors told him to stay away from caffeine for a month. was going to buy him a bag of really good beans but I must wait.

the bike accident is the bigger tragedy, I think.

mh, Thursday, 28 July 2016 21:44 (nine years ago)

i swear to god the hario cold drop is like coffee whiskey. so strong, so complicated, so crazy. you have it with a couple of ice cubes and just sip it for like half an hour.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 28 July 2016 22:01 (nine years ago)

cold DRIP i mean

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 28 July 2016 22:01 (nine years ago)

mic drip

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 July 2016 22:05 (nine years ago)

Iwaki cold drip doesn't make a large amount (maybe 16oz) and the drip speed isn't adjustable but it's only $30. Definitely brighter-tasting than immersion cold brew, very refreshing. Sometimes hard to tell the difference between cold drip and flash-iced to me, but the former will have less caffeine IIRC.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 28 July 2016 22:09 (nine years ago)

I stopped at Wawa this morning on my way to work (local "lifestyle" convenience store chain) and got an iced coffee there, and you get it out of a machine, and it's just like a thick sweet milky liquid that tastes like melted coffee ice cream with a waffle cone aftertaste?? to be fair it tasted p good but this is NOT how i want my morning cof

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 29 July 2016 13:58 (nine years ago)

oh shit i haven't had any cof yet

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 29 July 2016 13:59 (nine years ago)

intrigued by this waffle cone-ness

mh, Friday, 29 July 2016 13:59 (nine years ago)

I've had a low level headache for 24 hours and thought maybe it was because I didn't have cof yesterday.

No such luck, not caffeine-related.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 29 July 2016 14:27 (nine years ago)

mh maybe the univ is gently urging you to come visit ya boy stevie

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 29 July 2016 17:15 (nine years ago)
