if it makes you feel any better, if I had a full-time job working for one employer that wasn't myself, I'd probably kill ... eh, I'd either quit or get fired within 18 months
― sarahell, Sunday, 17 July 2016 18:35 (nine years ago)
can I have a few coworkers who work from home, making it not a big deal when another of us works from home a few days, which has stretched into "I'm working eight hours today from a house on the beach, and will be going to the beach after that time, but it's totally a normal work day, I swear"
― mh, Sunday, 17 July 2016 19:49 (nine years ago)
uh remove the "can" from that

I get four weeks vacation -- for some reason this is fairly common in my field but not in a lot of fields.

28 days is the legal minimum in the UK for full time worker. I get 21 days plus all the bank holidays (you are not guaranteed all the back holidays but it must be 28 days in total)
(I tried to get my entitlement reduced because I always have spare holiday left at the end of the year and would rather have the money but I was told it was not possible because of this minimum. This didn't stop them taking them off me, unpaid, when they 'expired')
― koogs, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 03:16 (nine years ago)
Oh, this thread is massively of topic now, sorry
― koogs, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 03:17 (nine years ago)
I work three days per year, of which two I am required to post on Facebook neighborhoods
― mh, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 03:49 (nine years ago)
Just ask a neighbourhood FB group what all their holiday entitlements and report back

there is a parody thread going now on my group, sort of nice to remember there are other sane people in the neighborhood.

Locals are thrilled that the authorities have finally cleaned the graffiti off of abandoned former strip club Wiggles. Pictured is councilwoman Karen Koslowitz.

I'll try to post stuff about it later but we have a huge local controversy right now over some nutjob and his Trump sign. Someone stole it multiple times, so the guy posted flyers all over the neighborhood offering a $5K reward plus 10% interest in his "lawsuit" proceeds for info about the thief. However he posted them on a bunch of old-growth trees (which is illegal) and did like $40,000 in damage.
The same guy also apparently ran for local office a few years ago and backed over a child with his campaign bus, killing the child.

how do you do that much damage to trees by just posting stuff on them? then again, if anyone could figure out how, it's probably that guy

IDK much about trees but I guess staples are kind of bad for them?
― the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Thursday, 15 September 2016 16:51 (nine years ago)
he also put up a LOT of flyers, like this may have been small amounts of damage to a large number of trees

I signed up for Nextdoor based on this thread's recommendations, since my neighborhood Facebook group wasn't paying off at all in terms of being the worst thing ever. The only suspicious person reported has been a white guy with purple hair, who was actually walking around breaking into cars in broad daylight.
― how's life, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 13:50 (nine years ago)
same
nextdoor has actually been pretty reasonable in my area, although I haven't gained anything of value from it beyond an idea of which blocks have people who like online communities
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh π), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 14:31 (nine years ago)
I just joined again, even though they keep putting me in a neighborhood that's not even in my zip code.
But I did see there's a "Nearby Neighborhoods" function, so maybe I can sneak back into my own zone.
Had to use the postcard function. That's cute.

my latest favorite thing on nextdoor is the weekly "anyone know why police helicopter is flying overhead?"
― assawoman bay (harbl), Thursday, 22 September 2016 11:00 (nine years ago)
More disturbingly, there are a lot of 'My husband was beaten up walking home' / 'Someone was in our garden trying to get in the back door last night' / 'Saw some sketchy people trying all the car doors down the street' posts which have pretty much stopped me leaving the house or sleeping soundly at night. I'd kind of rather be ignorant of these things.

Lol harbl yes, and in our case it's almost always actually a news traffic helicopter

I will say that they're not as batshit crazy on Nextdoor as they are on Facebook. Have run across any Sambo's posts yet.
Someone did post a Facebook link to a video and got besieged with half a dozen "I dont do Facebock!" replies.
― pplains, Thursday, 22 September 2016 13:03 (nine years ago)
Someone put me on a neighborhood fb group and it's lovely--flyers for community events, sales at locally owned stores, promoting music & art openings, being neighbors. It's heavily moderated by the owner tho.

NYC is still a liberal city even though Queens has some conservatives, so anyone posting anything overtly racist/homophobic gets shouted down pretty quickly.

lol I always assumed it was mostly old people where one wouldn't have had an account prior to being married but wants to check grandchild pictures or something, but that makes more sense
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh π), Thursday, 29 September 2016 13:48 (nine years ago)
I have a friend like that. She first friended me years ago under her name "Angela Beauchamp". Later we were apparently defriended, and then she readded me under the account "Angela N Kevin Beauchamp". I got another friend request from her about a month ago under the "Angela Beauchamp" moniker again, and she is not currently friends with the "Angela N Kevin" account, which has apparently defriended me but is still active.

bike paths (of the "cycle track"/protected bike lane variety) have been a hot topic on mine lately too. last year they put one in a very rich neighborhood. everyone was so mad. they can't double park anymore, there are less parking spots, bicyclists should use the sidewalk, whatever. now they're putting in another one in a really good place for bike commuting to downtown and it's starting again. like this is going to add time to my already short commute which i should not even be using a car for. waaaaaa.
