I might make it along for the early set then!

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 8 July 2016 14:52 (nine years ago)

i might be around for an early set as it happens as well.

Fizzles, Friday, 8 July 2016 17:29 (nine years ago)

I just put some real cheesy garageband beats under an old horrible noize track of mine and am planning on dropping it at some point. At this stage I can't actually tell if I like it or not, I've been fiddling about with it for the last couple of hours. I think it's probably stupid as shit but it just might work.

It's upstairs at the Caroline of Brunswick this time, by the way - not sure if that's actually been mentioned yet? Doors at 9, I probably will grab the first or second slot for my first go, nobody else ever wants them.

emil.y, Saturday, 9 July 2016 01:23 (nine years ago)

nine's probably getting on a bit for me, as I've got to go back to London - but if anyone/the Colonel is around for a pint a bit earlier, say eight-ish, post here, and I'll pop my head in.

Fizzles, Saturday, 9 July 2016 16:11 (nine years ago)

I'll be there at eight but might be a bit busy prepping the room. Say hi if you spot me, though.

emil.y, Saturday, 9 July 2016 16:50 (nine years ago)

will do emil.y, and know what it's like, so yes, i'll just wave and say hello.

Fizzles, Saturday, 9 July 2016 16:56 (nine years ago)

I can get there for 8, Fizzles - see you in a bit?

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 9 July 2016 17:42 (nine years ago)

works for me, yep.

Fizzles, Saturday, 9 July 2016 17:51 (nine years ago)

flying visit but always good to see CP, and good to meet emil.y, esp for a set that introduced Phew to me.

Fizzles, Sunday, 10 July 2016 13:53 (nine years ago)

Oh dear god I think I am only just getting a hangover now, have been drunk the whole day. Really nice to meet you Fizzles and good to actually have a proper hangout with CP. Though I am very worried my drunkenness and nervous energy made me super obnoxious and annoying.

emil.y, Sunday, 10 July 2016 20:40 (nine years ago)

Ha it's funny I was thinking the same thing about myself, that I was drunk and slightly nervous and had verbal diarrhoea all night.

I meant to say sorry I disappeared without saying goodbye, I was feeling pretty drunk and I didn't want to have to deal with that obnoxious woman again so I just went home. Was probably just as well though because by the time I got home I could barely string a sentence together.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 11 July 2016 10:55 (nine years ago)

What obnoxious woman was that?

Was away at a festival, otherwise I would have made it. Hopefully they will ask me to play there again as I had a lot of fun the last time.

If anyone fancies a dance this coming Friday, we will be dusting our lasers and smoke machine down again and heading to The Green Door Store. We start at 11pm: https://www.facebook.com/events/476168002586383/

two weeks pass...

Hi all, I'm clearing out stuff that's not selling, and anything for sale under £2 on my Discogs is going for free, can't promise there's much great stuff left, but get in touch if you want anything.

It's also a Riviera Breeze Sunday at The Hope. We have Louis Pattison (FACT, Red Bull Music & Wire Magazine) DJing alongside us from 1pm until 8ish: //www.facebook.com/events/270824279957302/

if no-one wants yr robert owens or gene farris i will gladly accept those in exchannge for goodies from my own vertiginous stacks o' shiiiite. will give you cash money for class action too if you still have that?

Roni Griffith - (The Best Part Of) Breakin' Up (12") - i love this btw, someone should sample the shit out of the woodblocks on that if they haven't done so already

Various - Pop (Do We Not Like That?) (CD, Comp, Smplr) - will have this too if still available, this was a permanent fixture in the house cd player when i first moved to brighton. has all the good minxus songs on it iirc

Babes In Toyland - Spanking Machine (CD, Album) - in one section of my brain this is still the best album ever fyi, i will brook no argument

ahh, this is hopeless. i am away on my summer holidays then. for four days. in pevensey. i'm not even leaving the county so i guess i coooould come back but then it would seem that i wasn't on holiday at all. which i barely am anyway. next time maybe?

frank field of the nephilim (NickB), Thursday, 28 July 2016 21:31 (nine years ago)

I will put them aside Nick. Alas the Class Action went today. Was a double. Did toy with keeping it for a while but trying to slim down (very slightly)

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 28 July 2016 21:55 (nine years ago)

thanks matt! am sure i can find you something to fill the gaps back up with in my tottering tower of spare styx and wurzels albums

Why does Brighton hate cats? At this rate we'll have to up sticks to another town that isn't full of animal-hating landlords or be homeless.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 08:25 (nine years ago)

Has anyone been to St Leonard's or Hastings much? Think we might have to give up on this tbh.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 13 August 2016 16:46 (nine years ago)

My (new) rented flat allows pets BUT you have to pay an extra £300 deposit. Ehhh.

lilcraigyboi (Craigo Boingo), Sunday, 14 August 2016 07:33 (nine years ago)

no problems with cats when we rented in roundhill or hollingdean (underrated area imo). maybe things have changed though?

i only know hastings from daytrips. a lot of it is quite dilapidated, partly because of general poverty, partly because of the elements blasting away at it every winter. the old town is the artier more gentrified bit, it's kind of like a fishing village version of the north laine (this is obviously both a good and a bad thing). stayed in a b&b in the green leafy 'burbs before, pretty pleasant but it's definitely where all the money is. things to do there if yr visiting: the jerwood gallery, the caves. camber sands and the dungeness peninsula are not too much further to the east. don't know what the music scene is like but at the weirdish end of the spectrum, david tibet, james blackshaw and the mordant music guy all live there. charity shops are completely shit for records, but there's a cheap secondhand shop near the shopping precinct (lock-up rock), and one of the antique shops in the old town has a bunch of records in the basement (mostly garbage but often some great old beardy folk records). there's a new place called wow & flutter that opened recently, haven't been but if the name is anything to go by it could be worth a look. politically it's very conservative/borderline ukip, but you can sense that there are some pockets of radicalism there. not sure i would choose to live there myself, but you could probably forge a good network of decent folks if that's yr thing.

haven't been to st leonards but the train station is called warrior square , so maybe unjustly i've always assumed it's full of xenophobic old fuckheads

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Sunday, 14 August 2016 11:27 (nine years ago)

seaford might be worth a look at? it's not an enormously exciting place in itself but there's some great countryside round there and it's well within striking distance of brighton for evening trips out etc

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Sunday, 14 August 2016 11:38 (nine years ago)

Craig - where did you find this magical place??

Interesting info re Hastings. We went to Seaford for the afternoon yesterday, it's very nice and we could get something decent for the money but my commute would be almost an hour longer because the trains aren't running at the moment and it's bad enough as it is. Mind you Hastings works out not much better - but at least it's Southeast trains not Southern so maybe trains actually run on that line?

We found a (over budget but it does look nice) place in North Laine that we're viewing tomorrow (just didn't mention pets) but it's not available until 3 days after our moving out date. The new tenant isn't moving in until 2 days after that - but the agency doesn't want to let us overstay, although there is a clause in our lease that says they charge a £50 fee for doing so, so we might be able to just stay there the 3 extra days anyway and tell them to go ahead and charge us the fee? I have to read it properly when I get home.

We've decided we have this week then we're going to have to start looking properly in Seaford/Hastings/Burgess Hill/other places that are not Brighton because we'll only have 3 weeks left then.

This place is some flats in Montpelier, off Upper North Street. I moved in via friends who live there so I don't know how they would advertise it but that was how it broke down. I got it through Halls (next to Fitzherberts on New Road near the Theatre/Pavilion).

lilcraigyboi (Craigo Boingo), Monday, 15 August 2016 23:11 (nine years ago)

That's pretty much where we live now! Don't think we've tried Halls. We're mostly checking the property portal sites and gumtree.

We're trying to get this house we looked at today even though we can't move in til 3 days after we leave so I guess we'll have to put our stuff in storage if we can't work something out, but another couple also wants it and it turns out I have a bad credit score which is awesome since I have never had any bad credit (which is probably the reason why? plus Equicunts have the wrong fucking previous address for me OF COURSE). ARGH.

We put down a holding deposit on this place yesterday, but so did the other couple, and the agency can't get hold of the landlord to choose between us. Nothing is allowed to be easy is it? At least the agency has confirmed they will refund us all our holding deposit tomorrow if they still can't get hold of the landlord by then, because we were a bit worried that we couldn't find any information about how long we have to wait between putting down the holding deposit and getting a contract before we're allowed to walk away (everything says we lose the money if we decline to rent the property rather than the landlord/agency declining to rent to us).

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 17 August 2016 16:06 (nine years ago)

Taking two holding deposits sounds super dodgy to me, is there no limit to how low agents will sink?

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 18 August 2016 10:22 (nine years ago)

Jo and I have just started looking ourselves. Who was it out of interest?

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 18 August 2016 10:23 (nine years ago)

No limit, no.

It was Parks. Still haven't heard from them so I guess it's back to the drawing board.

Thread seems to have become "Colonel Poo moans about his renting woes", sorry about that, but I have at least got my holding deposit refunded (or will have when the money goes into my account, I suppose).

anyone going to cold pumas tomorrow?

Don't think so. Might be going to Penetration on Saturday.

never really got into penetration, but i am a fan of the pauline murray & the invisible girls record

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Thursday, 18 August 2016 14:54 (nine years ago)

I love that album. I went to Lush's warm up gig before their Roundhouse shows earlier this year and Ulrich Schnauss was DJing and he played a song off it. Cool story eh.

Off to Ramsgate for Contra Pop festival tomorrow.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 18 August 2016 15:30 (nine years ago)

I went to Cold Pumas! Was good. Bonus goodness in the form of some sweet acid trax from Timeron (James from The Sticks/Pheromoans).

lilcraigyboi (Craigo Boingo), Sunday, 21 August 2016 18:53 (nine years ago)

This is just impossible. Both my viewings today have been cancelled. First one because someone took it yesterday and the other one because the tenant is refusing to allow access. There's another place we were interested in but the agent can't show it to us til Thursday because a tenant there has shingles. We have less than 3 weeks left. I think it's time to move to Hastings, Brighton doesn't want us.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 08:45 (nine years ago)

If only there was a rolling Hastings thread

imago, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 09:37 (nine years ago)

away to hastings at the weekend

conrad, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 09:48 (nine years ago)

Yeah, landlords in Brighton are notoriously shitty, though I am surprised it's notably worse than London, figured they were about the same.

By the way, if your situation gets more precarious or you have a bit of time between houses with nowhere to stay, you and the missus can kip here if you want. I don't have a spare room, just a double sofabed in the living room, and obviously it doesn't really help with much, but the offer is there if you find yourselves in dire straits. (You can smoke here too.)

emil.y, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 13:34 (nine years ago)

Thanks for the kind offer emil.y. It was beginning to look like we might've needed to take you up on it, but today we put a holding deposit on a place in St Leonard's and assuming our references go through OK we should hopefully sign the contract after the bank holiday.

So that was a short time living in Brighton! Dunno if it's just a bad time of year to move or what, because it wasn't like this in March. But everywhere was either a shithole or snapped up immediately before we could even view it, or available too soon, or too late (really it was weird, stuff was available mid-August, or late-September/October - hardly anything was available early Sept).

This place we're moving to is on the seafront, has FOUR bedrooms and is £200 a month cheaper than our current dump. Now St Leonard's is not Brighton and I'm sure there's sod all to do there, but it's an hour on the train so I'll be back for gigs here and there I expect. Well I have a ticket to The Rebel gig which is after we move, so there's that. I want to see Mystic Inane at the Cowley Club but that's right around the time we'll be moving, so will have to see.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 26 August 2016 18:25 (nine years ago)

two weeks pass...

I no longer live in Brighton. Some of my furniture had to be thrown out when I moved because it was so mouldy. After 6 months. Luckily it was cheap old flat pack crap anyway.

I was reading through the inventory before leaving the mouldy dungeon and saw some clause about the tenant being responsible for any damage caused by mould, how the fuck is that legal that a landlord can rent out a damp property and then try to blame it on the tenant? Oh right because half of MPs are landlords that was it.

Anyone going to see the Rebel tomorrow?

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 13:53 (nine years ago)

What a rip. I'm on my second move of the year. Slightly happier terms because I am moving in with Jo, but Leaders have even charged us a 'Check Out' fee of £102 before we have even moved in, on top of £450 for 'Agency fees' including such asked-for services as signing us up to utility bills (for which they get commission).
