old milwaukee

this used to be one of the best shit beers, at least in the late 90s. Look! http://www.djc.com/news/general/10010416.html

I haven't read at a bar for a while, noticed someone reading at the bar on the weekend during Saturday busy hours. I thought, man, who reads at the bar when it's really noisy, the only person I know who would do that is.... and then I noticed it actually was my ex-girlfriend from a decade ago

This is a wonderful story

"(Think "Sex and the City"
on cable; not HBO.)"

Fool, everyone knows Sex and the City was on HBO. Complaint invalidated

I read in bars all the time -- either waiting for friends or if I lunch alone.

maybe she meant the edited versions from tbs reruns?

xp

mizzell, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 20:26 (nine years ago)

i read at bars with some regularity. usually late afternoon on my day off when places are pretty quiet. especially if there's a backyard.

One of the main things I look forward to in getting out of a dry county is finding a local and doing the hell out of this.

pleas to Nietzsche (WilliamC), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 20:29 (nine years ago)

It's bizarre to me how staring intently at your phone for minutes is cool but reading a mag or novel gets me a couple of second looks from staff and guests

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 20:29 (nine years ago)

have never understood the stigma of reading in bars

maybe I'm not interested in your stupid conversations!

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 20:32 (nine years ago)

Agreed, that makes no sense at all anymore

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 20:35 (nine years ago)

i really don't do this enough.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 20:42 (nine years ago)

reading a book in a crowded bar is madness. there aren't any quiet bars where i live because the only thing for people to do around here is eat and get drunk.

anyway i don't go to bars anymore!!

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 21:02 (nine years ago)

that wasn't bragging i'm just re-affirming my sobriety to myself

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 21:02 (nine years ago)

I was thinking more that it was very dim, crowded, and after 10PM on a Saturday

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 21:31 (nine years ago)

Beer recommendations? That's easy

Sixpoint
Victory
Brooklyn
Dogfish
Captain Lawrence
Long Trail

Basically, anything you've never heard of

calstars, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 23:00 (nine years ago)

I don't really have a problem with the cheep beers Marcos listed. Except for bud and coors, those are pretty rough. Maybe it depends on where you live. I would get Kokanee instead because it has cool packaging/label

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 23:08 (nine years ago)

If you want a shit beer, just buy anything by Pyramid

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 23:10 (nine years ago)

I read books to my child in bars.

Jeff, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 23:26 (nine years ago)

Salsa Golf (Argentinean Ketchup) (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 30 June 2016 01:09 (nine years ago)

calstars, Friday, 8 July 2016 21:26 (nine years ago)

grandpars in bars

F♯ A♯ (∞), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:29 (nine years ago)

in my mind calstars goes drinking at applebee's every Friday at 5pm and is continually astounded by the presence of children

♫ Corbyn's on fire / PLP is terrified ♫ (jim in glasgow), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:33 (nine years ago)

about to meet my partner and 1 yr old at a bar. hope the curmudgeons can handle it.

Salsa Golf (Argentinean Ketchup) (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:34 (nine years ago)

my solution is don't go to bars where people would feel comfortable taking their small children. works for me

♫ Corbyn's on fire / PLP is terrified ♫ (jim in glasgow), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:36 (nine years ago)

sketchy, smelly, loud etc. does the trick

♫ Corbyn's on fire / PLP is terrified ♫ (jim in glasgow), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:37 (nine years ago)

it is true that we only take our 1 yr old to bars that are spacious and good smelling. loud can be ok, though, since it will distract from those moments when a 1 yr old screeches for no reason other than to screech.

Salsa Golf (Argentinean Ketchup) (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:41 (nine years ago)

i always think that jim but u kno this is ilx so i keep quiet

F♯ A♯ (∞), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:41 (nine years ago)

my local-ish is a pleasant family-friendly riverside pub, so I have no problem with kids there at Sunday lunchtime or w/e, but it's also the pub nearest an industrial estate, so I do question the wisdom of parents who bring their sprogs in at 6pm on a Friday night when it's elbow-to-elbow with the post-work crowd

also last time I was in on a quieter weeknight a toddler was making fire engine noises at the top of his lungs for an hour and the parents didn't even try to quiet him down, in fact the dad was encouraging it, which was p. annoying to me. but I know I'm weird for liking my pubs quieter than most

I also wish that people wouldn't send small boys to use the ladies' toilet unattended without at least making sure they don't pee everywhere and do flush and do shut the door so I don't get an accidental glimpse of prepubescent genitalia, cz I'm fairly sure you can be arrested for accidental glimpses now

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 8 July 2016 22:21 (nine years ago)

yeah, that aligns well with my thinking bar loudness actually being good in some cases. tbh we mostly take our son to breweries that have a lot of open space and always well before 7pm, and I get calstars' deal more than I let on.

Salsa Golf (Argentinean Ketchup) (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 8 July 2016 22:26 (nine years ago)

fuck, *aligns well with my thinking bar loudness can actually be good

Salsa Golf (Argentinean Ketchup) (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 8 July 2016 22:27 (nine years ago)

Advantage of summer: the tots' parents are enjoying the outdoor seating and are not in the bar proper

calstars, Sunday, 10 July 2016 21:00 (nine years ago)

Like bars are p low on the list of where i dont need ppl to bring their kids, libraries, cinema, restaurants, public transport all places i need my peace more than in a bar

poor fiddy-less albion (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 July 2016 21:14 (nine years ago)

Public transport? Good luck with that

calstars, Sunday, 10 July 2016 21:27 (nine years ago)

Im not lobbying for it

Well maybe restaurants

poor fiddy-less albion (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 July 2016 21:28 (nine years ago)

Yesterday I was here and an 8 year old, the ward of this loud couple, was lying face down on a bench in the back.

calstars, Saturday, 23 July 2016 18:20 (nine years ago)

Ostensible father was describing an aggressive encounter with someone at a local pool who called him "bro."

calstars, Saturday, 23 July 2016 18:22 (nine years ago)

So kids in bars huh

two weeks pass...

There's an infant sitting at the bar one seat away from me

calstars, Sunday, 7 August 2016 21:18 (nine years ago)

I just gave her a finger wave

calstars, Sunday, 7 August 2016 21:23 (nine years ago)

What a talented infant! You should be grateful.

Jeff, Sunday, 7 August 2016 21:23 (nine years ago)

Bet it can outdrink you

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 August 2016 21:50 (nine years ago)

there was an infant at hip hop show last week. whyyyyyy.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 7 August 2016 21:50 (nine years ago)

I don't understand Corona. It's the beer for people who want to project that They're On Vacation. It tastes like fake lime piss.

Preach. Its the only beer ive puked up mostly due to its grossness (ok i did have 9 of them and i was 24 and 40 pounds lighter)

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 August 2016 22:03 (nine years ago)

Ultimate irony when I bring my boys here when they reach the ripe old ages of 7 and 4

calstars, Sunday, 7 August 2016 22:18 (nine years ago)

If I have one more and squint my eyes, I can almost pretend that this 5 year old is just a dwarf

calstars, Friday, 12 August 2016 22:36 (nine years ago)

why do you need to squint to do that

Neanderthal, Friday, 12 August 2016 22:43 (nine years ago)
