Dear Miss Manners,I live in California, where it is legal and typical for children tosit in the bar area of restaurants with their parents. I am constantlysurprised by the number of families in the bar area (where there arebig screen TVs), when rest of the restaurant dining area is wide open.Is an adult obligated to change their language if a child is seatedbehind them in a bar?
I recently had a "girl's night out" on a Friday night at a localrestaurant/brewery in their separate bar area. The mother of thefamily seated behind us asked us to "tone it down" because her youngchildren could hear our adult conversation. (Think "Sex and the City"on cable; not HBO.) Because the bar was mostly empty and they wereright behind us, the family could hear us regardless of volume.
What is the proper etiquette? Should we have moved or should thefamily have moved? While I understand her position about ourconversation, I'd like to think I can go to a bar and discuss adulttopics. If she wanted to have a "quiet" family dinner, she couldsimply have sat in the quiet, dining area.
Gentle Reader,When Miss Manners entered this august profession, she did not imaginethat she would be called upon to protect salacious talk in barrooms. But she doesn't suppose she can convince you to hold ladylikeconversation, not just for the benefit of any stray barhoppingchildren, but for the sake of decorum.
So she will require only one ladylike moment from you before you getback to your adult conversation. And that is to seem sympathetic whenyou say, "Well, we'll try, but you know, this is a bar, and this sortof thing is bound to keep happening. The children will be betterprotected in the family section." Or you can just say, "Of course,"and move away.

^ thank u usenet
also, drinking and reading in the afternoon is typically a shortcut to a nap/wasted day. but such is life. these are hedonistic times.

"MIss Manners is full of shit. Typical breeder.
"It's a bar what do you expect? We were here first, it's a bar, and the world does not revolve around your vermin. You don't like it, cowboy up and MOVE!"
Pretty easy solution, esp when you consider the breeders were so typical...Pete"

I haven't read at a bar for a while, noticed someone reading at the bar on the weekend during Saturday busy hours. I thought, man, who reads at the bar when it's really noisy, the only person I know who would do that is.... and then I noticed it actually was my ex-girlfriend from a decade ago
This is a wonderful story

Fool, everyone knows Sex and the City was on HBO. Complaint invalidated

I read in bars all the time -- either waiting for friends or if I lunch alone.

One of the main things I look forward to in getting out of a dry county is finding a local and doing the hell out of this.

It's bizarre to me how staring intently at your phone for minutes is cool but reading a mag or novel gets me a couple of second looks from staff and guests

reading a book in a crowded bar is madness. there aren't any quiet bars where i live because the only thing for people to do around here is eat and get drunk.
anyway i don't go to bars anymore!!

that wasn't bragging i'm just re-affirming my sobriety to myself
I was thinking more that it was very dim, crowded, and after 10PM on a Saturday

I don't really have a problem with the cheep beers Marcos listed. Except for bud and coors, those are pretty rough. Maybe it depends on where you live. I would get Kokanee instead because it has cool packaging/label

my solution is don't go to bars where people would feel comfortable taking their small children. works for me
― ♫ Corbyn's on fire / PLP is terrified ♫ (jim in glasgow), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:36 (eight years ago) link
sketchy, smelly, loud etc. does the trick
― ♫ Corbyn's on fire / PLP is terrified ♫ (jim in glasgow), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:37 (eight years ago) link
it is true that we only take our 1 yr old to bars that are spacious and good smelling. loud can be ok, though, since it will distract from those moments when a 1 yr old screeches for no reason other than to screech.

my local-ish is a pleasant family-friendly riverside pub, so I have no problem with kids there at Sunday lunchtime or w/e, but it's also the pub nearest an industrial estate, so I do question the wisdom of parents who bring their sprogs in at 6pm on a Friday night when it's elbow-to-elbow with the post-work crowd
also last time I was in on a quieter weeknight a toddler was making fire engine noises at the top of his lungs for an hour and the parents didn't even try to quiet him down, in fact the dad was encouraging it, which was p. annoying to me. but I know I'm weird for liking my pubs quieter than most
I also wish that people wouldn't send small boys to use the ladies' toilet unattended without at least making sure they don't pee everywhere and do flush and do shut the door so I don't get an accidental glimpse of prepubescent genitalia, cz I'm fairly sure you can be arrested for accidental glimpses now

yeah, that aligns well with my thinking bar loudness actually being good in some cases. tbh we mostly take our son to breweries that have a lot of open space and always well before 7pm, and I get calstars' deal more than I let on.
