Iceland defender Ragnar Sigurdsson has suggested England were complacent before their defeat last night.

Sigurdsson scored Iceland's equalising goal before Kolbeinn Sigthorsson got the winner.

"They thought this would be a walk in the park but we had faith in our ability," Sigurdsson said.

"It went well. We didn't feel that England created any chances. We were just heading away long balls. I wasn't stressed in the second half."

Liking this Faragesque sore winners approach of the Icelandic team.

I dunno, I can totally hear Hart saying that

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Tuesday, 28 June 2016 14:36 (seven years ago) link

That bit about Kane surely can't be genuine, can it?

groovypanda, Tuesday, 28 June 2016 14:36 (seven years ago) link

(xp) Oh absolutely, I said I liked the approach, didn't I? The Kane quote is o_0

They could have been Stackridge. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 June 2016 14:39 (seven years ago) link

It's a head scratcher for sure.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 28 June 2016 14:41 (seven years ago) link

it is fake

We were just heading away long balls. We were just heading away long balls. We were just heading away long balls. We were just heading away long balls. We were just heading away long balls. We were just heading away long balls. We were just heading away long balls. We were just heading away long balls. We were just heading away long balls.

wonder if England fall back on these "tactics" because they're shit or because they believe each other are shit

They do it against top-quality opposition as well. It's because they're shit and just run out of ideas when things are down.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 28 June 2016 15:44 (seven years ago) link

no i mean each player has so little faith in his team-mates to adhere to the plan that they descend into lumpball. i know it's a moot point.

when i read that roy's opening salvo at the post exit presser was "i'm not really sure what i'm doing here" i thought that i was reading a local garda parody.

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 08:54 (seven years ago) link

It was fairly gutless the way he never actually resigned. It was "We'll my contract was up anyway" and "these things happen"

Number None, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 12:23 (seven years ago) link

there's a proper passive-aggressive arrogance to woy beneath the "man out of time" exterior

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 13:08 (seven years ago) link

the weakness in roy's character comes from having spent too much of his career abroad. he was never truly suffused with the indomitable english spirit. his failure was inevitable.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 13:12 (seven years ago) link

not to go too talksport on it, but to act like he's had a rough time with the media or give this "finally i'm free" type press conference is wrong for a guy who got such an easy ride. he earned 3.5m a year and compared to past england managers he got off incredibly lightly, after the worst world cup performance for years. the least he could do is go and talk, for the final time, about why he did such a shit job.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 13:18 (seven years ago) link

Unsatisfying he's not properly explained his 'tactical' approach, the odd subs etc.

During the game I found myself wishing there was a Zidane 21st Century Portrait version of Rooney vs Iceland, the Vine only reinforces that desire.

At least Portugal can't resort to killing the game like against Croatia now.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 30 June 2016 19:05 (seven years ago) link

yeah perfect start entertainment-wise

Pat Umunna Glass (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 30 June 2016 19:08 (seven years ago) link

p terrible by the portugal full back, but nice goal after that

pandemic, Thursday, 30 June 2016 19:10 (seven years ago) link

This was the least enticing of all the QFs so that goal totally made this worth paying attention to.
