LG otm up here, Rooney moving mostly between the back four is amazing

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:28 (seven years ago) link

This is one of the least hateful England teams I can remember and going into the tournament I, an extremely embittered Scottish nationalist, wished them well for the first time ever, but if there was ever a time that England deserved to be beaten by Iceland in a major footballing tournament to really hammer home the gulf between the nation's self-perception and its actual clout for non-footballing reasons this is it.

The Nickelbackean Ethics (jim in glasgow), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link

lol I can't believe England conceded the first directly from a Dave Challinor spesh

calzino, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:33 (seven years ago) link

Clive now talking about England being a goal down against San Marino way back when and coming back to win 7-1 "it may just take a while though" jfc these guys just do not get it

squad may be likeable enough this time out but everything else about the presentation is as loathsome as it ever was, and it gets worse whenever the pundits think we're up against "inferior" opposition. especially jarring in the context of the last few days

Windsor Davies, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:34 (seven years ago) link

I like my football like I like my politics, a completely uncoordinated shambles.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

tyldsley is another level of insufferable tho. his tight-lipped clucking is from another era of commentary.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:39 (seven years ago) link

(xps) This is so uncoordinated that Rooney could be the next PM.

I'm part of the 48.1 percent (snoball), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:45 (seven years ago) link

if Iceland manage a 1-3 on a counter it's over. (though 3-2 still more likely, i think)

Ludo, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

Just in. OMGWTF.

They could have been Stackridge. (Tom D.), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

never wanted my own country to lose more than i do tonight

Windsor Davies, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link

i hope they do us 5-1

Windsor Davies, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link

how can a half with three goals and a penalty have no injury time

reader, if you love him so much why don't you marry him? (DJ Mencap), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link

Rooney negotiating a post-Brexit settlement with the likes of Juncker is a perfect career move. No more 'experts'. xps

xyzzzz__, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link

I have no problem with Sterling but he is the apotheosis of a culture that tolerates aaron lennon and theo walcott as professional athletes that have any business on a football pitch.

Please please please let barca believe the kyle walker hype. Useless at everything but running between areas where he is useless

Could another defeat for Europe's elites be on the cards here?

They could have been Stackridge. (Tom D.), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:49 (seven years ago) link

Likely not.

But this mismash of spurs players without spurs centre halves or inside forwards is a failed experiment.

EU don't negotiate with errorists (darraghmac), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:50 (seven years ago) link

can't believe they said "rooney urging his players to move the ball more quickly" without bursting into laughter or breaking down in tears

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:51 (seven years ago) link

Rooneys not even fat now

Not even fat

EU don't negotiate with errorists (darraghmac), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:54 (seven years ago) link

Idiots commentating on 5 live were arguing about what counts as 'a youth'.

inside, skeletons are always inside, that's obvious. (dowd), Monday, 27 June 2016 19:59 (seven years ago) link

iit is actually hilarious to watch rooney getting on the ball deep, then doing some urgent-looking work on it, dribbling a bit, putting his foot on top of the ball, before passing it laterally to kyle walker.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

"If he does not turn this around, talk abut the sword of Damocles - he'll be falling on that sword."

ITV panel did not just ask "does he drop Joe Hart for the quarter final?"

like I just saw claimed

did they?

reader, if you love him so much why don't you marry him? (DJ Mencap), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

ahaha xp

imago, Monday, 27 June 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

Just stop showing England games on ITV

PLEASE!

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

"Should Hodgson drop Hart for the Quarter Final?" seems a somewhat presumptuous question

groovypanda, Monday, 27 June 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

hence my amused disbelief

reader, if you love him so much why don't you marry him? (DJ Mencap), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:03 (seven years ago) link

how hard did tyldsley have to work to create the voice he has? he sounds like he's got the back of his throat clenched as tightly as possible.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:03 (seven years ago) link

"He's made amends with that save there"

Errrrrrrrr, nah.

They could have been Stackridge. (Tom D.), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:12 (seven years ago) link

Hodgson set to be the third manager in three years to lose his job thanks to blind loyalty to Wayne Rooney

seriously, what does he have on these people?

Sterling probably the worst player i remember in an England shirt

Windsor Davies, Monday, 27 June 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link

rooney to centre mid and his own petulant justifications of it are some of the most wild falsehoods in football for years. like "rooney must play because he's rooney, so if rooney is no longer rooney due to losing his ability, then we must change what rooney is so rooney still plays"

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link

it's bizarre

surely Mourinho doesn't fall for it though

Number None, Monday, 27 June 2016 20:20 (seven years ago) link

Rooney must come off, he's dreadful here

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:20 (seven years ago) link

Thats a real immobile cock vs irresistable force

EU don't negotiate with errorists (darraghmac), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:21 (seven years ago) link

how many times have england hit a pass to one of the full backs that's too long and goes out over the line? endless.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:22 (seven years ago) link

good on that ref for deciding that Rooney on the ball 30 yards out is no kind of advantage at all

Windsor Davies, Monday, 27 June 2016 20:22 (seven years ago) link

lol

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:23 (seven years ago) link

Horribly, I still expect England to win this.

Laughably bad free kick from Kane

Lionel Richie the Wardrobe (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:23 (seven years ago) link

felt no cognitive dissonance in laughing at Kane's hopelessness there

transition from complacency of "ok what day are we playing France in the QF" to tetchiness of "ok this isn't going quite how we'd planned" to "DON'T PANIC CAPTAIN MAINWARING WE MIGHT GET A GOAL HERE IF WE'RE LUCKY" is reminding me of something tho i can't think what

Windsor Davies, Monday, 27 June 2016 20:25 (seven years ago) link

odds on Vardy getting a single touch before the final whistle?

Number None, Monday, 27 June 2016 20:25 (seven years ago) link
