not getting the Embolo hype based on this tournament

Number None, Sunday, 19 June 2016 20:24 (seven years ago) link

the english commentators note that there was severe flooding in northern france recently but even so it is really bad

nakhchivan, Sunday, 19 June 2016 20:26 (seven years ago) link

shaqiri isn't very good based on this

imago, Sunday, 19 June 2016 20:27 (seven years ago) link

well paul pogba must be 190lbs so embolo's strong if nothing else, though yes it is quite possible that there is nothing else

nakhchivan, Sunday, 19 June 2016 20:27 (seven years ago) link

imago, Sunday, 19 June 2016 20:55 (seven years ago) link

idk i watched an espn stream the other day and it had stewart robson on it

nakhchivan, Sunday, 19 June 2016 20:56 (seven years ago) link

So how come in the Round of 16 some group winners get to play a 3rd place team, whereas a couple have to face off with a 2nd place team? How has this been decided?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Sunday, 19 June 2016 20:57 (seven years ago) link

squad with the worst mustaches get the 2nd place opponents

Neanderthal, Sunday, 19 June 2016 20:58 (seven years ago) link

ian darke is quite good at ensuring stewart robson doesn't say very much

imago, Sunday, 19 June 2016 21:00 (seven years ago) link

So it'll be England vs Albania if we can beat Slovakia tomorrow night then? Works for me

Windsor Davies, Sunday, 19 June 2016 21:03 (seven years ago) link

Well won't the C and D groups need to finish to establish the final 3rd place team?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Sunday, 19 June 2016 21:11 (seven years ago) link

right you are! i thought i heard one of the commentators saying that when Albania took the lead and blithely accepted it without thinking about it, obviously there's no guarantee that Albania are through. so it'll be England against Albania or the 3rd maybe place team from either groups C or D. So almost anyone other than Ukraine then.

Windsor Davies, Sunday, 19 June 2016 21:18 (seven years ago) link

Not the greatest of games there imo

Master of Treacle, Sunday, 19 June 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

Rooney wants manager who keeps picking him to stay

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36572045

groovypanda, Monday, 20 June 2016 06:56 (seven years ago) link

Love it when players who shouldn't be trusted to pick their own dinners have opinions about team selection, tactics etc. Lot of bullshit hype around Rooney's 2 performances, as if not completely fucking up was laudable in itself. He still slows the team down, especially with those long, hanging crossfield passes that do nothing except allow the opposition defence a few seconds to stabilise.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 20 June 2016 08:53 (seven years ago) link

think he's been alright there, not twpirlo obv but yknow. those long passes are symptom not cause imo, the side's movement is so lacking that the hail mary is more attractive an option than it ever ought to be

r|t|c, Monday, 20 June 2016 09:09 (seven years ago) link

none of the praise has been accounting for the fact that neither Wales nor Russia saw fit to press him whatsoever, any decent midfield would have him for breakfast.

It's not necessarily that he's choosing the wrong option every time, the problem is more that he doesn't seem capable of sweeping the ball around at pace. Those leisurely floated balls are so easy to read.

Unlikely as it seems I think the best thing that could happen tonight would be for wilshere to come in and play a blinder to make himself undroppable for the next game

Windsor Davies, Monday, 20 June 2016 09:12 (seven years ago) link

I think I'd allow him "alright" and maybe there's nobody in the squad who would obviously be more than alright but it's still unseemly crowbarring him in like this just because of alleged talismanic powers imo

Noodle Vague, Monday, 20 June 2016 09:24 (seven years ago) link

The thing is you can just tell that Rooney reads the game better than most of the other England players, you can see what he's trying to do, but he doesn't really have the pace or control or the experience to execute it properly. He's been doing alright, and will probably continue to do alright against Slovakia, but it won't work against one of the best midfields.

A fully match-fit Wilshere would probably do better in that role but it's not going to happen.

Matt DC, Monday, 20 June 2016 12:33 (seven years ago) link

Those diagonal passes might work with really lethal wide players but if you're playing them to Sterling all the time you might as well be hoofing it into the stands.

Matt DC, Monday, 20 June 2016 12:34 (seven years ago) link

a bunch of them have been more horizontal than diagonal, which doesn't help

Noodle Vague, Monday, 20 June 2016 12:43 (seven years ago) link

but yeah I can see a "Rooney is the best approximation of a player we don't actually have" argument

Noodle Vague, Monday, 20 June 2016 12:44 (seven years ago) link

Rooney also out of the team for tonight, along with Kane, Alli, Sterling, Walker and Rose. Vardy, Studge, Wilshere, Henderson, Clyne and Bertrand in.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 20 June 2016 13:29 (seven years ago) link

No Rashford? I'm out

Number None, Monday, 20 June 2016 15:42 (seven years ago) link
