Pretty tight stuff

what a waste

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:40 (eight years ago) link

infuriating - there were unmarked runners

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:41 (eight years ago) link

The sheer pointlessness of this game mirrors the void inside me and of life in general way too much to deal with right now.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:43 (eight years ago) link

quite enjoyed the 2nd half tbh

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:44 (eight years ago) link

Not seen Germany being this useless and shite since Dunkirk

They won that.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:49 (eight years ago) link

took a week but we finally got a nil-nil

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:50 (eight years ago) link

@Tom D: Hitler let the allied forces "off the hook", failed to finish them off when he could've, which proved to be a massive error of judgement later on. But whatevs.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:59 (eight years ago) link

really hoping england don't get kicked out the euros

Why, who do you support

Daithi Bowsie (darraghmac), Thursday, 16 June 2016 21:14 (eight years ago) link

If England win the group there's a good chance they'll be playing Northern Ireland in the next round. No idea what the crowd situation will be like for that one.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 June 2016 09:30 (seven years ago) link

surely the northern irish fans would have to cheer for england

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 17 June 2016 09:32 (seven years ago) link

That's the thing, as usual with Norn Iron, it's more complicated than that. I'm not sure how NI fans would interact with English fans but I'm pretty sure they want their team to stuff England.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Friday, 17 June 2016 09:34 (seven years ago) link

i wouldn't have thought there'd be trouble. i mean ni/poland seemed to go fine.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 17 June 2016 09:42 (seven years ago) link

Most of the really nasty stuff seemed to happen when England played the Republic.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 June 2016 09:43 (seven years ago) link

think republic/ni in the 94 qualifiers was rough enough too.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 17 June 2016 09:44 (seven years ago) link

Ha, no surprise there!

a guy (catholic/republican) i went to college with told this story of being at the game in windsor park with his dad and brothers, when alan mcloughlin scored in the last minute to equalise and qualify ireland for usa 94. he said their dad clamped his hands over their mouths and they basically couldn't cheer or react. they silently walked out to the car at the end, like all pent up with that incredible wild joy of last-minute glory, they even had to stay quiet as they were driving home, then eventually they got to a safer area and their dad just started beeping the horn and they all went absolutely crazy.

must have been such a strange time.

I think in years gone by, England would have been the No. 1 team NI fans would love to beat - not unlike Scotland fans, though obviously not to quite the same extent. Not sure how true that is anymore. Not sure if that, "We're British and the trouble with you English is you aren't British enough", attitude is as prevalent in, uh, certain communities. This is complicated by the fact that some Rangers fans often make a big song and dance about supporting England these days - though I'm not sure that they aren't doing that just to annoy everyone else in Scotland. (Note: it is believed some NI fans could also be Rangers fans.)

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Friday, 17 June 2016 09:56 (seven years ago) link

there must be some republican/catholic ni fans these days, right? i'd say it could be growing a little bit even.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 17 June 2016 09:58 (seven years ago) link

Oh yeah, I'm sure there are and I'm sure the numbers are growing and I'm also pretty certain they won't be the ones you have to worry about re: violence, disorder and general mayhem.

Live from a TGI Fridays in what must be one of Cyprus' biggest shopping malls. Relax (Don't Do It) on the PA. Well in, ILX

So far it seems like Zlatan is already frustrated. Remember his backheel lob back in 2002 or whenever it was?

imago, Friday, 17 June 2016 13:05 (seven years ago) link

Oof, delicious turn from whoever that Italian forward was

imago, Friday, 17 June 2016 13:20 (seven years ago) link

florenzi i think, delayed the cross too long tho'

pandemic, Friday, 17 June 2016 13:23 (seven years ago) link

watching italy's back 3 this tournament so far is a bit of an eye opener after a season or more of watching lfc games. these guys really really know what they're doing and seem to like doing it, who'd of thunk it?

pandemic, Friday, 17 June 2016 13:25 (seven years ago) link

dowie just likened the italian defenders to tawny owls

pandemic, Friday, 17 June 2016 13:43 (seven years ago) link

yeah the space liverpool allow in their own box compared to chiellini and co...

can't do the mental arithmetic to work out what's best for ireland here. seems like it's too early to say really.

2004! The delightful Euro tournament where Italy, Sweden and Denmark were in group together, and played three draws, culminating with the Sweden-Denmark 2-2 draw which was exactly the result that sent Italy home. An Italy-Danish friend of mine still refuses to believe we didn't cheat on that one :)

Frederik B, Friday, 17 June 2016 13:49 (seven years ago) link

Oh yeah. They gave Maniche goal of the tournament iirc. Zlatan's was at least five times better

imago, Friday, 17 June 2016 13:51 (seven years ago) link

one of the great joy to pain football moments ever.

not as good as the man united one though obviously, given the relative decency of the personnel.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 17 June 2016 14:04 (seven years ago) link

no XD for the tawny owl ref xp?

Japanese Donald Trump Commercialトランプ2016 (nakhchivan), Friday, 17 June 2016 14:06 (seven years ago) link

darkly mutters something about the standard of crossing

imago, Friday, 17 June 2016 14:10 (seven years ago) link

Italy win surely the best for Ireland? Italy look like theyre playing for a draw here. They must fancy their chances against Ireland

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Friday, 17 June 2016 14:10 (seven years ago) link

oh uh yeah XD that do

imago, Friday, 17 June 2016 14:10 (seven years ago) link

why is there no ILF thread where you compare football players to avians?

Japanese Donald Trump Commercialトランプ2016 (nakhchivan), Friday, 17 June 2016 14:14 (seven years ago) link

noting that no less an ILX favourite and european championships luminary than andrei arshavin himself was routinely likened to a strigiform back in the day

Japanese Donald Trump Commercialトランプ2016 (nakhchivan), Friday, 17 June 2016 14:15 (seven years ago) link

not sure, could be a thing, zlatan is a bit heronlike

got some gr8 holiday snaps of avians including what might be a saker falcon

imago, Friday, 17 June 2016 14:18 (seven years ago) link

daniel sturridge is a jay for sure

Japanese Donald Trump Commercialトランプ2016 (nakhchivan), Friday, 17 June 2016 14:21 (seven years ago) link

hodgson owl has been done so often that i think it even made the daily mail

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 17 June 2016 14:24 (seven years ago) link

great call on sturridge

this match is abject

imago, Friday, 17 June 2016 14:25 (seven years ago) link

buffon could be a skua

imago, Friday, 17 June 2016 14:28 (seven years ago) link

ibra misses from a yard, offside luckily for him

pandemic, Friday, 17 June 2016 14:28 (seven years ago) link

So bored. I actually just trying to think of footballer-bird puns, but coming up short.

inside, skeletons are always inside, that's obvious. (dowd), Friday, 17 June 2016 14:28 (seven years ago) link
