have a feeling we'll remember today as the day european football sat up and took notice of our feisty island nation

― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 16 June 2016 14:58 (2 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Today will be remembered for other reasons.

Sorry, but.

Mark G, Thursday, 16 June 2016 17:23 (eight years ago) link

What was all that with that supposed substitution?

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 17:49 (eight years ago) link

wellity wellity wellity

Terminator Brexit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 16 June 2016 17:52 (eight years ago) link

Ukraine were good against Germany but this has been an awful performance. NI have been great value.

Commentator on ITV going nuts.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Thursday, 16 June 2016 17:52 (eight years ago) link

Well done the Norn Iron.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 June 2016 17:52 (eight years ago) link

Didn't see the NI game as got distracted by subsequent events, but I thought that - free kick aside - Bale was mostly uninvolved and that might actually have been down to smart tactical instructions from Roy. There seemed to be long periods, especially in the first half, where England were playing these pedestrian little triangles around their left side rather than crossing to the player in acres of space on the other side of the pitch, and I suspect that was to keep the ball as far away from Bale as possible.

First half was mostly shite obviously, and I feel bad for Kane, but England were so much better with Studge and Vardy on in the second half.

Real Championship vibe to the whole game, mind.

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 June 2016 18:57 (eight years ago) link

yeah not a great game/performance but in a classroom full of massively over-excited 17 year-olds shouting and booing i wasn't really concentrating on the finer points of the game

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:07 (eight years ago) link

have the vague impression that germany usually struggle in their 2nd game in a tournament but always win their 1st and 3rd, have no idea if it's true or not.

surprised gotze makes the starting 11.

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:24 (eight years ago) link

Just checked WC 2014 games and yeah Germany thrashed Portugal 4-0 first game then drew 2-2 with Ghana, then won 1-0 against USA

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:33 (eight years ago) link

remember the 2nd half of that ghana game being great

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:35 (eight years ago) link

'Andy, what's Goetze's best position?'
*defeaning silence*
*Townsend glares at co-commentator*

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:36 (eight years ago) link

This is trite garbage Germany have shown for nearly two years now. Poland the perfect opponent to make this dull as ditch water.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:45 (eight years ago) link

yeah but good for doing some washing up/making a big scampi and chip sandwich

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:47 (eight years ago) link

That is true. I wouldn't mind such a fine sandwich meself.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:48 (eight years ago) link

the low murmur of a bored-shitless crowd was quite ambient

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:48 (eight years ago) link

i am a sucker for a dour arm-wrestle tho

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:49 (eight years ago) link

italy, spain and croatia the cream of the crop so far, but who knows what they'll look like in their 2nd games

Disinclination Loops

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:53 (eight years ago) link

There are various reasons not all connected to football but this is a shit tournament so far.

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:55 (eight years ago) link

some sweet goals but not many good quality matches p much as expected really

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:56 (eight years ago) link

there are no shit tournaments for me and i find the lack of an obvious frontrunner pretty interesting. there's not been a lot of "beautiful game" happening sure, but these things run in cycles maybe

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:57 (eight years ago) link

Hitting even harder that despite this being an utter shite game I can't bring myself to turn off the telly to finish this important job I'm working on. Not even did the dishes like NV.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:57 (eight years ago) link

i could hear the TV from the kitchen tbf

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:58 (eight years ago) link

Don't think it's a shit tournament though. Since I care -100 about qualifications, I like seeing more nations in this tournament, which seems a minority opinion. It's a nice tournament. This game, tonight, is just shite.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:59 (eight years ago) link

Xp you jammy bastard

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:59 (eight years ago) link

lol forgot those posts

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:00 (eight years ago) link

that was great from boateng

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:15 (eight years ago) link

Im with lbi. Ive been enjoying the tournament so far

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:20 (eight years ago) link

the tournament lacking miroslav klose, seems rude to have it without him.

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:22 (eight years ago) link

Not seen Germany being this useless and shite since Dunkirk

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:23 (eight years ago) link

(Sorry)

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:23 (eight years ago) link

do you work for The Sun?

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:23 (eight years ago) link

ah milik air shot

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:25 (eight years ago) link

Been a big fan of Germany for the last ten years. Feared already - noted somewhere above - that I'd thought they'd have a tough tournament this time round. And still think it was a huge mistake of Low to leave Reus out.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:26 (eight years ago) link

Klose sorely missed indeed

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:26 (eight years ago) link

Reus does not exist

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:27 (eight years ago) link

Gomez will fix everything.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:28 (eight years ago) link

Have to feel sorry for Milik. Never undisputed at Ajax, but the board all to keen for him to play well so they can sell him for an outrageous price. It's just not happening.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:29 (eight years ago) link

gomez has seen off the pretenders to his 'super mario' crown gotze and balotelli, only mandzukic remains

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:29 (eight years ago) link

It's amazing how many of their chances in both games have fallen to Milik rather than Lewandowski.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:30 (eight years ago) link

Harsh on Mario Perez tbf xp

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:31 (eight years ago) link

Xp I agree! That is odd. In both games.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:31 (eight years ago) link

isn't that because of lewandowski?
xp

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:32 (eight years ago) link

ie the defence is keyed on him

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:32 (eight years ago) link

Might be

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:34 (eight years ago) link

can nobody in europe cross the fucking ball accurately anymore?

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:34 (eight years ago) link

so far the most frustrating match
