also wish they'd mimic remote in iTunes and show how many items a playlist has
― cozwn, Friday, 15 August 2008 07:08 (seventeen years ago)
Simplify seems great, although it looks like the server is struggling to pick up my entire library, it keeps giving up at around 1000 files. Grr.
― JimD, Friday, 15 August 2008 09:20 (seventeen years ago)
SimplifyMedia doesn't seem to work that well...I haven't tried it off of my own wifi (or on 3G or Edge) but here at home my iTunes library kind of choked it and it seemed like it was a resource hog. I'm wondering what sort of battery drainer it would be to stream while, say, riding down the highway for a couple of hours.
― Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 15 August 2008 11:24 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i had trouble getting it past 10,000 files - i'm not sure if they're OK with huge libraries.
― toby, Friday, 15 August 2008 11:45 (seventeen years ago)
Streaming it through work wifi now though, and it's working really nicely. If I can get it to recognise the rest of my library tonight, that's going to inspire me to build a dinky, low power, always-on media streamer for home, I think.
― JimD, Friday, 15 August 2008 12:28 (seventeen years ago)
Ok, from their blog:
The application isn’t perfect yet, and there are two items many of you mentioned we plan to address soon. First is album art and lyrics truncation - sometimes they don’t load completely and we are not yet sure why. Second, we don’t let you know when libraries are still syncing. Some files are available for playback but we should tell you that more are on the way.
As our testers discovered, the best thing to do is to let Simplify Media build its index for a while after your initial install. After that, most information is cached for fast startup.
― JimD, Friday, 15 August 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)
Oof, iphone battery life is now RINSED though, I've gone from about 80% to 20% in about 90 mins of streaming.
― JimD, Friday, 15 August 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)
I give up on this app Jim. It is constantly buffering, it basically locks up my iPhone. I'm assuming this is largely because it can't grasp the reality of 35,000 songs.
― Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 15 August 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)
damn, my iphone is stuck in endless backup mode again...
― s1ocki, Friday, 15 August 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)
I've been using an official AV cable to do iphone>iplayer>av cable>tv, and it works really nicely. But, you know, it's a bit inelegant having the phone wired into the tv without a dock to sit it in. So I bought a 3G phone dock yesterday...and video through doesn't work! Why the fuck would they do that?? Makes no sense at all, to me.
― JimD, Saturday, 16 August 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)
Don, maybe this was the problem: http://www.simplifymedia.com/blog/?p=53
― HI DERE, Sunday, 17 August 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)
SM is working great for me. There are a few glitches here and there, but they seem to be related to the network rather than the app. My windows client has 29k songs in the library, and I've been able to access every one I've tried ON IPHONE, so long as my 3G network is functioning properly. I'm kind of astonished with this app.
― J, Sunday, 17 August 2008 23:40 (seventeen years ago)
I'll plan on getting SimplifyMedia once I can get an iPhone that has as long a battery life as an iPod. For now, I can live with the 16 gig limit for the culled playlists I synced.

Hey, they updated Cube Runner!
― kingfish, Monday, 18 August 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)
First app I've actually paid for: Tuner Internet Radio.
First song was Duran Duran 'The Reflex' so money well spent x 2163412847.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 09:36 (seventeen years ago)
installed simplify this AM, oddly, before seeing this thread ... thought i should get in quickly while the iPhone app is still free!
i'll let it have another shot at indexing, because it really didn't seem too happy the first time i tried. the main problem for me will be -- TRAGIC ANALLY RETENTIVE BASTARD ALERT -- the lack of last.fm functionality: ie i won't be able to scrobble anything i play through it :)
― grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 10:58 (seventeen years ago)
hmm. doesn't want to get beyond 2,919 files -- the library contains > 8000.
looking at the log, i see it's reporting "error calling stat() on file" and "skipping" a lot of them. WTF?
i'd send them a bug report, but they seem awfully keen to see the entire log, and you know what? i'm not all that happy about handing over a catalogue of all the music files on my HD :)
― grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 12:28 (seventeen years ago)
SM is working great for me, with about 4,280 files.
― Pancakes Hackman, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 12:35 (seventeen years ago)
ah, hang on. wonder what happens if i tell it to share folders rather than iTunes libraries?
let's see ...
― grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)
... up to 3630 already, and (i hope) still counting.
― grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)
SM is a fucking resource hog. In idle--i.e. when no iPhone is connected to my library--it is choking down 18 threads at a time and adversely affecting my system.
― Dandy Don Weiner, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)
i just know i'm never going to use this. but still. nice idea.
― grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)
also, I think my problem is that most of my tracks on iTunes are in Apple Lossless, as opposed to crappy 128 MP3s. Those are big files to push, which is why my buffering times are insane.
― Dandy Don Weiner, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)
i dropped them a line anyway and mentioned the problems i'd had; i also asked about scrobbling support. apparently that'll come in a later update of the iPhone app, which would make this totally fuckin' awesome.
― grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)
Autumn, why are you posting some Cleveland person's phone number on ILX?
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)
being not american your post makes 0 sense to me
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)
admit it. your telephone only dials to Cleveland.

hi alison
hey jaymc, I'm about to call you ok?

2 Across is a really good crossword puzzle app where you can download puzzles past and present from the WSJ, the NYT (with subscription), the Onion, thinks.com and several other places. The one thing not explained properly is how to enter a word. If you tap twice really fast, that brings out the typewriter. You can also also customize what is revealed, checked, and what isn't at your own leisure. There. Have fun.-- Mackro Mackro, Friday, August 1, 2008 8:31 PM (2 weeks ago) Bookmark Link

Mackro, this was built by someone I know! She has seemed very excited lately about it getting featured and downloaded.
― nabisco, Thursday, 21 August 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)
That's "someone I know" not as in "someone who works as a programmer," but rather "a very smart person who evidently just decided to sit down and make a crossword app because she wanted one"
― nabisco, Thursday, 21 August 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, she just told me after I called her, Nabisco. she's really sweet.
― Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 21 August 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)
(hat tip to jaymc for telling me her phone number over the phone)
― Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 21 August 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)
I pretty much just checked the thread to see if you were talking about that app, so I have no idea how the calling-people joke or non-joke functions
― nabisco, Friday, 22 August 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)
It's a joke, and reading above, it sounds really catty, which wasn't my intention at all. The "joke" was that the new White Pages app mentioned right above would be able to reverse search phone numbers based on ILX user names. I used jaymc as an example in an attempt to keep the joke running, but it didn't pan out. So I'll just kill the joke here.
I still really enjoy 2 Across, and your friend is awesome for making it. :)
― Mackro Mackro, Friday, 22 August 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)
I've got 2 Across also and like it a lot. Your friend rules.

is anyone getting errors sticking new versions of apps on?
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)
Been using it solidly for the past couple of weeks.

I have no problems with it that make it unuseable.
― Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)
A crash during the 2.02 firmware upgrade last night caused me to lose all my apps. :( But I was able to get most of them back, so hooray. Plus, 2.02 really did improve my 3G connectivity, so double hooray!
