Weird Al style parodies are probably his best stuff and I always wish like Jack White or Devo or whoever would bust em out for their live show
― queen elseq of ærendelle (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 June 2016 12:16 (ten years ago)
I dunno a lot of people get into Weird Al at a young age before they've heard the stuff he's parodying from, seems pretty normal to me
I mean I remember hearing "Satisfaction" on the radio and being amused that someone would cover the Devo song
― frogbs, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 13:14 (ten years ago)
Am I going to be the first person to reference the 'inverse weird al' song on 30 rock?

that seems to be the case
― qualx, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 18:24 (ten years ago)
I suspected as much.

so like apparently once information started coming out that the pulse shooter might have been a muslim /r/news locked every thread on the topic and started banning ppl who tried to start new threads. currently the only place to discuss the shooting on reddit is the donald trump campaign subreddit which has multiple threads on the front page bc that's the only game in town. it's like a metaphor for my worst fear about donald trump becoming president of the united states.
― Mordy, Sunday, 12 June 2016 14:53 (ten years ago)
I bet we're missing out on some insightful and totally-not-racist commentary.
― inside, skeletons are always inside, that's obvious. (dowd), Sunday, 12 June 2016 15:03 (ten years ago)
regardless - biggest shooting in US history, second biggest terrorist attack, you have to give ppl an opportunity to talk about it
― Mordy, Sunday, 12 June 2016 15:08 (ten years ago)
Sure - and people were. I was reading the thread earlier. Once it gets swamped by racists (which is not the same thing as it emerging it might be a Muslim, though they're connected) what were they meant to do? Their posts were against the rules, and there was no way of controlling it. The Donald should have been shut down already.
― inside, skeletons are always inside, that's obvious. (dowd), Sunday, 12 June 2016 15:11 (ten years ago)
they could have modded it extensively within the thread. shutting down the venue was a huge self goal.
― Mordy, Sunday, 12 June 2016 15:13 (ten years ago)
I think there just aren't enough people to control it. I know it comes up a lot on reddit, but sometimes threads are dangerous and unmoddable - if a group of fascists take it on themselves to spam an incorrect name blaming someone, for example, or directly advocating violence, they can overwhelm the mods.
― inside, skeletons are always inside, that's obvious. (dowd), Sunday, 12 June 2016 15:19 (ten years ago)
Yeah I don't think Reddit has the staff:user ratio to actually have a moderated conversation.
― Sean, let me be clear (silby), Sunday, 12 June 2016 15:30 (ten years ago)
Which isn't to say that it won't have bad consequences; the 4chan type crowd will rally around anything they perceive as censorship. It's just hard to see an alternative to turning the site over to nazis (which happens a sub at a time).

The Donald has been particularly toxic. It actually started earlier, initially it was the well-documented attempts of Stormfront to brigade reddit, apparently they found quite a few sympathetic (although "ironic") eyes coming from /pol/ along with the latent Islamophobia coming out of the atheist community that had been part of reddit for a long time. With the advent of the migrant crisis in Europe all of these disparate hater groups found a strong locus for their bigotry, and /r/European was the initial rallying ground for them. Somehow The Donald has been much more successful at recruiting clueless suburban children/manchildren to the white supremacist cause though. Personally I'm a bit prone to conspiracy theory and suspect part of the skyrocketing popularity of the The Donald can be attributed to an organized campaign to subsidize hate speech online. That's mostly baseless speculation though.
The plain fact of the matter though is that there has been an organized campaign of recruitment on reddit for years now, and at this point it is finally a strong enough presence to significantly alter the overall character of the site. BTW /r/news was kind of a racist shithole from day 1, I guess the mods are finally waking up to the grown up face of the assbaby they made.

Mankind, which in Homer’s time was an object of contemplation for the Olympian gods, now is one for itself. Its self-alienation has reached such a degree that it can experience its own ironic shitposting as an aesthetic pleasure of the first order.

Reading veyne's 'did the Greeks believe in their myths' in he pub at the moment, and your post caused a weird mergerIn my head between the book and ilx.

Some time within the last 24 hours they made some kind of change that immediately dropped all the_donald posts off the front page. Like, so abruptly that I refreshed my browser and the by-now normal sight of a dozen plus the_donald posts on the front page dropped to zero. I approve.

Is there something funny and typically Reddit-ish about that post? It looks to me like it's just asking an interesting question in a straightforward way.

lol probably the director just had a bad experience with a previous production where the actors were being actors and all fucking each other and this was his idea to put an end to that
