Guy on Jeopardy lost

jmm, Saturday, 28 May 2016 00:08 (ten years ago)

Maybe Alex had an English lit FJ category intentionally planted when he saw that he was gonna have a English lit prof on...

My former coworker was on today but she is not an English prof so I guess she didn't win.

i hate myself for sounding like such a soft touch but that really wasn't "hilarious" at all. trebek is a cock.

evol j, Thursday, 13 October 2016 13:41 (nine years ago)

found it very hilarious tbh

Video removed, what was in it?

nickn, Thursday, 13 October 2016 18:38 (nine years ago)

the contestant says she likes "nerdcore" hiphop which she states is hiphop for geeks and people who can't get dates. trebek says "so, losers basically". she says "sure".

I like how this thread got revived for that and not for Seth winning a shitload of money. Then again he was super low-key and every episode I'd sort of realize late in the game that he was cleaning up.

My wife kept referring to him as Gavin:

joygoat, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:36 (nine years ago)

i was a fan of seth. he's one of those dudes - definitely witnessed on the show before - who mispronounces a lot of things, like his whole experience of life to this point has been out of books

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 14 October 2016 01:29 (nine years ago)

Seth was a powerhouse but his personality was so limited it was difficult to get excited about him. He just didn't get answers wrong! Worth noting that he ended his run on a right answer and a conservative bet in final jeopardy. He coulda gone on indefinitely if he had been more cutthroat!

I did my audition today as the only oddball looking guy amongst 18 mostly physically unexceptional and business suited white dudes. I asked Maggie (who is a singular ball of positive energy and excitement and absolutely the #1 person you'd want to go to karaoke with), "Is that all there is?" and she said "Kid, we're working on it but thanks for noticing!"

Interesting collection of folks nonetheless (one guy came from Maine, one guy was a "graveyard monitor for a state agency," one guy taught athletics to autistic children, one guy was a lobster chef from Boston who claimed to have an irrational fear of them... nephropidaphobia?) with complex and long lives on display (one guy with a wife of fifty years, one with a husband for forty, one guy who auditioned for the show back in the 1990's in Atlantic City) and a few with minor social maladjustments who were clearly just thrilled to be there... I probably fit into the latter category.

I honestly think I bombed the written test; I hit a block on an answer halfway through and it fucked me up for more or less the next eight questions... it wasn't like I was doing so well up to then either! I guess I did fine on the live portion. But my clear stage voice and conscious camera presence is supported by way too many years of theater training, the jewfro definitely was appreciated (one of the testers commented that I "looked like Alex in the 70's") and my decision to offer to make a Trebek ceramic piece (supported by a stack of pottery that I brought in as samples) was extremely well received. So now I wait for 18 months and see what happens.

It was fun! I recommend doing it if you can!

I did my audition in Philly in September 2014. They just called me this week to be on the show - tapes next month! So even if they say 18 months, don't lose hope.

von kelson, Friday, 14 October 2016 12:33 (nine years ago)

Congrats on making the cut! How did you feel like you did on the test?

Petty concern: even if I were to make the cut I'm a little woobly on the idea of booking a round trip ticket to California from NY and a hotel on my own dime... even with the guaranteed 1k for third place, after taxes it's likely to be a fairly expensive adventure! Doc Casino: what did that run you?

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Friday, 14 October 2016 13:26 (nine years ago)

woah, congrats to von kelson!! and ulysses, it sounds like you made a really good impression, don't despair!

DOCTOR CAISNO, BYCREATIVELABBUS (Doctor Casino), Friday, 14 October 2016 13:40 (nine years ago)

I definitely blew some questions on the test, but at that point I think they're more looking for someone relatable they can put on camera, so I'm sure you did well. I'm not expecting to make a profit on the experience given the costs of getting out there, but I figure you can't put a price on the story.

von kelson, Friday, 14 October 2016 13:48 (nine years ago)

congrats + goodluck

Worth noting that he ended his run on a right answer and a conservative bet in final jeopardy.

terrible wager imo & I def agreed w some of his past conservative wagering when the categories were more specific/obscure. he always felt kinda beatable to me idk, good player tho obv

johnny crunch, Friday, 14 October 2016 13:59 (nine years ago)

thanks for the well wishes!

I figure you can't put a price on the story.

this is more or less my approach but it really makes me feel like going for second place becomes a genuine financial consideration! not so much that I would bet to not win but still.

quick question: Do they give you ample time to weigh out the final jeopardy bet so that you can't accidentally fuck it up by betting ten dollars too little?

also very quasi shady question BUT a simple word to the wise would be interesting: i had a friend of a friend of a contestant insist that they give you the category titles prior to gameplay so you can get your mind around what you're going to be dealing with... he said this happened with enough time to actually study?!? T/F? Smells of bullshit to me.

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Friday, 14 October 2016 14:49 (nine years ago)

You can take as long as you need - cameras are off for the commercial break so there's not like a specifically ticking clock or whatever. I'm sure if you took fifteen minutes or something there might be some gentle nudges. They give you paper and a sharpie so you can check and double-check your math, too.

I really think the written test is mainly there to weed out people who did wildly better on the online test (aka cheated somehow). I definitely missed a fair number of the questions but I really think the live human interaction bits are the heart of the exercise.

DOCTOR CAISNO, BYCREATIVELABBUS (Doctor Casino), Friday, 14 October 2016 15:05 (nine years ago)

here's hoping you're right! Maggie wanted to buy some of my pottery and seemed genuine about it, was trying to get a website out of me she could visit and they got the pieces on camera and made it sound like an Trebek mug would be awesome so that and a big head of hair certainly SEEMS like it would get me trending on twitter.

Strange episode today. Middle guy got screwed out of a runaway win because one of his correct responses was considered wrong, then they adjusted his score before FJ, but they didn't subtract from another contestant who also got that one correct.

also a hidden star trek reference in the category names.

great win for buzzy cohen last night, and two of my faves lilly chin and tim aten are up tonight. who ya got?

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 22:55 (eight years ago)

Semifinal 1: Andrew Pau v. Austin Rogers v. Lilly Chin.

Andrew's gotta be the favorite after his impressive win on Friday. It looks like he's the #1 seed considering he doesn't have another quarterfinal winner in his group -- but this is still a very tough group! Andrew and Austin overlap in their humanities expertise so Lilly should be able to dominate the science categories. Austin clearly wasn't prepared for how fast Alan was on the buzzer in the quarters, leading to some unforced errors, but no Alan there this go-around, so Austin may be able to use his buzzer speed to his advantage.

new champion donna brown met her husband when they were both college radio djs at the univ of georgia. she did the '80s show, he did the noise show. they argued a lot. "noise," she explained to alex, "is a kind of music that's experimental, so there are themes and motifs and everything, um, less structure." but everything's good now: "our marriage has structure." she's very bubbly. i like her a lot.

also, she had the only correct answer on final jeop: "this label, home to u2 and bob marley, was created, fittingly, in jamaica with an investment of 1,000 pounds sterling."

fact checking cuz, Saturday, 23 December 2017 03:37 (eight years ago)

...is this where I should say that Donna is an ILX vet? Because she is. That makes two of us that have been on the show!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 December 2017 03:59 (eight years ago)

that’s awesome!!! she had a very very big first win!

I thought at least three ILXors have been on the show, no? I remember it mentioned in this thread somewhere, once upon a time. Congrats to Donna
