that happens to me too! i just feel repulsed that my personal rhythm is in sync with a repellent song, not embarrassed necessarily.

Lech - I thought of you because there's this giant high-end deli/steamtable/ramen/smoothie/everything place near my office that has this ridiculous selection of yogurt, including flavors of Chobani I've never seen as well as all these small-batch brands that look like they were jarred by goat-herders in the himalayas, and we joked that they carry "limited edition yogurts."

lol -- yogurts is like watersi thought of you recently bc i was hanging out with your friends! i did not feel embarrassed about it though.

Safran-Foer and Natalie Portman re-write the world in sepia-vomited emails and cast themselves as every character in Russian literature and it's full of contempt for children

i met a guy in a pub before who said he worked on a movie with natalie portman, like he was in some minor technical role and she was acting in it. and one day he decided to ask her out, and he did, and she said yes, and they dated for a while. then she kept turning up at his house at odd hours and his fairytale story just became an odd thing he wanted to end.
end of vaguely related anecdote.

It reminds me somehow of the IE moment I recently remembered, when I and a few other musically disinclined friends started a band in my apartment and recorded our practices on a minicassette recorder and were impressed enough by the mostly discordant racket we were making that I somehow talked another friend into letting me play like thirty shitty seconds of white noise through a mic onstage before his much beloved local band played to give the nonplussed audience a preview of what they could look forward to in the near future. We never actually played out anywhere. I was like 22. I sure wish that had passed before it happened.

Was showing my bus pass to the driver this morning, when I heard that my phone has turned on in my pocket and the podcast app has started playing. At this point it was really an indistinct murmur, but I felt compelled to fumble it out of my pocket and try to shut it off. Instead, I managed to turn the volume up to full blast and a nasal voice erupted out of my phone "Well, if they are Muslims, Muslims aren't allowed to drink!"
I manage to shut it off at that point and slink back to a seat to figure out just what sort of conversation I was listening in on.
My embarrassment: irrational or rational?

if I unplug my headphones from my phone, the music I've been listening to automatically switches off. Since the last update it's got into the habit of suddenly starting up again about 3 minutes later. This is especially great when I've been listening to offensive metal and hip hop on my lunch break and have a client meeting in the afternoon

Like maybe two weeks ago at work, the headphone jack on my phone somehow failed to notice that I had plugged headphones in, which led to me accidentally blasting this at full volume in my quiet office:

this reminds me of the time i was on the plane home from CA and i was watching girls season 5 (i haven't seen 3 or 4 but figured it would be entertaining nonetheless) and there was a ~70 year old grandpa* next to me. his wife was across the aisle. there was no small amount of nudity and sexual activity on my screen. he may have been giving me disdainful looks, but i wouldn't know because i wasn't monitoring his reaction. on a whim i decided to look over at what he was doing on his screen. he was listening to the children's radio channel, where a woman who looked a little like reba mcentire was singing "the wheels on the bus". he was staring into space. it's like that scene from troll 2 where they're in the car and they're like "let's sing that song you love so much" and launch into a round of "row row row your boat"
o_O
*I knew he was a grandpa because he was talking with his wife across the aisle about their grandkids
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 9 September 2016 16:20 (nine years ago)
amazing
I wonder if he just had it tuned to something randomly for background noise, or if he found the children's channel very pleasing
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 9 September 2016 17:10 (nine years ago)
Awww maybe he was learning some kid songs so he'd be able to sing them with his grandkids.
